Thread: The effect of lubrication on reaming tolerance |
18/03/2017 00:21:58 |
It's not an old wives tale, it does work and I have posted about this before on this and other forums.
Tightest hole you can get use neat trike, after than soluble oil ad then neat cutting oil.
To get a reamer to cut undersize rub a hardened dowel pin down the flutes, top to bottom. To get it back on size again rub the same dowel pin down the front face of the flutes. Top to bottom.
To stop a machine reamer leaving circular tram lines in the work which is caused by one tooth being higher than the others, take a fine stone and slightly round the front chamfers were they meet the flutes. You would never use a lathe tool ground to a sharp angle without breaking the corner with a stone but reamers are sent out this way as it's cheaper. |

Good board tracker "build thread" here for those that want to make one, .
That link posted by Jason is a good one but doesn't tell the whole story. When he first started blogging about this it made me wonder just where it was going, a lot of work for a static exhibit but then when he's sorted all the design out and realised what problems he might have and how to over come them, the builder, Paul Brodie then announce he was doing a limited production run on these bikes.
From what I can gather he's built 6 so far, all have sold for well over a quarter of a million dollars each and taken just over a year to build.
If we put that into the context of building a model which is probably over a longer period but not full time and you then take the value of that model, there is a massive difference but many even on this forum have the machinery and skills to build something like this IF you can spot the niche market.
Not bad retiring with one and a half million as opposed to selling a choo choo for 10k max ?
Oopps forgot the link.

This is what you call home made
1948 Jones 250cc twin DOHC, Max revs 11,000 in 1948 but we used to keep them down to 9,000
At least it's a good use for Myford change wheels [ Actually they are all in steel except the mag wheel in alloy but they were made at Myfords. Edited By John Stevenson on 16/03/2017 23:05:00 |
Thread: Trepanning a deep hole in en24t |

A spark eroder will take a minimum of 5 hours to drop down 110mm. At a running rate of say £70 per hour that will cost you £350 to save a £10 piece of EN24.
Priceless - literally |

I have found these very useful for boring and mounting back toolposts on.
Made for a Sieg C6 but adaptable to a lot of things and not expensive.
You certainly couldn't buy the material and tooling and make one. |

By the time you have made the tool, broke it and remade it you could have just bored it out. It's not like it's gold, you are not even saving pence on material given the time needed and mistakes made. |

LOL. |

I already have a couple of these but commercial units and they just stay in by the grip of the Morse taper. I can't fit a drawbar either so I cannot see any problem with this design at all.
End of the day bearing in mind we have the drawings only, you drill and ream the holes in the turret from the headstock so you guarantee alignment. |

Most owners see sense and find it better to change the lathe .
Just as long as they still keep it somewhere and don't scrap it.
That's just to prove to future users that we as a country were able to make crap just as well as the modern cheap imports. |

OK for everyone coming from the North it will be further but for people coming from the South, it will be shorter. Swings and roundabouts. Its no wonder suppliers pull out of the shows with all the bitching. Far easier to handle an on line form Edited By John Stevenson on 14/03/2017 14:27:39 |
