Thread: Comments on the Exhibition |

Micromodels, oh how that takes me back!
Hope the following comments are not just my memory playing tricks (an age thing):
They were in something like a stiff envelope and the cover illustrations were amazing, tempting us to expect great things.
My thoughts are of tiny fiddly cut out parts, and trying to stick them together with the glues available at the time was an art in itself, but if everything worked out they were really rather impressive little objects.
I was proud of the few sucessful ones I made, but they got lost in a house move decades ago, expect they got chucked out with the cardboard and old newspapers.
I do remember seeing a box of these kits for sale on a Sandown dealers stand a few years ago, but it might have been at the much missed Symposium rather than the ME exhibition.
P.S. we did enjoy the recent Sandown ME exhibition, nice range of models upstairs, good for inspiration, and jealousy!
As to the comments on here about cardboard or plastics: remember we all started somewhere, in my case it was things like Micro models, Meccano and Keil Craft rubber powered aeroplane kits.
Do not be quick to dismiss peoples interests, which might progress in time to become large scale Traction Engines or such like.

I've often wondered if Concord might still be flying, and a worldwide sucess had it been built and marketed by somebody like Boeing. |

This is how Pam Ewing must have felt when she woke from the worlds longest nightmare, to find Bobby safe and well and taking a shower
She should have been in there with him, saved a lot of bother.

Kwil.
It's not just countries that have this problem, it usually happens to me after a visit to one of the ME exhibitions.

Not sure if this is still relevant, found the following possible suppliers while looking for something else.
Never actually used them.

Thread: Restoring a steam engine |
10/11/2010 21:50:05 |
Some years ago I helped a friend in restoring older cars, stuff that looked this bad often needed more than penetrating fluids, heat (awful fumes), nut splitters, etc, usually came into play.
Lots of it was along the line of Peters comments.
Good luck with an interesting project, look forward to seeing photos when it's finished.

My Grandfather had an excellent saying which was:-
"You don't get owt for nowt".
This is something which seems to hold true in life generally. |

Don't know anything about Oz, but in the UK we have craft fairs where small workshop type glassblowers exhibit, I wonder if that is a feasible route for getting a glasss dome made. Edited By V8Eng on 01/11/2010 20:03:54 |
Thread: Metric vs Imperial - Practical or Traditional? |
28/10/2010 18:26:05 |
Oops!
Sorry folks, yes it should have been Kilometres.
Same as they use on the UK roadwork information website.
As somebody who went metric decades ago I would be quite happy with a single system, what we have at present is just a silly mix. |
27/10/2010 22:16:09 |
I notice that UK based TV programmes seem to be trying to metricate us by giving distances in Kilometers. |
Thread: Dial Gauge |
27/10/2010 21:58:27 |
Hi.
If you look at tool suppliers websites you will find magnetic bases with swivel adjusters to support your dial gauge, the choice available is very wide.
Or if you live within range, go to one of the upcoming exhibitons to see what's available, and get good advice about all this into the bargain.

Thread: Are steam engines better now in preservation than they were in ordinary service |
20/10/2010 20:51:29 |
Just after leaving school I worked for British Rail (WR), some steam locos were still in service as well as diesels.
The Castles etc certainly hauled passenger stock along very rapidly, trailing steam and smoke they were a delight to watch . Edited By V8Eng on 20/10/2010 20:54:47 |

Have you looked in Halfords?
Our big local store seems to stock specialist oils, but in the tools area rather than main (engine) oils section.

Model helicopters seem to have universal joints connected to various parts of the rotor.
If you have a local model flying club it might be worth chatting to them.
Do not know where you live, but a helicopter modelling former coleague reckoned Slough models www.sloughrc.com were his suppliers.
Or possibly look up Ripmax.
Regards.

Thread: Metal compatability problems? |

If you have the brochure does that mean the manufacturers are still about? If so it might be cheaper and faster to get the parts from them.
I was working out how to repair our 40+ year old garage doors, an internet search found the makers, and they supplied parts very reasonably.
At least that way I could get on with my hobbies.
