Hmmm! - "As far as the BBC is concerned.............well, don't get me wound up in this festive season of good will to all men." Mike - the Beeb rightly gets knocked for its increasingly 'dumbed down' output but, occasionally, they can produce a tiny oasis of commonsense - rgds Bill Maybe the excess of turkey and plum duff has stirred interest that was absent four days ago!! rgds Bill

Thread: What Did You Do Today (2017) |

Not today, but for a few weeks I've been operating in Max-bodge mode, making and assembling what I shall refer to as a 'Lazy William". This is an equivalent of the domestic 'Lazy Susan' - the rotary device for multiple eats etc. This version combines (as you can see) Fobco Star, Dore-Westbury mill and Perfecto powered shaper. Demonstrably, it is functional rather than elegant and built to my standard tolerances of 'Close enough for Government work'. It centralises non-lathe work and the casters make it easy to move. I publish it not with any pride but simply because, at 82 with a nadgered back, knee and hip, I did it ALL myself. Principles involved were those of Alexander of Greece(????) who said "Give me a long enough lever and I will move the Earth" ... or similar. As a 'Bah Humbug' adherent myself, I nevertheless wish all members, of what is surely the best of on-line forums, a very Merry Xmas and a splendiferous New Year. rgds Bill PS At least one NY resolution will be ... Ken, I have no idea of the quality of your work (and no wish to find out) but if it is on a par with your bloody-minded determination to attempt to extract 'something for nothing' from this forum, you appear to be well placed! As has been pointed out, the Ts & Cs are pretty clear but your ability to understand clear English seems not to be on a par with your professed engineering skills. The 'I want' syndrome seems to be ever more present in some of today's society. Now where's that 'ignore member' button! rgds Bill |

Re. Autocad, I sent SWMBO (version1) on a round-the-world trip back in the early 90s. In Hong Kong she picked up some locally available program CDs , with no knowledge of what they were. One turned out to be a 'de-dongled' Autocad, (legit version was circa £2k, I think). Foolishly thinking that I could make use of it, I bought my most expensive paperback - £55.00 - a user manual. Optimism over ability can only produce one outcome ... my most expensive throwaway ever!! rgds Bill |

Thank you Robbo et al - just had another attempt with D-W Yahoo, same result, no access. rgds Bill |

Philip - much favoured for early gas turbine (NOT B.....Y JET!!!) powered aircraft - and viewed with keen 'interest'!! rgds Bill |

Thank you, Michael and Robbo. That makes sense. Just have to bite my fingernails for a bit - or do something else useful, for a change. rgds Bill |

Thank you Les. I Think that I have done the preliminaries (signed in, etc,) but the 'Purple Button' escapes me!! The following is how the page appears with evidence of my sign-in circled. Any thoughts as to what I am missing, please? rgds Bill |

Feel a bit silly asking this, but how does one access files/ post messages on Yahoo groups, please? The group I'm interested in is the Dore- Westbury Mill. I have been a member for about a week and am able to read threads on the 'Conversations' tab but the 'Help' instructions for posting are invalid (No 'New Topic' function available) and the 'Files' tab remains covered by a 'Do not enter' sign. Undoubtedly the problem lies with me but any pointers from those familiar with Yahoo, please? rgds Bill |
Thread: SWMBO's Xmas pressie!! |
16/12/2017 21:21:23 |
Just a quick update. An 'executive decision' was made and, since that which was wanted can't be had, I've got a Roberts Stream 107 - a box of digital finaigling which seems to do most everything except make the tea and provide LW reception. Had a play ( just to make sure it works!) and quite impressed, not least by the display which is legible even to me. One big plus is that it uses rechargeable batteries, given the DAB's enormous appetite for batteries. It also has WiFi connectivity so SWMBO may be able to tune in to 'Strine' LOCAL radio commentary on the imminent demise of the barbecued bails!! rgds Bill |

" so much so that I have just finished fitting the same system to my new EMCO 14D Lathe ( well, nearly one year old now..) ... After doing the ELS on the 14D, I finally re-started on a project that began more than 15 years ago - A Spot Welder..." Joe - apart from being totally mind-boggled by the output level of your efforts, can you please explain how you manage to get at least twice as many hours in your days as those allotted to mere mortals like me, please?? The effect of your posts is akin to that described by JS (won't refer to him as 'late', as he is still a major force in the forum!) when writing of ME visitors coming back from viewing Cherry Hill's models - a head-shaking, distant gaze of wonderment ... at least that's how I react. Jason B et al have a similar effect and it produces both admiration by the bucketload ... and depression, 'cos there's no way I would EVER reach a tenth of that competence!! rgds Bill |
Thread: SWMBO's Xmas pressie!! |
13/12/2017 11:41:27 |
Gentlemen ... Wow!! Marvellous response but you can see the problem!! Ady's link will keep me busy for a while although I'm fairly sure that the DAB/LW combination will defeat me. As Professor Higgins put it, "why can't a woman be more like a man?" (apologies to Delicious Debs et al rgds Bill |
12/12/2017 23:09:45 |
After months of enquiring, I have finally been told what is SWMBO's 'most wanted' Xmas pressie ... and it appears not to exist!! 1. Digital 2. Radio/Alarm 3 Offering DAB, FM, LW (she's completely hooked on TMS cricket commentary) 4. Light enough to pack for travel and 5. Battery/mains powered. Lots of versions which satisfy some/most of those criteria, but NOTHING with them all. Any pointers, please??? rgds Bill |
Thread: Dore-Westbury drawings. |
10/12/2017 19:04:40 |
Michael - thank you, yes, it appears to indicate so - flags up my name etc.. Keith - thank you - that sounds probable; only joined yesterday so that could well be the problem. rgds Bill |
10/12/2017 18:23:50 |
Thank you Dave but, no, born and bred but non-resident for many a year. Michael - that's what I would have expected but putting the mouse over the 'files' button generates a 'No-Entry' sign ... as it does for all buttons except 'Conversations'. I'm probably doing something stupid but not familiar with Yahoo, so don't know what rgds Bill |
10/12/2017 17:34:12 |
I recently bought another D-W mill (sold the previous one some time back). There are notable differences between this one and the previous and while it came with the build instructions, there are no drawings. I understand that the Yahoo D-W group do have drawings and I've joined, but not able to access the files. Can anyone explain how one accesses the Yahoo files or has copies of the drawings, please? rgds Bill |
Thread: Machinery transport wanted. |
03/12/2017 18:56:30 |
Thank you Robert - that's the sort of info I was after. The D-W is no problem - I could (and might have to) put it in my Berlingo. It's the distance and lack of daylight for what would, for me, be a 9 hour driving day ... at 82, not overly welcome! rgds Bill |
03/12/2017 16:31:27 |
Search for machine transport brought up this thread. I need to get a D-W mill plus stand from Solihull to N Norfolk. I would think it's probably a bit small to use Landylift. Can't find any other recommendations and Shiply are definite no-nos from past experience. Does anyone have good experience to recommend, please? rgds Bill |
