Thread: Dimmer Switch |
11/11/2013 19:17:38 |
I think dimmers are designed for a resistive load, driving a motor from one may not be ideal although a poster says it has been done. The only motor that a dimmer may work on is a universal brushed type motor like a sewing machine or power drill. Not being familiar with the grundfos pumps I would guess the speed changing model may use pole changing to effect 3 speeds ie a 2,4or 6 pole selection it adds complication to the motor wind but the control is just a switch. Mike I see Andrew and Martin proposed the pole switching solution while I was typing. I believe a universal mill should have the facility to swing the table and connect the table drive to a dividing head for such operations as helical gear cutting and the like. Mike |

I also have analogue DTIs and I would agree that they are easier to use for some tasks than digital gauges. I still have an AVO in my drawer but the Fluke has become the tool of choice due to its portability and robustness. The AVO was most unlikely to survive being dropped but the fluke in its rubber case survives most incidents on the shop floor. Mike |

I have two mitutoyo ones and both displays rotate. I would imagine it is a common feature as reading upside down would be prone to error. mike |

I have just checked a manual and the standard bed was 22 1/4 inches, all other dimensions agree with Norman. For the sake of waiting to drill a couple of holes I think I would measure the lathe when you get it. Mike |
Thread: Minnie boiler stays |
08/09/2013 20:03:44 |
Thanks to the Jasons for their replies, I think I will go for the updated design, As the boiler was completed apart from the firebox stays when I took on the job silver soldering inside the firebox will be fiddly but I know a magician with a welding torch who is willing to do the job. Mike |

I have taken on the task of finishing a 1" model of Minnie. The boiler has been assembled and silver soldered apart from the firebox stays. Reading the Len Mason book I get the impression that the stays are soft soldered, but I am sure that I have read that boiler inspectors now look for these to be silver soldered. Can anyone guide me as to current practice, as if I soft solder them, silver soldering will no longer be an option. Mike |

Hi Kevin, I have the same mill with that motor type. I have 2 red wires labeled Z1 and Z2 and 2 black wires labeled U1 and U2. Z2 goes on the top left U2 on top middle U1 bottom left and Z1 bottom middle. Mike |

Thread: Another motor wiring question |
25/06/2013 02:57:49 |
So is Ians motor being overstressed by a 240V full wave rectified supply? I think it is a bit and to add smoothing will make it worse and also watch out for the current pulse to charge any smoothing caps damaging the rectfiers. Mike |
25/06/2013 01:25:47 |
A full wave rectified 240Vrms sine wave will vary from 0V to a peak of 340V if I store energy in a capacitor and maintain a voltage with a bit of ripple that does not drop to 0V I will have a waveform that is no longer a rectified sine wave but a slightly rough DC at a voltage above 240V DC and Below 340V DC Mike |
25/06/2013 00:11:25 |
It is stored in the capacitors and supplied to the load when the supply voltage drops below the charge voltage of the caps. Mike |
24/06/2013 23:28:42 |
The motor is rated at 200/220V DC. 240V rms provides the equivalent heating effect of 240V DC. To apply smoothing will raise that DC voltage. 340V is the peak voltage so depending how much capacitance is used will decide the ripple on the supply, some big caps could push the DC towards 300V Mike |
