Lathe and milling for beginners in north Kent

2 forum posts | I'd like to learn more about lathe and milling but have found it almost impossible to find a course in northwest Kent or south east London. They are either full time courses for youngsters embarking on an engineering career or are located somewhere up t'north.
Does anyone run a weekend or evening class where I can re-learn all that did at CSE/"O" level metalwork plus more. My old metalwork teacher at school was brilliant and the memories have rekindled my enthusiasm.
I eventually want to buy a Boxford or Myford but need to pick up the fundamentals first.
Thanks. |

![]() 111 forum posts 3 photos | My searches some months ago for Beginners courses only produced Axminster - who do a 2 day beginners course for the lathe, a 2 day one for the mill, and a 5 day Intermediate course for the lathe. http://www.axminsterskillcentre.co.uk/courses_engineering.html
I have been lucky enough to be invited to join an informal Friday eveing class/club in Cambridge, where I am learning the basics. |

148 forum posts 6 photos | You might like to consider the SMEE courses. They are held in South London. Loughborough Junction is the nearest Station but there are buses from Brixton, Hearne Hill etc. There is also onstreet parking.
The Part I course is over three Saturday sessions and covers setting up a workshop and an introduction to using hand and machine tools.
Part II takes you through making Tubal Cain's Polly, a vertical boiler steam plant. In the process we cover many of the techniques required on bigger projects. This course is six sessions and we demonstrate and talk about each stage and then you complete the component at home over the next month as "homework".
Unfortunately the next course will not be until February 2012 as we have recently modified the schedule so that the courses start after the main London model engineering shows where we recruit many of our students.
More details on the SMEE Website.

2 forum posts | Thanks for the replies. however this is exactly the point about there being nothing available. The Axminster course looks almost the job but its 250 miles away. SMEE is all theory which is all right in part but not what I'm looking for; and its in 2012 anyway :-< |
