Thread: Ally Pally show

Myself and three friends are going Sunday, we are catching the train from Sandy Bedfordshire to Alexandra Palace via Finsbury Park for the princely sum of £6.00 return each, no need to drive or park.

My job takes me to a different university every day of the week and when I'm driving around the campus looking for some where to park etc I see the "students" and think is this what the future holds for the country, and those I have to train on equipment always give me the view the lights are on but nobody's at home.

MikeW,

In the last three years the company I work for has taken on four engineering apprentices all straight from school and all didnt have a clue, they all do day release at Northampton College in mechanical and electrical engineering subjects and they also get to learn the basics of lathe and mill work they spend the rest of the week with us learning the job which when they have done the three years course they will become service engineers working around the country.

Thread: Glass filled nylon 66 granules.
12/01/2014 10:17:57

Gentlemen,

Another point not mentioned is that if the granules are over heated they will give off an acid vapour, whilst installing a robot onto an IMM an operator purged the injection barrel of a machine in the same room with a different material than had been used and didnt turn the heat down after a short while the room was cleared because of runny eyes and saw throats. Its a regular job in IMM shops to also clean the building steel work of acid to stop corrosion.

Same here, there are at least six scrap yards around me, one is a very big national company and they all use the mark 1 eye ball when sorting metals.

MikeW,

One of the shops I remember is Gamages, my Gtandfather used to buy stuff from them for his model engineering efforts, he would then take my Brother and I every christmas in his taxi to see the model railway on the top floor.

I annoy my wife by dismantling old household electrical items for parts and give them a second life.

Happy new year Gentlemen,

I took one of my Lister engines one hundred miles yesterday for an open day crank up at the Twyford Waterworks to find I was the only one daft enough to attend, lashed it down all day but got to look at the stripped boilers that are being brought back to working order to power the large Triple expansion pump engine in the next room. **LINK**

James,

Had a senior moment earlier, the motor is a TEC as found here **LINK** I've found my paperwork when I searched for it myself.

James,

I have the same lathe as you and have looked at the options, I have a Siemens inverter and when funds allow I have also done a web search for three phase motors and there is a direct dimensional motor type for the lathe of the same make, TYCO.

Thread: Flood protection
15/12/2013 19:32:29

Gentlemen,

A friend of mine lives on the banks of the River Avon in a house built by the Bristol River Authority, the house was built a a signal house on the high side of the river bend to control stop go signals either side of the bend so it could stop ships from colliding in the tight bend, the area was known for its flooding of the river banks so the house is built on a brick base about four feet above the ground and around the house is a Bunded wall approx three foot high with a steel gate which seals with the wall through rubber seals and is locked into place with clamps, all of the drainage etc is high up as well, my friend has never had to test the defence but the river authority obviously thought it necessary to build it that way.

Thread: A Chuck and a Rotary table
24/11/2013 09:42:27

Graham,

As others are suggesting I'm making a boss which fits into the the base of the chuck with an MT2 taper, you can but these soft so that you can machine them from RDG as I did recently at the East Midlands exhibition, I also have a SOBA 6" rotary table and I bought a four jaw with through bolt holes that then screw into T nuts in the table T slots. By using a four jaw chuck you will tend to fit odd shaped items in it so you will centre around the part you wish to machine so total accuracy will not be necessary.

Thread: Machining a soft-ended MT2
12/11/2013 20:20:00

I made a "improvised" draw bar about ten years ago with normal studding and it is still giving good service, no thread damage showing. I tighten it up to pull the cutter head only to grip and no more with no problems.

Gareth,

I've just bought a 3 - 2 morse taper for my lathe to machine a similar item its open ended so that I can use a draw bar to hold it, I bought it from Arceuro and found it to be very cheap but of high quality.
