I have three backplate mounted ER collet holders, all have a TIR of less than 0.005mm as best as I can measure, can't vouch for the accuracy of the collets themselves though.

I bought a MT2 ER25 chuck from a well known site for not a lot of beer vouchers in the hope I might be lucky and get a good one, I was wrong! The morse taper had several areas where there was a 'dip' in the surface, the drawbar hole was off centre, the face where the nut makes contact hadn't been finished at all and has deep workholding marks on it and finally the TIR was 0.3mm +.

My other MT ER chucks are from more reputable sources and are all 0.01mm or better.

Hi Murray,

I used it in anger yesterday afternoon (checking everything as I went just in case) and now wonder why I didn't fit one before! There are some functions that will probably see little/no use but things like the 1/2 function are a godsend.

I have a couple of edge finders like you describe and now I don't have to worry about adding or subtracting that extra 2mm off the 2.5mm pitch leadscrew!

Finally got around to fitting the DRO to my mill/drill after it'd been sat in the garage for ages!

It's not the best bit of work compared to most but it works and I'm more than happy with it

I must admit to using the DCGT intended for aluminium/non-ferrous on steel as well, 0.8mm radius tip.

Works a treat for me for finishing with swarf like dust (wouldn't risk a heavy cut with it though)

Having just returned from taking my daughter to university the people in the Premier Inn we were staying in and the Beefeater next door (excellent steaks by the way) were really confused by my Jersey accent and the fact that I also throw in Jerrriais and French while I speak, just the way it is. As it happened a lot of the staff were were uni students just about to to go back to their respective studies and found it quite interesting to chat about it.

Thank you all very much for the replies. Duncan that sounds like an excellent idea, to be honest even if it costs a few extra quid it'll be worth it. After all four years at Uni is going to do enough damage to my pension plans

Matt, the 51 pubs count came from the Uni, mind you they are creative arts, not mathematics!

Completely off topic I know but next week I'm bringing my daughter over to start her four year course at Farnham University.

We're flying to Southampton and as far as i can tell the best way is to travel by train , it seems up to Woking and then back down to Farnham. (I appreciate that hiring a car maybe better but as the worlds worst flier after two engine fires and a near crash, if I survive the landing driving's out of the question)!

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

(Apparently there are 51 pubs around the University but my wife has forbidden me from attempting to visit them all in the three days we're there   )

Not so much what I've done, more a 'what to do' !

My magnetic DRO has arrived today so lots of thinking to be done. Just hope I can complete the fitting in under 18 years unlike my last project.

I use a facet fuel pump with a non-return valve. Just a fast drip feed, mostly for parting, but with neat cutting fluid. Works for me!

Can't remember where I read it from but something to do with the correlation between the tangent of the included angle and the coefficient of friction of the material(s)

A Finished Project

I started a Hemmingway kit for a knurling tool a couple of months after my daughter was born and now I've finished it (just about). I'm really pleased because I'm able to show it to her before she goes to university in a few months.
I know some jobs can take a while but.........

Looking at it now I can see errors left right and centre but I've left it as each part was done, the supports made 18 yrs ago, arms 15 etc.
I thought about tidying it up a bit but I quite like it as is because it gives me physical proof that after all these years my skill level has hardly improved one iota.

Never mind, I can start another project now, just hope I can see it out!

Thanks to you all for your help, everything is now hunky dory!

I am not the worlds most patient person and tend to attack things like a bull in a china shop and go off at tangents so I decided to take a couple of steps back, poured myself a large drink and thought things through before even looking at the lathe.

I'm pleased I did and started from the beginning because I have been a complete plonker and mis-diagnosed the problem!

This time I used a torch and wore my glasses and found that the motor wasn't stalling like I thought just that the motor pulley appeared to be stationary which isn't the case. That's why I couldn't find anything wrong with the electrics, there isn't anything wrong!

Cutting a long story short after just a few minutes and another drink it has turned out to be the belt from the motor to the countershaft has stretched just enough to slip when under more substantial loads. Adjusting the motor frame to take up the slack appears to have it sorted.

Thanks Gents, Looks like I'll be busy today then! The centrifugal switch can be heard clearly as the motor stops so I think that's OK but I might wire the motor directly to the mains bypassing the nvr and reversing switch just to check before I start ripping the headstock apart,

Well I've checked the relay which seems that the contacts are clean and voltage in/out is the same 239V.

I think I'll put a DTI against the spindle register and push with the tailstock.

Could a problem with the rear thrust bearings cause the spindle to push back and tighten up whilst turning?
