2. The confidence

3. The 'design' process

Have had a Hegner for over 20 years - excellent machine but not used much because it's a bit 'specialist'. This machine joined a number of others in succumbing to the dreaded 'surge'. The first major purchase to restock the intended workshop was ... a Hegner!! I subsequently came across a variable speed version and bought that, so there is a single speed machine spare. PM me if interested or I shall advertise it properly here once I get one of those circular 'tuits'blush

Thread: A Word of Warning
05/02/2015 10:56:20

Interesting that contributors refer to the "original B&D Workmates".The original Workmate (I have had one since the 60s) was NOT bodged by B&D!! It was properly constructed, had 2 x 4 beech clamps, was INTENDED to be stood on and the instruction book carried a safety warning something like "Do not sit astride the worktop while closing the clamps!" (brings tears to the eyes)surprise

Having searched widely for suitable info sources, have plumped for one of the 'for Dummies' series which seems, so far, to be pitched at exactly the right level! I have purchased both the Electronics and Arduino versions and will plough through them at my own, snail-like, pace.

The electronics version (and this forum) have already thrown up a head-scratcher ... 'inductor' - WTH is an inductor??? Book seems to say that it is just another name for what we used to call a 'coil', but references here don't seem to match thatdont know No doubt it will all become clear eventually.

60 years ago I 'blanked' electronics and went into 'learn by rote' mode after being told by our instructor that he didn't know which flow direction (Pos to Neg or Neg to Pos) was correct!! Maybe the interim years of confusion can be improved on!

Given that the likely bidders/buyers will be fellow MEs, I trust that they will be listed on the 'bay as the rubbish quality they seem to be!!frown

Roger, Russell, Neil thank you.

Points well taken and Neil has it right - no particular aim, just hoping to ingest enough learning to be able to read some of the posts on the forum, relating to this area, without thinking 'What on earth was that all about?' Hexadecimal, for instance, never featured anywhere in my working life and neither did integrated circuits etc - think MO/PA, valves and tuning coils and carbon pile regulators - the STR 18 was an ENORMOUS advance in comms technology for operators of that era!!!blush For this 79 year old, I think something like a 'John and Jane' book on electronics is needed!

Murray and Anthony, thank you. I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that this bit of kit is at least one step ahead of where I ought to be!!sad Having trawled for most of yesterday, everything I found assumed a greater knowledge (terminology/processes) than I have. My earlier plea for suggestions on primers for this area was, it seems, well founded!embarrassed Will continue the search and put the MFP to one side for a while.

Muzzer, and particularly Michael and Neil, thank you so much!

Quite amazing source of info. I should have gone back to the previous thread but I (wrongly) assumed that I had got as much as was available from that one and the original search came to an abrupt end in December with the house succumbing to the 'surge'sad

Given my electronic knowledge base, this will generate much head-banging but with the metal mangling toys still in limbo, I have no excuses for not getting down to it!! I realise that this stuff is 'old hat' for many of you but never having been exposed to it, my only efforts to apply it (monkey see, monkey do) speed controller from Jim Cox's book, resulted in a big bang and 'magic smoke'crying 2 ... "A little learning" etc.

Electronics

G'day all. Some time back I asked for advice re. the above item as to use and experiment. One (at least) of our members recognised it and reckoned it was a useful bit of kit. Still waiting for the house/workshop rebuild to complete - probably not before early Summer and would like to find something to engage the few remaining brain cells in the meantime. Can anyone suggest an electronics primer which could be used to allow experimentation with this kit, please? I assume it requires basic digital/electronics learning and I start from a basis of knowing Ohms Law and otherwise zilch! Any pointers/suggestions welcome.

How bizarre is all this talk of trolley locks? Apart from having one's 'domestic staff' to deal with this shopping chore, one uses W******e for one's comestibles, which as Alan Coren pointed out, was instituted to allow one to avoid the all the Chavs etc. at Tescos and Sainsburys!! (W******e customers are considered trustworthy enough not to need trolley security!!)

Seasonal Bah, Humbug to one and all!!smileywinkdevil

Thread: Diamond tool holder.??
07/12/2014 11:23:20

One of my last purchases before the workshop succumbed to the North Sea 'surge' was a Diamond tool-holder. Quite impressed with the results. Just previous to that I bought a used Myford tool holder which I have not seen elsewhere. Presented in a 'tailored' box, it was approximately 2" x 1" x 1/2" with an angled through hole in one corner to take 'Eclipse' type round HSS rod. The end was ground to match the surface of the tool-holder, providing clearance and rake and making height setting particularly easy. Again, very easy to sharpen, (single flat surface) and the results were superb (by my standards!!). As said above, not seen elsewhere nor have I read of anyone else using them.

Went to the Lowestoft Model Exhibition. - Brilliant effort! I hadn't realised that this was their first such Modex. On this showing they are on to a winner. Excellent parking (and helpful parking attendants) Easy access, no crowding, well laid out, some excellent models, some real oddities, full size steam transport, good rest areas and reasonable priced food. Can highly recommend it if they do a repeat in the future - congratulations and thanks to all involved!

Thread: Subscription department issues

Having made a bit of a hoo-hah about the Subs Dept competence earlier, I feel that I should acknowledge when they get it right. I have, today, received my subscription 'free gift' - very handy. So far, also, received two magazine issues so things proceeding as advertised. Many thanks to Neil for his interventions on my behalf - in school report terms, "Could do better" (for the Subs dept, NOT Neil!!)

Thread: Favourite old tools.......
21/10/2014 10:50:56

Very similar to the first mill I bought - a Hauser, 10mm collets and fully compatible with my first lathe - a Pultra, The slides were lever feed and it was in the 'brick-built outhouse' category. Too ignorant to realise what a gem it was and sold it on! Have done sillier things in life but not many!

Just reading Paddy Ashdown's diary in which he tells of a Parliamentary gathering at which he was chatting with Major and Blair. Major announced that he had been treating his goldfish for sunburn by applying ointment - apparently they are prone to burn easily - the goldfish, not politicians (unfortunately!)devil The treatment was successful but a local heron then gobbled up the lot! Think I shall stick with our cats - more than enough trouble!

I note from the latest ME that there is to be a show in the Lowestoft area next w/e. It is within reasonable striking distance for we N Norfolk residents (hour and a half-ish). Still no workshop rebuild yet but worth a visit?? Bit of a length of string question, I know.

Today received my second ME from this subscription ( 4493) so assume the arrangements are satisfactory. So far, no sign of the 'Free Gift'. Does anyone know what the delivery time-scale is for these items?
