Thread: Boxford VM 30 spindle bearings |

I get the occasional drip through spindle. I don't mind this as it tells me the little bit that does is passing through and replenishing the bearings. Nick Mine too!

Morris Oils also do an equivalent in small(ish) quantities. The bearings are easily adjusted as described by Kwil. If you get stuck and are in the south let me know and I'll give you a hand. Edited By Rex Hanman on 22/09/2015 19:11:56 |
Thread: Is it possible to convert a 1968-71 model Myford Super 7 to metric |
14/09/2015 11:53:18 |
Back in the 1970's when this country pretended to turn metric the school workshop where I taught metalwork had 4 Boxford lathes and 2 Colchesters, all were of course imperial. To promote metric teaching I was provided with metric "conversion" dials for each lathe. This was fine for small increments but as soon as the dial turned greater than a full revolution things became totally confusing. After a chorus of complaints across Hampshire we were eventually supplied with new metric feedscrews, nuts and dials. They didn't provide new leadscrews so metric screwcutting wasn't possible. This is really the only way to convert an imperial lathe to metric and I suspect it might be quite pricey to do now. It's some time since I used a Myford, but if I recall correctly, some have a dial at the end of the leadscrew. In your case it would be hard to convert this without changing the leadscrew too. There must be examples of people converting Myfords so maybe there is a conversion kit available? Others may know more than I do. |

I made a Eureka many years ago and used it on my Boxford to form relieve a gear hob I was making. It worked absolutely fine, though I did use a low speed. |

Work in what you are most comfortable in.....less chance of making mistakes. Avoid mixing metric and imperial threads as you will soon forget which is which! |

Not wishing to harp on about this but both of you photos of the lathe show the 6 position joystick in the upward position but central. It must be pushed either to the left or the right. If you have since done this then apologies for repeating myself. |

Thread: colcehster bantam 1600 mk2 |

I have a Bantam Mk2 but it is an 800 so can't help much with the electrical problems. However, a couple of thoughts re lead/feed screws..... Assuming there is indeed drive to the input side of the gearbox check the following. Are all the leavers on the front of the headstock fully engaged? Any one of them in a "mid" position will result in no output from the gearbox. In particular, make sure that the 6 position "joystick" is pushed left or right. In mid position you get nothing. If all is well, both the leadscrew and the feed shaft should turn but if the feed shaft does and the leadscrew doesn't check the small dog clutch on the left hand end of the leadscrew, just against the gearbox. Many years ago the school workshop had a couple of earlier Bantams. They were Hawk and Eagle models. Both of these had a shear pins in the drive. The kids regularly managed to shear them, I was constantly replacing them. However, I can not see any shear pins on mine so maybe Mk2s didn't have them. Hope this helps. |

I too have a VM30. Great little machines. Your questions seem to have been answered by others. When I wanted to top up the gearbox I found it difficult to obtain the lubricant in small quantities but eventually found that Morris Oils do an equivalent in a small(ish) tin. |

On the day I borrowed a fellow Andover club member's driving trolley. It was so much better than the heavy old club ones that I am now making my own. I intend to do a short write up for the ME mag so if it gets printed you may see a few pics.

Not the busiest two days but we all had a great time. One engine covered 6.4 miles! We will hold another Rob Roy rally next year, but probably just a one day event. All will be welcome.

Many thanks for that JohnS. In spite of a good plug in ME, postings on several related forums, e mails and posters sent to about a dozen "local" clubs I received just three enquiries! As far as I know, none of them are coming.
There should be about 5 present tomorrow but who knows, others may turn up. Looks as though the weather might just hold up. Nice to know there are examples ouside the UK!
Cheers,

Andover club have a Rob Roy rally on Friday and Saturday (August 17th and 18th). Response has been poor but there will be a few examples in steam. All welcome.

Hi Heronsgate, To answer your question, anyone is welcome to come. Our lease precludes us from having open days for the general public, therefore any of our events are technically "by invitation only". This doesn't mean we turn away unexpected visitors but after many years without a site we have no wish to upset our landlord.
For this reason we have to be a little careful. Usually on our open days we get a few visitors from our neighbouring clubs and are not inundated. That said, we hope that the Rob Roy event will be well attended. If you or anyone else would like to come please email me or phone me and I will supply more details, you will be most welcome! |

August.
If any one would like to attend this event or would like more details, they should please contact me at....
