Thread: Couple of things at Lidl
01/02/2017 07:45:04

I have bought numerous items over the years and have been pleased with most of them. The ones I keep my eye out for are the double tube syringe adhesive in red for 24hr set and yellow for qhick set I am nearly out of these so I hope they come around again,I highly recomend them. The other item that I am waiting for is the magnetic tool bar which takes time to come around again. But all of the items are at a price so we shouldn't grumble if they don't meet our quality expectations.

Thread: Cheap but decent Mini Tape Measure
08/01/2017 13:04:00

The building trade changed to metric and used mm no cm but years later when employing apprentices I had a job to get them to forget cm. But we still bought timber as 4"*2" 3mt long. It"s hrd to accept change as I still rember when picking up a 20Kg bag of coal that an original bag of cement weighed nearly 3 times as much, but then I was able to unload 7 tons on my own they were the days or were they.Malt to the Isle of Juro from our malting in Grantham went in 18st bags try that if you can.

Thread: The Beauty of Tools
06/01/2017 00:46:47

Power tools although expensive to replace are not as important to a tradesman as the hand tools that he has owned and worn in over the years.I have had tools stolen from site twice and the ones I missed the most was a French hand cut rasp a Marples butt gauge and a small bag of hand made moulding tools from before ww2 which I used for plastering in difficult places. The rest of my tools were easily replaced the treasured ones one can't.

Thread: Banding on turned work
04/01/2017 16:40:38

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions,I will look into these and try to find the solution. The tightening of the gibs seems like the place to start. The fitters had the saddle off and I presume cleaned out the half nuts.It turns accuratly over the full length of the bed,so solving this would cheer me up no end.

The banding is not helical and I did mention this problem to the fitters , the belt was replaced but the pulleys were like this when bought .I have a 1957 S7 which I had reground 10 years ago and this lathe is still a joy to use but this one gets on my nerves.

The banding shows on diameters below 1" with cuts of .5mm under power.I bought the large bore at the Myford sale it was made in 2001,I had it serviced by Darron & Pete the ex Myford fitters. They checked the bearings and they were fine. The v pullys on the headstock spindle although tight on the mandril do not run true and could this be the possible cause. The gears are meshing correctly although I have not checked the gearbox gears.

Thread: Best way to cut stock to size
21/12/2016 06:55:10

I have used a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade for cutting 3mm plate lengthways, don't force the cut and patience is required .A word of warning about using angle grinders, not about safety but consequenses that have arisen from my use of the tool.I was asked by the client on site if I knew what was wrong with her window as it had become spotted and grainy.I didn't know.On another site I was cutting mesh close to the house and the sparks hit the window and the steel particles melted and stuck to the glass, which I had to replace at £400. Now I was aware of the dangers and what I had done to the first ladies window Which I peplaced for £80.Moving on to another extension I had to cut another lintel, the consevatory was 7mt long so I thought I would be safe, but The sparks had reached the far end helped by the wind and wrecked £650 worht of glass.Whilst cutting outside remember my experiences and make sur you have the sparks well away from any glass.

Thread: How Do You Measure Your Holes?
16/12/2016 23:50:00

I made myself some tapered parallels in various sizes to the same angle with a rounded edge on the straight side and use them in pairs in the bore and measure the projected end of the parallels with a mike.I have found them invaluable for measuring deep bores and for finding how much taper there is in the bore which you can then rectify. For small holes I use all of the previous methods posted.

Thread: myford nose thread
03/12/2016 08:11:21

All is not lost, after removing the mandrel I had a think before I started afresh. If I mounted anER32 collet chuck with a 1/2" ground bar in I could mount the bar in the four jaw to run true and scim the shaft .fortunately i had previously drilled the tail end and was able to get the rotating centre in to hold it whilst turning.Did it work, did it ever,I now have a runout of .07 mm 2.5 thou, I am chuffed ,thanks again for your help.

Frank

I turned the register and the witness depth to 1.036 and proceded to cut the thread , half way there the tool jammed in the thread and rotated the work in the chuck .I finished the thread hoping all was well the thread worked fine and a shaving was required off the register, this showed out of truth.I tested with a collet chuck and some ground bar and I had a runout of twenty thou,.Another shi- -tter for the bin.I am changing tack after this and am going to make the mandrel between centres with plenty of allowance for tools and driver, fingers crossed.
