Thread: New type postage stamps
06/12/2022 14:35:10

The bar code identifies the stamp and is for a one shot use, once it has been through the system it will be deleted as a valid stamp so the recipient will be charged if a stamp is used twice. Do not remove the barcode or the stamp will not be valid.

Thread: How long should I keep my recently vapour blasted steel engine components before getting a primer coat down
06/12/2022 12:35:41

If any signs of rusting appear I would be inclined to use a rust treatment to neutralise it before painting. I have used rust treatment rather than keep discing until rust pitting is removed and most of the steel. Obviously you won’t have severe rust to deal with but neutralising any rust bloom could be useful.

I have noticed that panels left with only a primer coat on cars do start rusting after some weather exposure so being porous would tally with that observation

Thread: Slow Speed Grinder?
05/12/2022 21:54:44

I think a slow speed grinder might give you a fighting chance of not drawing the temper of carbon steel wood chisels and plane irons. As a casual woodworker I have never mastered putting the keenest edge on a blade of any sort. A chance stroll through a Claas Ohlsen shop made me buy a baby T3 Tormek at a very keen price as the T4 was just coming in. If you follow the instructions you will have very sharp tools, for the first time my tools were as sharp as I could wish for and my plane blade was sharp as it was after I asked the workshop technician at school to sharpen it when I was a schoolboy. He used a water cooled sandstone wheel to tidy up the mess I brought him and a few strokes on the oil stones made a super sharp blade, his test was to shave the back of his wrist. My Tormek efforts produced an edge sharp enough to shave my wrist and pare crap softwood without crushed fibres.

A sudden change of weather from cold to warm and wet will see condensation wreak havoc on bare steel. Handling with bare hands soon puts rusty fingerprints on blasted clean steel. A coat of primer will offer some protection but even primed jobs seem to succumb eventually. If you don’t mind having to thoroughly degrease the jobs then a protective oil coating could be used until a full paint system can be applied.

Thread: A whole lot of not a lot...

Posted by Henry Brown on 01/12/2022 11:06:21:

I had to take the drivers seat out of my toy car while it was having some bodywork done, I put it in the workshop out of the way and found it to be a great place to escape the rest of the world! The only drawback was that it was a bit low to the ground, it's back in the car now so I have to stand and cogitate...

At work I purchased a brand new scrap Austin Princess drivers seat for £2, a box tubing frame to mount it at a comfortable height completed my workshop chair. It was probably too comfortable as you could easily nod off on the night shift. It was very adjustable with seat squab and back adjustment.

Thread: Myford S7 with stepper on cross-slide
01/12/2022 12:10:29

A ball screw will require to be connected to something to restrict free rotation. If a stepper is intended to be always connected then that should be ok but if a manual only handwheel operation is provided then the cutting loads could move the slide.

Thread: Is this a scam?
30/11/2022 09:59:07

Does the government actually have your email address? I would be very wary, I received notification in the post from the DWP about the winter fuel payment and it does not ask for any further details. I assume it will be paid into the account used for my state pension. If it is the payment for the subsidy to fuel bills then direct debit customers will receive the payment in a series of six monthly payments to their electricity supplier. I have received two payments so far. There seems to be a process to claim the subsidy if you do not use direct debit or a prepayment meter. I would be very cautious and look out for email addresses that are almost correct but have an extra character included that is easy to miss.

Thread: How to release MT1 taper
29/11/2022 21:52:38

My preference is for a brass bar or at least a brass tip on the end to avoid any harm to the tool being ejected. Probably not absolutely necessary but it can’t do any harm.

Thread: Has anyone found a good notebook for hobby engineers?
28/11/2022 10:49:53

The book factory seem able to supply a wide variety of notebooks at a price. The 1mm graph page does not appear to be a standard offering. Do you need the features of a hardback book for security and protection or would a loose leaf file filled with the paper you require be ok. During lockdown I printed some pages for accounting use for my wife as she was at home and her normal paper was unavailable. A pad I like for my doodlings is the 5mm squared quadrille but I fully understand your desire to source your preferred format notebook, after 40 years it must be the one that you find ideal but it is looking rather elusive.

Thread: Dormer 108 Drill Grinder
24/11/2022 00:18:10

Hi James, pleased the manual has cleared up the chisel point question. It looks like the Mkl and Mkll are very much the same machine so much of the manual will be relevant. It looks a nice tidy rebuild. You are probably aware that Midland Abrasives hold the remaining spare parts for the Dormer grinders, they are not cheap and could mostly be made or refurbished in a home workshop. The fingers for holding the drills would not be too difficult to make if the dimensions are available but I think I may stump up for the ones I don’t have and measure up before putting them to use.

Hi James, I have emailed the manual, I notice that it is for the Mk II machine which is what I have. I think the difference is mainly cosmetic between the two, if you have a Mkll then it’s happy days.

if anyone else needs a pdf manual for the Dormer 108 drill grinding machine then private message your email and I can send a copy.

The manual I have mentions setting the chisel angle. Happy to email a pdf copy to you if you private message me an email address to send it to. The manual I have has 22 pages.

If I'd known that when I was at Bovington, I'd have paid my respects. T.E. Lawrence, no relation to LBSC, had a fascinating career and a complex personality.

The 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom' is a highly readable classic. It's not the original because Lawrence accidentally left the first draft on a seat in Reading railway station, and it was never seen again. It it ever turns up the finder will make a fortune!

Dave

Should you find yourself at Bovington again Lawrence’s retreat Clouds Hill is less than half a mile further up the road from the memorial stone and is now a National trust property open to the public.

Thread: Off to Bovington!
21/11/2022 12:54:15

Just up the road from Bovington is the Lawrence of Arabia memorial that marks the spot of his motorcycle crash from which he died. He was an old boy of my fathers school the City of Oxford High School for Boys and my school which was formed by the amalgamation of COHS and Southfield School. Lawrence was a complex character but may have played a useful part in the First World War. Obviously as an old boy of my school and a fellow motorcyclist it interested me. I thought I would mention it as you will be very close to the memorial and easy to visit if you were interested. It’s only really an inscribed stone marking the spot so not an awful lot to actually see.

Thread: How do I identify chuck to find jaws to fit ?

This info sheet from Thame engineering may be useful, unfortunately I don’t think they supply all the jaws in the document but it may be helpful in identifying what you have.

Thread: VMC Mill spindle runout
15/11/2022 19:44:29

It may be worth a call to Warco to enquire the availability and price of a new spindle. Our maintenance shop had some magicians at straightening shafts that had been bent, it may be worth a try if you have access to a press but probably not a job to learn on.

Thread: Words and phrases
15/11/2022 16:40:43

My step grandmother had a meatsafe but as my grandfather had bought a fridge it was not in use that I ever remember. She would not entertain an electric iron though and went to her grave only having used her flat irons and gas ring.
