Thread: Brook motor problem. |

Hi all, I am having problems with this motor, it's a 240v 3/4hp 1430 RPM motor removed from a myford. The problem is when switched on it gets up to speed and I get a yellow flash from the region of the centrifugal switch and the circuit breaker trips. I have connected the Live to terminals AZ and T with a link wire between the two. Neutral is connected to terminals Z and A with a link wire between the two terminals, is this right? The motor has been stood around for sometime so I cleaned out any swarf and debris from inside the case and inspected the wiring for chafing and damage none found.I have been assured by my boss that the motor was good when removed. I have disconnected the cable for clarity. Mark P. Edited By Mark P. on 15/08/2014 13:38:43 |

The DC motor brushes on my Warco WM16 wear very quickly and give this problem. Mark P. |

Hi all, I have solved my problem with the batteries going flat at the wrong moment (thanks for your input Les). I made a dummy battery to the same dimensions of a CR2032 battery with 2 brass discs of brass with a wire soldered to each and stuck them together with double sided tape. I connected them to a pair of 1.5v D cells (the big ones) wired in series to give me 3 volts, only 1 dummy battery is required in each readout and bingo all systems go! Next is to build a suitable 3 volt power supply. Mark P. |

Hi Les, thanks for the info. I'm not really sure how I will connect to the unit should I try to make a dummy battery as I don't want to "tinker" too much in the gibblets of the read out. Mark P |

Hi Les, the budget readouts I refer to are the ones sold by Arceuortrade http://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/Catalogue/Measurement/Digital-Readouts-with-Dedicated-Remote-Display These use 2 CR2032 cells in ( I assume) series to give six volts, I would like to run mine from an external power source for greater stability and not running out of juice at a critical moment. Does anyone know if there is a simple way of connecting a wall wart to negate the use of CR2032 batteries as used in budget digital readouts? Mine use 2 CR2032's in each readout, and invariably go flat at inopportune moments. Mark P. |
Thread: How do you solder brass cones/nipples onto copper pipe |
11/07/2014 14:19:19 |
Silver soldering is not a black art as people imagine, here is my fool proof method. 1. Apply flux paste to pipe, 2, Insert pipe into nipple. 3. Heat pipe just above nipple, use slightly carburising flame(soft). 4. Apply solder to job, don't melt solder with flame let the temperature of the job melt it. Use just enough to do the job,(remember silver solder is expensive) I would recommend using the smallest rod you can I find 455 at .7mm ideal for nipples. 5. When solder has solidified dunk in DILUTE sulphuric acid to remove flux, wash in water. Hope this is of use to you. Mark P. |

I have worn varifocals for a few years, the only problem I have is sometimes a flat surface seems to have a slight bow or curve in it, it is the same for vertical things as well. I overcame the problem by asking the wife "is that straight/flat" Regards Mark P |

Thanks for the replies chaps, looks like the project may be a goer! Just had a minor windfall so can get 90% of what's needed to start. Have found an inverter/motor package for just under £200. My idea of retaining the 2 speed gearbox was so I would have a sort of backgear albeit minor I feel that it would be a bit of an advantage. I plan to run the primary drive with a toothed belt to the original input shaft of the gearbox. Regards Mark P. |

Does anyone know if both sets standard gears are plastic, or just one? Regards Mark P. |

Hi Rik, I have seen some similar looking gears on the Arc Euro web site but not sure that they will fit. I don't want to strip the mill only to find that I need to make parts to fit the new motor and drive train. The idea of the inverter drive is I seem to use a lot of brushes (3 sets in 5 years) they seem to be on the way out now. Regards Mark P. |

Hi all, has anyone out there considered fitting an inverter drive to their WM16 mill? If you did or were to fit one would you keep the 2 speed gearbox? I understand that the gears are plastic but have never had a problem with them in 5 years of ownership,I also believe that metal replacement ones are available but where from.Any thoughts welcome. I have had no end of brush problems with my WM250 and WM16, the mill seems to eat brushes 4 sets in 4 years and 2 sets in the lathe. They are only used mainly a weekends. I am seriously thinking of converting them both to VFD drive, has anyone done this their WM16? Regards Mark P. |
