I don't think there is any real risk of the supply of BA fasteners drying up any time in the immediate future, there is enough demand (us) to endure that someone will keep making them, even if it is in smaller runs at a higher cost.

That's a well laid out chart Jason, I've pinched a copy to laminate for my shop - pending your permission, of course! ;

Jason's got it! Tho' for a 5"g loco you could just about absorb the difference between 1/8 and 3mm without doing anything

... or failing a moisture trap, how log since you drained the receiver on the compressor?

I don't like the sound of that 'creaking' tho - I would be inclined to strip it, give the bores a good manual clean and oil, then replace the rings with some teflon tape, twisted into strings, and see if that makes a difference.

Rings? 'O' rings? Soft packing?

What's it for Pete? I would be inclined to deepen the exhaust port a bit more to help line things up and then go in from the screwed(?) hole in the bolting face.

The was a short(ish) series on building an optical comparator published in ME quite a few years ago - the author(s) were, from m, Canadian. I built a somewhat simplified version of it, but it doesn't see much use.

After chopping out the original worm wheel on mine I replaced the gearbox cover with a piece of clear Perspex, with a 1'2" x 26 tpi plug. I can see the oil level at a glance, and top it up without removing the cover. All this was several years ago, and no trouble in that department since. Just last week, however, I replaced both the driving and idle wheels as the flanges were worn to the point of almost not being there. The new wheels have cured the blade-jumping problems of recent times.

I've always had much better results with an ordinary 'D' bit rather than end mills/slot drills tho'

Glad to help Ramon - in return, how about a short introductory post in the 'Welcome' section?
22/10/2011 23:23:15
OK - took of finding, but you were, in fact on the ban list - no reason given. You registered on
31 January 2011, 04:19:24 and seem to have been banned shortly after that ??? Possibly non activation?

Anyhow - try again now.

So I gather you've got it sorted Ramon? I'll have a look and see if I can figure out what caused it.

I love my Stihls Jeff, switched over from Husky's about 30 years ago and stayed with 'em ever since - we currently have seven working saws here and a couple of weedeaters.
19/10/2011 21:03:35
The main problem is it's a McCulloch - best to throw it as far down the paddock as a double handed throw will allow and get a Stihl.
Thread: Scriber

BTW, old gramophone needles (if you can find any) made dandy fine scriber points. Resharpened concrete nails are OK as well.

"What do you mean by reheat treat?"

Chainsaw, or any other, files are too hard for a lot of uses, especially punches which will shatter, you need to let the hardness back by heating up until there is colour running up the steel and quench it when you reach the desired colour, which will correspond with a specific hardness. Google should turn up plenty of charts to show what is needed.

Turn a well fitting plug for the hole in the centre, with an accurate centre dot in that, and use your dividers in the usual way. Other than that - Wot Jason said!
