Hi Paul,

Unfortunately, I have not been able to contact Mr Law or his son recently.

If I hear anything I will certainly let all know.

Thread: Message to the Webmaster!
16/02/2012 21:33:57

If you (the site owners) are as you say, paying many thousands for this editor or the forum software, then you are quite frankly wasting your money. The editor and forum leave a lot to be desired, there are many better that are in constant use which are public domain and provide far better functionality than this!

Thread: New website editor

There used to be a free spell checker for IE called IESpell, but I don't think it works with IE9, havent tried it as we have found so many incompatibility issues, we stick to IE8 for when its needed but use anything else in preference cool

Perhaps a more serious problem is that, for me at least, clicking on the "quote" button at the end of a post no longer works. It takes me to the editor but the quote doesn't appear.

Russell.

Just to prove a point, I have quoted you Russell, it works for me, I'm using the latest Firefox release on a fully patched Windows 7 platform.

DC1, I appreciate what you are saying - It is about a text EDITOR on the WEBSITE. however, it is not about a 'website editor', that is something entirely different, I suspect that the title has drawn people in out of curiosity but the title is misleading, we are talking about a text editor not a website editor, the connotations of the two are entirely different!

16/02/2012 13:09:55

A more appropriate title would be something like

New Forum text editor

This post is most definitely NOT about a website editor

Thread: Automatically 'closing threads' idea
13/02/2012 22:16:08
I don't agree with the suggestion of threads being 'automatically' closed however, I do think that the originator of the thread should have the option to close or freeze the thread.
The site moderators should already have this facility and should excercise this with reasonable discression

If you have problems with Inernet Explorer, then go to tools and select compatibility view.
Pretty poor I must admit, you would expect that a browser would support backward compatibility by default but Microsoft choose not to.
Simple answer, - Use Another Browser, you have no doubt found that Firefox works well, as does Google Chrome and others. - More weight to the MS anti-trust movement !!
Thread: Tool Holders
13/02/2012 17:18:10
Hi Kevin,
As Dusty says, contact RDG in the first instance, they are, in my experience, most helpful.
If they were sold as genuine Myfor QCT holders then they should be fully compatible with a genuine Myford QCT, if you have anything but a genuine QCT then you have to accept that there will be compatibility issues, but RDG should be your first port of call.
As an aside, not sure how you created your post but it has resulted in a very large bold font which whilst very readable, takes up a lot of screen real estate for a small quantity of text!

cheers

Thread: Thomas Russell Crampton Locomotives
13/02/2012 17:13:11
Does anyone know if plans have ever been published for any of Thomas Cramptons locomotives.
I am primarily interested in the 8 wheel design but any info or leads will be greatly appreciated.
I know there are some scale models in existance but have not been able to track down the builders.
When my TE's are completed, I have a hankering to build a loco but don't want to build anything 'run of the mill'. I like to be a bit different

thanks in anticipation

Thread: Yet Another Digital Subscription gone AWOL
06/02/2012 18:27:48
I have avoided buying into the so called digital subscription for pretty much all of the reasons outlined above.
I don't really want paper copies, and am running out of space to store both ME and MEW - BUT >>> If I cannot easily download the digital issues I have subscribed to, then why pay £30 for a years mags only to NOT have them at the end of the subscription, surely there is some legal precedence here, if you have paid for something, then you are entitled to have it - forever!!. If I buy a paper copy, I have that, and I also have access to the digital issues, If I pay for a digital subscription, I should have the same. I should have the digital issue forever.
MHS are, incompetent and paranoid to the extreme.- it took me 6 months just to get a replacement for a non delivered issue, even though they had it listed as a back issue for 5 of those 6 months!
It is a shame because both ME and MEW are generally good publications, but I am being tempted away by other publications which seem to have better respect for their customers.

Thread: Lidl cast steel vice-16.99
03/02/2012 22:18:16
Can't agree more, just don't expect more than you are paying for.
I bought a set of core drills, for next to nothing, used them, did the job, threw them away, but they paid for themselves in the job, ( and I still have the aluminium box left over)
The point I was trying to make, and may not have, is that whatever these stores sell are not top quality and that we should not have great expectations of them. Some will exceed those expectations, some will not.

There are bargains to be had however, they should never be considered as 'engineering' grade tools etc.
I have a hoist similar to that which John alludes to and probably from a similar source, cheap and functional, but still of dubious quality. If put to the test ( i.e the load limit) the motor gets hot very quickly, I'm not sure how they work out the rating on these items but I'm sure they are over-rated, if you know what I am getting at
03/02/2012 20:09:10
Don't trust anything from Lidl. Aldi or any of the cheap s%t sellers.
What they sell are budget items which are aimed at the DIY, not a lot of work, weekend bodger. They are definitely not suitable for even the average home shop model engineer. They lack fit and finish, accuracy and longevity, i.e hit em hard enuf an they WILL break, trust me, I've tested them!

If you want a decent vice, pay the money and get something from a reputable manufacturer that can give provenance to their product and back that up with a guarantee that is truly supportable.
Try taking something back to Lidl or Aldi that costs more than £9.99 and see the hoops you have to jump through to get them to honour their so called guarantee. I will never buy a product from these charlatans again.
Thread: Transporting a Beaver Model A mill

Moved my Ajax AJT4 without dismantling, 2 men 1 trailer, 1 4x4 pickup a winch and some Egyptian rollers - oh and a couple of bum puckering moments, but with a little care it can be done. In hindsight, I would probably remove the head and turret to make it a little less top heavy.

might be worth emailing [email protected] there is some infoo on his site regarding Norton grinders but I didn't see anything exactly like your mode

I've been using the 3W tri-led MR16 bulbs from Maplin in my mill lights for a while now, the light output from 2 of gives a more even illumination than a 20W halogen lamp and has a warmer, more natural light.

If you look at forums running on platforms such as VBulletin or PHPBB, you will see that they have a proper search engine built in where you can specify criteria for the search. I've got no idea what this site is based on or what the backend db consists of, but any decent respectable forum will utilise a SQL database backend such as MySQL. Searching the database does not consume bandwidth as the search is conducted on the db server and the results returned as a php or dhtml file or similar. I do feel that there has been a great oversight on the design of this forum and the (lack of) facilities it provides. But then MHS won't even let us download the digital mags we pay for without going through a great deal of pain.
There is a lot of information on this forum but it is an absolute pain to find it.
It is about time MHS started to listen to its members and made the whole experience a more enjoyable one

Thread: Storage of taps, dies, slot drills and end mills
26/01/2012 22:29:04
I use plastic tubes that the domestic engineer donates to me on a regular basis, these normally contain vitamin C tablets or multi vitamins. They are around 20mm diameter and can be cut down to accomodate various materiels.
I mount these in scrap boards of MDF, pine or whatever comes to hand. With a small quantity of light oil or paraffin they provide a rust free storage environment for many small components including taps, milling cutters, drill bits etc.

cheers
