Thread: Soba Vice Problem
27/07/2014 15:34:07

I purchased one of these vices at least 5 years ago, it had exactly the same problem, still has as I see no reason to correct it. The holes in mine are drilled 10.75 and I use M8 tee nuts and studs for clamping it down and this works perfectly well for me.I use it most of the time without the swivel base to gain more Z axis space. I would like to say that apart from these two holes being on the p**s it is a very well made vice, castings are good ,machining all over is to a good standard and it does what it was purchased for. I imagine that every one of these 3 inch vices has the same problem - anybody else got one?

Thread: Hammerite has changed
16/07/2014 19:20:17

I have been trying to buy Hammerite Thinners recently, tried Halfords locally and in another town 40 miles away, out of stock, nobody knew when any was coming in, same with B&Q and Homebase. Eventually found two tins in a backstreet Ironmongers shop. Yes Hammerite has changed, I have just painted the side gate with the new smooth Black, except its not black but a greyish black without any thickness to it. Any suggestions to what we all use instead?

Thread: Different types of copper boiler tube
08/03/2014 17:38:44

S.D.L. Receipts are pointless, all they prove is that on a particular day you purchased something. Julian Atkins boiler inspector should ask for Certificates of Conformity if he is concerned about the type etc of the material. By wanting a receipt all he is proving is that it was paid for and not nickedcheeky

07/03/2014 08:56:11

Julian, if your club is affiliated to Northern / Southern Federation it should only test boilers to the exact wording of those regulations. If the book says copper is to be a certain specification and receipts are needed, you need to provide them, I can assure you that there is no mention of grade of copper or silver solder in the Green book, it is just a case of your boiler tester being a prize "jobsworth". I feel that anyone imposing extra regulations should be reported to the Federation.

Fizzy, I agree with you absolutely.

Thread: Which material for main frames?
02/03/2014 12:21:51

The last loco I built I used BMS for the frames, never again! Gauge plate is expensive but it arrives flat and stays flat, and straight. Compared to cost of castings and copper for boiler, and the end value of the project I think it is worth every penny

Thread: Thread size on disposable butane containers
01/03/2014 17:17:12

Neil, thanks for the link. From the info I got from that site and by sacrificing a friends adaptor I can state with a fair degree of confidence that the thread is 7/16 x 28 tpi UNEF

28/02/2014 20:04:29

I wish to make an adaptor to fit onto the disposable Butane or Butane / Propane mix Gas cannisters that are sold in the high street DIY shops. Could somebody please tell me what thread is used on these items, it seems to be about 7/16 diameter but I cannot measure the pitch.

Rik, it sounds as though it was an Optical Profile Grinder you were working, I worked one many years ago while employed by a Diamond Tool manufacturer. Our particular machine was made by a company called Wasino. If I remember correctly the projector overlay was drawn out 50 times full size and the wheel was constantly going in and out of focus as it traveled up and down. Not a machine that I looked forward to working!

David,
I am building a 5" Gemma, and am having trouble with valve gear. You mention a proper valve gear fitted to this engine, could you please provide me with details.
Thread: Building lathe/mill in cast of concrete?
09/04/2011 21:57:02
If my memory serves me correctly, the Hardinge CNC lathe using concrete was the Talent range. These were slant bed machines as opposed to their CHNC range which were similar to the HLVH series.

Hi Mark,
EN8 is a pretty tough bit of steel, but it can be quite easily  machined on Myford sized lathes
Thread: Late delivery of magazines due to adverse weather
13/01/2011 09:26:59
Hi,
I am also waiting for ME 4394 to arrive in North Hampshire. Suppose heavy rain will be blamed for its late, or non arrival. Funny how none of the bills and junk mail get affected though
Thread: Aluminium smokeboxes
03/01/2011 15:07:57
Gentlemen,
The loco I am currently building has an aluminium casting for the smokebox. Over the Christmas holidays I have machined the smokebox and bored it out to a snug fit to the copper boiler. When telling a couple of club members about my progress I was told that I would need a special sealant for ally to copper, something to do with electrolytic action, they could not tell me what the stuff is but think that it is used on Winson locos as some of these have ally smokeboxes and also on the Pollys. Are there any builders out there who have these locos and have been told the same as me, or what did you seal the smokebox to boiler with?

Still waiting for ME 4393 and MEW 172. EIM arrived today, about 6 days later than usual.
Thread: Superheaters
23/12/2010 09:38:40
I wonder if some of the Loco builders could advise me on what alloys to use when making superheaters. I am about to attempt my first set of superheater elements, made from copper and I am unsure what brazing alloy to use on the return bends. The bends are contained within the tube as opposed to protruding through into the firebox as a radiant type. I have available the standard easyflo no2 also C4 and B6 alloys, I dont know what the modern classification for them is, Can the smokebox end joints be done in easyflo? Thanks for reading this.

Thread: Myford Squareness.
05/12/2010 15:26:20
Am I missing something Chris, why would you want to alter it and what occasion could possibly demand it. Myford go to a lot of bother to ensure the lathe faces concave for good reason, we are perhaps talking about one thou hollow across the diameter of the large faceplate, in fact most ( decent ) manufacturers set their lathes this way, my trusty Holbrook dating from 1946 faces a gnats concave. It is not a case of living with it, it is how it should be - be grateful.
Thread: Southworth 6in Vertical Feed Pump. ME Series.
18/11/2010 19:53:56
What has happened to this series of articles? Looking back through some recent magazines it seems that in number 4387 we were promised an article  would appear in the next issue, it did not, and nothing has appeared since. Would someone like to say why?
Thread: Model Engineer Exhibition tickets
29/10/2010 09:35:45
decided to buy a ticket in advance for this years exhibition, thought I would do it online, big mistake. First I have to remember a password, I cannot so a new one is sent to me, then I purchase the ticket but after putting in card details I am directed to a site for even more security, another password, key in the first, fifth and eighth letter of the password, so I quickly write down password, count 1, 5, and 8th letter, key it in and click on send only to be told YOU WERE TOO SLOW.
Now what happens, nothing, no advice to try again nothing to say if my transaction worked or not, have I purchased a ticket or not, perhaps the editor can tell me, perhaps he can give us old f**ts a few more seconds to write down passwords and count letters, anyone else had problems, or is it only me?
Thread: Machinable Ceramics
04/10/2010 16:35:48
I machine quite a lot of ceramic in my day job, you will need decent carbide tips, use plenty of coolant and you should be OK
Thread: Locomotive Suspension
18/09/2010 17:34:03
Gentlemen,
I am building a Sweet Pea 5" gauge 0-4-0. I have got as far as a full set of frames and now need to fit wheels, axleboxes, springs etc. I wonder if anyone who has built one of these locos could possibly tell me, firstly, if they used the Blackgates springs, and secondly how much they shortened them by.( I have tried asking this question on the Sweet Pea Forum but got no replies)
