Thread: Slot milling speeds
22/02/2012 09:10:50

1600 rpm sounds high to me. I would go for about half that. What depth of cut are you taking? On my Hobbymat full depth would be too much. I would probaly take three passes with a 2mm or less cut.

Dear Chris,
I'm interested in your Polly project, having made two in consecutive years on the SMEE training courses. I enjoyed the first so much I went back for another go - despite it being a bit of a drag from Norfolk. If you are in reach of London it's really worth considering going on one. The next one starts on 19th May - see http://www.sm-ee.co.uk/. You'll get lead gently through the construction, with expert help at all stages, and learn a lot all round the subject of model engineering.
(Hope this is not considered to be a commercial post!)
Bill.
Thanks for the plug Bill. We are now taking bookings for the 2012 courses.

Thread: Choice of small milling machine

Two points. The manual MichaelG points us at suggests that the motor has brushes (see fault finding) but Axminster quote brushless. I suspect Axminster are right but it would be worth checking. The lowest speed quoted is 200 rpm which sounds a bit high to me. A slitting saw used on steel might need a slower speed - I would rather see 50 rpm.

MichaelG finds metric cap heads too big. I find that stainless screws have heads that are smaller and neater. They may not be up to his exacting standards but they might be worth looking at.

Hi Tony,

Welcome.

If it was a very small engine it may have been a version of Tubal Cain's design from his book 'Simple Model Steam Engines' called 'Jenny Wren', a small vertical boilered engine. The SMEE use one of his designs on their training days. If I remember correctly it is the design called 'Polly'.

I may be wrong of course - I often am- but a member of that organisation may be able to enlighten us. A useful site for free small steam engine plans is here at John-Tom.com.

Best regards

Terry
Tubal Cain's Polly is indeed the basis for one of the SMEE courses. It is relatively simple, made from stock materials (no castings) and makes a good introduction to many of the skills and techniques required by an aspiring model engineer. We do depart from the book in a number of places to emphasise current practice. For instance the boiler is made from seamless copper tube rather than rolled from copper or brass sheet as described by Tubal Cain.

Jenny Wren is much smaller and quite a challenge to get to work.

Thread: Drilling in the mill
24/10/2011 17:00:52
It works fine - I don't have room for a pillar drill either. The only downside is that I have to swap the collet chuck and drill chuck over quite frequently. Do make sure you get a "mill drill", pure milling machines have no quill and so are unsuitable for drilling.

Could it be a tool to adjust the cutter in a between centres boring bar?

Thanks for that Les. I will try to remember that next time.

If you can get to London you might consider going on a SMEE course. There are two and the first (Basic Training 1) is aimed at people like yourself who wish to set up a workshop. The next course starts on 18th Feb 2012.

Thread: What is the purpose of centre drill and how does it work?
14/08/2011 14:44:03
If you look at the point of a twist drill you will see that it has a chisel edge at the centre. On a 12mm drill this is likely to be about 3mm long. Smaller drills will have a proportionately shorter chisel edge. The advice I was given is to make your starter hole bigger than the chisel end. This allows the true cutting edges of the drill to bite and so start your hole in the correct place.
Thread: Books for model engineers

I have also recently been given Geoge Daniels book. I will never make a watch but the book is immensly practical and I am sure some of his techniques will come in handy one day. At under £30 from Amazon with free P&P it is fantastic value.
Another book I have aquired recently is "Wheel and Pinion Cutting in Horology" by J Malcom Wild. This is also a very practical book using methods and equipment within the capabilities of many model engineers. Although he is talking about cycloidal gears much of the book would also be relavent to involute. Like the Daniels book it is well written with lots of good illustrations.
Thread: The perfect ME Lathe
18/07/2011 15:01:54
Keith we can all dream!
On your more serious point I agree, it is unlikely anyone would want to enter the quality end of the ME market. In any case there are a number of offerings already there. I have never used any of these but from the adverts Wabeco, Emco and Ceriani all seem to offer a better product than the standard chinese offerings. Obviously the price is higher.

Why not take the opportunity to actually advance the technology:
Use a brushless DC motor with variable speed control like Arc Euro's recent offerings.
Scrap the change gears and fit a stepper motor to the leadscrew giving any pitch or feed rate you care to dial in.
Fit DROs to the saddle and cross slide as part of the design rather than as a bolt on extra.

Yes - long may they survive. They not only make the small lathes but an excellent small milling machine.
Thread: MiniMill Table Accuracy
19/04/2011 15:29:16
I wonder if the table is tilting. Replacing the gib strip sounds a good idea. While you are at it look at the dovetail on the other side. It has been known for the "point" to be too sharp and not allow the proper surfaces to mate.
Thread: Boxford cross slide dial grub screws
22/03/2011 12:27:43
You might try replacing the springs with short rods of PTFE. Make them a loose fit in the threaded holes.
I did this on a Warco lathe to make the dials resetable.
Thread: Engineering courses for newbies
15/03/2011 10:01:24
You might like to consider the SMEE courses. They are held in South London. Loughborough Junction is the nearest Station but there are buses from Brixton, Hearne Hill etc. There is also onstreet parking.
The Part I course is over three Saturday sessions and covers setting up a workshop and an introduction to using hand and machine tools.
Part II takes you through making Tubal Cain's Polly, a vertical boiler steam plant. In the process we cover many of the techniques required on bigger projects. This course is six sessions and we demonstrate and talk about each stage and then you complete the component at home over the next month as "homework".
Unfortunately the next course will not be until February 2012 as we have recently modified the schedule so that the courses start after the main London model engineering shows where we recruit many of our students.
More details on the SMEE Website.
