Thread: Magnetic chuck/plate construction |
09/06/2010 17:59:49 |
Gentlemen, I wish to build a magnetic chuck and because I am not as
computer adept as you lot, do not surf well for info. Can anyone suggest
sources they have seen which detail things like.. coil winding, horizontal
or vertical placement, parallel alignment, materials, voltages, size selection.
Acknowledgement will be given if an article eventuates. Thanks...GH |
Thread: What type of oil to use on a Milling machine |
24/01/2010 10:45:19 |
Evening all, as a steel boat owner I can add these words....
Zinc anodes are sacrificial for electrolysis, lots of stray currents in marinas and docks.
Zinc cream has kept steel turnbuckle threads unrusted for years in seaspray and rain.
But best of all is lanolin, such as that mentioned by Laurie. Tried all oils, sprays etc.
Lanolin such as Inox in pump or pressure form stays on and works even when handled.
Doesn't dry out, smell, discolour, attract dust or moisture, or wash off with coolant. Brill! GH |

David, you are lucky, I posted a similar question about MD65 some months ago and was ignored! Was it my breath? I will ride along on your site if you don't mind. Graham |

I use SWIO because 'She Who Is Obeyed' would look better to her,
if S ever learns to operate a PC! GH |

Dave C, FYI..... I bought a MD65 Hobbymat in Germany recently, for 240€, without any extra change gears or tools. 2 new belts of plastic cost me 24€ posted. No book yet. Graham |
Thread: Movable lathe |
21/08/2009 11:37:04 |
Hi! one of my favourite books was 'Moving Heavy Things' and it suggests pipe rollers under planks, works for me and my Eldorado weighs 600Kg. Another way, which I have used to move aircraft wheel bogies (with aircraft attached) is greased plates. One plate under the base (Glued on is OK) sits on a greased floor plate which butts up against a greased plate in the new position, or greased plates between the two positions, slide!
Floor plates can be quite thin, lifted for storage. Base plate should have load spread by bearers and for cleanliness should have the same dimensions as permanent position plate. When in correct position, through bolt both plates to floor. Yours to contemplate.

Thank you Sir, if I can do all that, great, but I will still have to learn how to transmit them!
Hope you can find the MEW references. GH |

Thread: Insert tip Boring bar |

Hello Bob, while looking into inserts for some heavier than usual cutting I found this website which answered many questions about flip-flop inserts and negative/no rake .
http://www.metalwebnews.com/howto/toolholder/toolholder.html May help you. Graham |
Thread: Hobbymat 65 |
18/07/2009 12:43:13 |
Was impressed with Prazimat features and concept but decided to start with what was one of the first few minilathes? to grow bigger than watchmaker size.
Noticed in the MEW Special Edition Readers' Workshop that the Hobbymat 65 was often seen in the background. That these eminent gentlemen had selected one was good enough for me. I would really appreciate advise on compatable tooling to support this bare machine, things like ' Emco travelling rests fit' or 'Arceurotrade 5" 4-jaw chucks will mount' and 'Clarke gear change wheels work'. Or even 'parts are still gettable at XYZ.com' Thanks Forummers. |
Thread: Verniers 101 |
30/06/2009 23:33:22 |
Remind me please, how it goes. I have a 5" chuck with a 10 deg indexing ring and I would like to make a 'banana' shaped vernier ring to put in between the fixed peg and the ring. You know, round one major (10 deg) peg hole then back nine on the vernier might give me an increase of 1 deg. Will it work?
Of course I first have to remember, or be told, is it nine into ten or ten into eleven or ???. Suppose I could make a wooden mock-up. Howgozit? GH

Thread: Granite Surface plates |
24/06/2009 23:54:47 |
Many thanks Clark and Holloway. She Who Is Obeyed wanted a layered look low garden wall so each Friday I collected offcuts of Marble, Granit and Ceasarstone from a nearby
Marble grinder to do it. 'No not that sort of stone, sandstony stone'.
Couldn't throw away such beautiful smooth shiny surfaces, so decided to square them and give to student engineers at the local Adult/Further Education school as beginners marking-out plates.
So pleased to hear they should be great for the purpose. Thank you.

Thread: Super 7 patterns when turning |
24/06/2009 23:10:25 |
Just a thought, doesn't cost a lot, try clamping a heavy weight on some part of the machine and seeing if the pattern changes. There may be a resonant vibration.
Someone once told me to lean on the tailstock when power feeding between centres and watch what happens to my carefully set-up machine. Anything is possible. |
