Thread: plastic containers
18/11/2010 18:24:48
Gentlemen
I have in the corner of my workshop a piece of plastic window ledge with holes and cutouts for all of my taper tools that are always required in a hurry, just go to your local double glazing factory and ask for an offcut, If they say no go somewhere else, I find if you want something for free and you ask in a polite and friendly manner you will usually get it, try your local ice cream or sweet shop for plastic containers, If you dont ask you dont get.

Re my last regarding adverts in the middle of the text, since your reply the width of the page has gone back to normal and the adverts are once again at the side of the page, as this is only on the first page of this post and not on any other forum posts how can it be my browser?

It would be nice if one could read from the introductory post what this is all about, instead we have a series of adverts obscuring the text, why cant you put the adverts somewhere else  so that people can read them if they want to instead of having them plastered all over the pages.

Thread: Tesa "Digit Cal" caliper ( type 05.30032 ) lithium battery replacement
04/09/2010 13:31:11

Mr Dinosaur Sir,
I understand from your message that you have contacted Tesa and it appeared they were of no use, Exactly what answer did you get? I would have thought that a major manufacturer of precision measuring equipment would have a technical department capable of dealing with your problem. I previously owned a cheapie but the batteries lasted about six months, I eventually purchased a Mititoyu caliper and mike from J&L at a special offer price for both and have had no problems since.

Thread: Railway related beers

Gentlemen
Trains and Beer, try this,
West Somerset Railway and Somerset CAMRA Present the11th Real Ale Festival at Minehead Railway Station on Saturday 11/09/10 and Sunday 12/09/10.
Steam and Diesel trains from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and back with Railway Related Beers on the train, Cotleigh Old Steamer and GWR175 both brewed especially for the WSR. I have no connection with either organisation but having done it previously I can highly recommend this event.

ps swmbo cannot use a lathe or cast a rod but she does drink real ale, one must be thankful for small mercies.

Managed to post a photo in Create an Avatar, didn't know what an avatar was, now need to move said avatar to my photos, any suggestions, would rather saw stainless steel than come to grips with modern technology, why doesn't it tell you what to do instead of assuming every body is computer literate.

In answer to your question re rust, no rust but I was unable to read the sizes on the taps that were etched. All loose taps now kept in small heavy duty plastic bags in a plastic container in a cupboard. Went down to my workshop in the cold snap and switched on my 9 fin oil filled radiator, within 10 minutes there was a small pinging noise and about a pint of oil spread all over the floor, luckily it was only one fin that ruptured, heater now consigned to bin, purchased a new one and will remember not to be too hasty next time.

Ramon,
You should not be the one to apologise, If as you say you didn't get an answer to your question then what is the point of a posting criticising your computer skills, the point of this site is to help people with their engineering problems.

Gentlemen
Down here in sunny or snowy devon a large store called trago stock a product called Hycote Maintainence Spray, sticks like the proverbial and is capable of keeping rust at bay, best of all its half the price of WD and DWF, do not leave tools soaking in duck oil as it can stain, I left a lot of hss taps soaking in it and they came out black.

Give the man a chance, he may not be computer literate, some people have to learn as you or I did be it engineering or typing.

Gentlemen, I used a catalytic heater in my workshop once, never again, the moisture in the air combined with the change in air temperature caused me no end of problems with rust, I eventually ended up with an oil filled electric heater running continuosly at about 50F, I also have some homemade electric blinds on the windows to keep out the sun ( and to stop potential thieves from seeing inside ) the idea is to keep a constant temperature in the workshop, If its still too cold for you put on an extra sweater and wear a workshop coat.

Me again
If you think you were adventurous try doing some of the projects in The Boy Mechanic or The Boy Eletrician, i,e, build a 30KV coil and go and buy an X Ray tube to look at the bones in your hand, purchase sulphuric acid and mercury to make electrical items, build a 90ft long roller coaster, build a glider to fly in,and it goes on and on, these books were published about 1913 and were quite advanced for the time.

Metal mouth Here
If I had come home from work and put my hob nailed boots on the coffee table I would have neede my safety helmet because mother would have given me such a wallop you would not believe,  Safety starts in the home as do manners and courtesy, When I was at school in the 50s and 60s these things were drilled into us by repetition, It does work, can you remember your times table? In a shop recently I had the vat worked out before the lad serving me had totalled every thing and his comment was " I cant do it without a calculator"  kidz ay.

Gentlemen
Me again, having nearly gotten over the trauma of having flammable metal in my mouth I have just been informed by my dentist that I need a Chrome-Cobalt  upper denture because I have a very heavy bite (and according to his prices a very heavy wallet or a light one depending how you look at it), Once again I need your advice, obviously two disimilar metals and an acid (vinegar from the bacon sandwich) make a battery, this combined with the titanium implants doesn't bode well for my wellbeing. Seriously, when we were lads we saved up our pennies to buy fireworks and how many penny bangers did you get for a pound?  240  Two pounds worth amounted to a lot of gunpowder, used in home made fireworks, cannons, mortars etc but the point is we were aware of the dangers and acted accordingly but you are right about the modern generation, they have neither the education or the inclination regarding the dangers around them, their stock answer to everything is  "whatever"  Its dangerous and will kill you does not appear in their lifestyle, unfortunately I dont know the answer, does anybody?

Gentlemen

Having read all of the details regarding the dangers of titanium, It occured to me that I may have inadvertently put myself in a dangerous situation! In the last year I had two titanium inserts fitted in my lower jaw to support my lower denture, this was never a problem until I read this column on safety, I know need to know from the erudite gentlemen who contribute to this site the answer to a life threatening question?
At what speed can I eat a bacon sandwitch before my jawbone catches fire?
