Thread: Late delivery of magazines due to adverse weather |
24/12/2010 19:19:47 |
To DC1,
ME 4393 has STILL not been delivered. PLEASE INSTRUCT YOUR PUBLISHERS TO REVIEW THEIR DISTRIBUTERS. No appologies for the capitals, but I am not convinced that you have given the contract to the best company. With unemployment so high you have a good stick with which to bargain & obtain a better level of service.

What has the above got to do with workshop floors? If you must wander, start a new thread.

Thread: levelling |

Hi David,
You refer to machine mounts supplied by J&L. Which ones? The J&L link shows several mounts. Unfortunately the site is very poorly set out & gives no info as to the different units. The prices range from £8 to £80 but give no useful data. The site appears to have been set up by someone with no technical knowledge.
Please state the ref No. or better still, another supplier who sets out his stall properly. Or am I missing something?

Thread: Which New Lathe; choices, choices... |
12/11/2010 15:22:55 |
When studying the photos that accompany the build articles in ME, in many instances it is possible to determine the lathes used. It is interesting to note that of the several well known "names", some use British machines, others use Far Eastern ones. The one thing that they have in common is that the end product is almost invariably excellent. This suggests that it doesn't really matter which is employed if the operator knows what he is doing. The "Second Hand British v Far Eastern" discussion/argument will keep emerging simply because it can be so interesting/provocative. I have concluded that any lathe is better than no lathe!

Thread: Drill Sharpening Jigs - Advice please. |
10/11/2010 21:55:14 |
I am surprised to note that no-one in this thread has mentioned the Proxxon drill sharpener. I raised the question of how to get the thing to work in a thread in Jan this year. Never did get any definitive answers. I now use the Harold Hall sharpening rest. The Proxxon has gone back under the bench. The Proxxon brand has been refered to in another thread. Use caution when purchasing this "make". Their more expensive items are EU sourced, but the cheaper products appear to be Far Eastern. "Engineered in Germany" is NOT the same as "Made in Germany"!

Thread: Why is everything you buy such rubbish!! |

As we live in a society where "out-sourcing" is much in favour, I propose that the govermnent of the UK should be out-sourced to Angela Merkles & Co.

Does anyone know the UK equivalent of USA steel specs 12L14 & 1144? A Google search has not been productive.

Good advice from Steve, but if there is a 3 jaw chuck, do make sure that BOTH sets of jaws are included. Not easy to obtain spare jaws!

Thread: late subscription delivery |

Hi,
My ME has not been delivered. Again. DC1, if you are on the ball then why not re-visit your distribution company & suggest an alternative, more competent provider?

Which ever prescription spectacles you buy, make sure that the lens are glass rather than plastic. Despite the claims of the optical firms, I find that plastic lens do scratch. Particularly when used in a workshop environment. Some well known optician outlets only offer plastic & do not always state this unless specifically asked. Contrary to what no doubt some will claim, I have not had a glass lens shatter in over 60 years of enforced spectacle wearing. (This includes youthful stupidity on motor-cycles).

Thread: Rotary table stops |
21/08/2010 10:56:19 |
Hi,
Thanks to those who replied re-the "collar" in the centre of my rotary table. It is just what you predicted; a 2/3 Morse adaptor that stands proud of the table. I was able to knock it out without much trouble. (My 50 ton press is out of commission). One of those little problems which are obvious once someone tells you! Another example of useful help from this forum.
Thanks,
Peter Gain.
PS to Ramon, the Nova crankcase is nearly finished. |
17/08/2010 19:03:04 |
Hi,
Thanks to everyone who replied so quickly. I think that the explanation is that said "collar" is in fact a MT2 - 3 adaptor. I have the table set up for machining a small crankcase at the moment so cannot confirm. But I now know what to look for when I break down the set up.

Hi,
An allied topic. I have a rotary table that has a small collar upstand protruding from the centre hole. The hole will accept a No. 2 MT but the 5mm upstand prevents securing work directly to the table.
Does anyone know how to remove this collar?
The table, which I purchased second hand, may be a Vertex. The finish suggests Far Eastern, it certainly does not appear to be European/USA.
All suggestions welcome.

Thread: My Account Log In |

Hi,
At random intervals (but not every time) when I open this window, the "My Account" box forgets my details & I have to re-enter them. Does anyone know how to prevent this rather irritating failure? (This is despite ticking the "Remember me" box).

Thread: ME Issue 4381 - 02 July - Subscription Copy Delivery ? |

To Kelvin Barber,
Hi,
My subscription copy was late. In view of the above complaints, is there a case for re-visiting the contracts for the printing &/or the distribution of "Ours"?

Edgar Westbury did not die young. Quite the opposite, I recall hearing him lecture at Sutton c1975(?) he was then quite elderly, but very approachable & willing to share his vast knowledge. ETW's booklet "Atom Minor III" is an excellent publication, I would go so far as to say a definite "must read" for all ICE beginners. As Neil writes, he was a very good auther. No doubt a member of the Sutton (Surrey) club can be more specific about his age.

Thread: Lathe Drive Motors, 1ph or 3ph? |
31/05/2010 22:29:38 |
Hi All,
Thanks for the replies & advice re-motor phases. It seems that 3ph is beneficial but not for the reasons that I at first considered. Having carefully read your replies, I will carry on with the existing motor but change to 3ph later.
I agree with Wallace, the modern Tyco motors are not a patch on the old Cromptons.

There are currently 2 advertisers in ME extolling the virtues of 3ph drive motors. One advert claims that a superior finish can be obtained due to a decrease in vibration. As I am no craftsman, anything that may improve my turning is welcome.
Please - no theortical dissertations. Does anyone have practical experience of replacing the single phase motor on a Super 7 with a 3 phase version? Useful comments will be appreciated. Peter Gain. |
