Thread: All things Beaver Mill

I have a VBRP Mk 2 which is missing the taper dowels for head location and I wonder if anyone could give me the taper dimensions so that I can make 2. The drawing in the manual shows it to be a much steeper taper than normal for a taper pin. ? Anybody got a spare one? or a drawing which gives dimensions?

Thanks, Mike

Thread: Optical encoder for threading

Thanks John,

That would be a great help and from what you say I guessI could use the plain back of the existing disk and just cut a slot. ?how wide a slot?

Thanks, Mike

I am getting a Denford Orac lathe back in working order and I am not sure if the encoder originally fitted to the spindle is satisfactory for use with either Mach3 or Mach4. If the technology is too old then what should I consider as a replacement, preferable still on the spindle rather than belt driven from the spindle.

Thanks, Mike

Hi Colin,

I have some scrapers listed on ebay at the moment. See 301001204131 and PM me if they would suit you. They are all useful scrapers and one could be right for your Bearing/Spindle fitting.

Thread: Colchester Student Lathe
19/10/2013 10:17:50

Hi Frank,

Following on from Bob's advice, I would suggest that while the chuck is off you put a substantial and long piece of bar down the spindle. Put a clock on the spindle nose and pushing and pulling the bar, observe your clock. Deflection either up and down or side to side will indicate a headstock problem, no deflection would suggest that your chuck may be the cause.

Hope this helps, Mike

Thread: Time for a new lathe
29/08/2013 09:26:08

I Have a Colchester Bantam in my shed, on a wooden floor. I cut a peice of thick worktop just a couple of inches bigger that the lathe and put that under it. Been thre for 10 years with no problems and I feel no movement of the floor when I am using the lathe. I dont think you will have a problem if you get something of a similar size and put a piece of worktop under it to spread the load.

Thread: Fitting a Stepper motor to 6" Rotary table
24/07/2013 21:16:05

Thank you, both Ian and John for your helpfull replies. As I have a suitable size 27 stepper motor in my "come in handy" box, I will go with that and hopefully keep the group posted along the way.

I am looking for suggestions about the size and power of stepper to drive this table. It is a standard table with a 90 turn worm giving 4 degrees for 1 rev of the spindle. I don't expect that I will be taking large cuts or that it will be revolving heavy lumps and speed is not an issue, but I am sure that a lot of people have done this before, so I would be grateful for any input.

Thread: Tom Senior Bull Wheel Pin
08/05/2013 16:20:56

Hello,

Thank you Les and Michael and Brian.

The information you have directed me to should be sufficient to enable me to make the parts and get going. Your comments have helped as well as the photo's and sketch of the spring.

Once again the sum of knowledge comes to the rescue.

Many Thanks,

Mike

I have just bought a TS mill which is missing the locking pin and all other parts to lock the pulley and bull wheel.

I would be gratefull for either a photo or drawing of the pin and the means to keep it engaged or dis-engaged. There appears to be a threaded hole about 1" from the pin hole, which I think must be for some form of locking plate.

Thank you for helping me.

Thread: Issue Number 1
07/02/2013 21:27:11

Hi, Just browsing ebay tonight, I noticed that Issue 1 (Summer 1990) of Model Engineer's Workshop is on ebay with a starting price of 99p.

I don't suppose it will stay at 99p for long but it is a good chance to get what I think is a rare issue.

Thread: Marking metals
15/05/2012 10:45:57

Thanks for the quick replies, Richard confirms what I rememberand and Paul and Dias have pointed my towards further information. Unfortunately I do not have a subscription to ME so can't access the back issues. Does anyone have the relavent issues -3952 and 2407- that I could borrow to look at. Of course I will cover postage costs both ways.

I am trying to find a supplier, or plans to make, an etching pen.

When I worked we had a device which ran from a transformer. In use it sparked a mark on metal. It was pen shaped and probably had something like a bell vibrator inside which made or broke the supply to the tip. the tip was originally a gramaphone needle, when that died I used a bit of tig electrode which lasted for years. I suppose it could be described as a hand held spark eroder and was jolly easy to use. I have a Burgess vibrating tool which is not as easy to use.

I hope someone with a better memory can help

Thread: Tufnol

Hi Niloch,  Machining tufnol of any grade requires sharp tools with about the same rake as you would use on aluminium.

The previous comments about wearing a mask are very important  and futhermore DO NOT Leave the swarf/dust in a heap or in a tin. It will auto-ignite. How do I know? I machined a lot of carb spacers on a profile mill. swept up and cleaned the machine at the end of the day, put the dust in a drum, as you do, and happened to go back 3 hours later to find the dust well alight.
