Thread: How much ???
13/10/2011 09:44:51
I should think that that would be a very difficult thing to do - given the wide price fluctuations we see these days. Not only that but many of us 'archive' these projects and may not start until several years after publication, rendering any estimate invalid.
Thread: machining conn./coupling rod ends.

Filing buttons will do the job, but this is a gizmo I made for use in the mill, you may be able to adapt it for lathe/vertical slide use.

Thread: Annealing Silver Solder Wire

Same here, no annealing, just a little trial and error with the mandrel size!

Thread: whats this tool called?
06/10/2011 11:02:56
The closest I have seen to that is Elastrator pliers - used for putting rubber rings on young ram=lamb's dangly bits. They have 4 'jaws' tho'
Thread: Darjeeling Hole sizes (to Tap or not to Tap)
29/09/2011 02:57:48
It's all relative - sometimes even 10 BA can be huge!

Yes, that's how I would read it.
Thread: Travelling Steady Fixture for Thinning Narrow Diameter Bar

.... and I look in here fairly regularly.
Thread: Accurately marking centre line
25/09/2011 22:25:41
Now that's something I have been intending to do - a version of John's digital gizmo with a cross piece on the standing jaw to help keep the whole thing square to the workpiece - a thing that kept me from ever having much luck with odd leg calipers.

The idea of that thing I made has been around for a very long time - I made mine up as part of a set of marking stuff

Nope, mine is not hardened, but I suppose it could be of advantage to do so. I only made the one bush, which takes a scribing point ground from a concrete nail, which tend to be very consistent size and finish wise - grind the points on the HH grinding attachment with a suitable collet in the end mill fixture adjusted to run with a little resistance - gets the point nicely in the center (which is the point, ain't it?) I'm pretty happy with the way it will automatically pick up the centre of the stock - not always the case with some of the other methods!

Adding pics to posts on this site is like trying to run through waist deep treacle!

Or you can make up a variant of this gizmo of mine - carefully done they are very accurate and accommodate a range of sizes.

Thread: Please Sir; can you tell me what this is?

A mounting kit for a DTI?

Also, introduce an air stone, coupled to a cheap aquarium pump, into the etching bath - takes care of agitation.
Thread: Machining Castings
18/07/2009 20:52:03
Despite their reputation, Stuart castings can be pretty variable. My 10V castings (1980) were beautiful to work while the Stuart Beam (1990) were, to be frank, 'orrible. The cylinder casting, for example, was good one and and like trying to cut diamonds on t'other.
Thread: Diamomd tool holder
18/07/2009 09:49:58
The couple of commercial ones I have seen in action work quite well, even if they are a bit silvery. My home made version works just fine and was considerably less spendy.

There are quite a few schemes for making them getting about - a quick web search should give you plenty of ideas.
