Can anyone point me to a design or source of designs for a good size vertical model copper boiler?   I have several stationary engines I would like to run from it (one at a time), the smallest being a Stuart 10H and the largest being a single cyl horizontal of approx 2" bore and 4" stroke.  I appreciate the latter might demand a boiler size beyond what is practical for copper, but I would accept running it slowly.

I was thinking of something perhaps 5" in diameter and 12" or so tall, coal fired, with some tubes, and chimney etc for some decent draught.   I have been casting around but have not found a good design yet.

Thanks

Martin

Hi Martin,

Look at GLR Distributors website at www.modelmakingsupplies.co.uk. They do a 4" diameter x 8" tall vertical boiler offering various kit options from just the materials to a complete finished boiler. It would be suitable for some of the smaller Stuart models but 2" bore X 4" stroke would make it sweat a bit I think!!

I am about to embark on building one of these having just completed their  horizontal mill engine "Tina". This engine is 1" bore x 1 1/2" stroke and this boiler is designed to run engines of this size. I believe this boiler can be built to run on either coal or gas. I've elected to go the gas route for 2 reasons. Firstly the boiler is slightly simpler to make because it does not require a fire hole and secondly I want to be able to steam it indoors so coal firing is out because of upsetting the smoke detectors and the domestic management ( she who must be obeyed)!

Hope this helps.

regards, Martin.

Martin P,

You might check the Home Model Engine Machinist forum, I have downloaded at least 1 boiler design, just have not built it.

Some of the other Model Engineering forums probably will also have some informatin.

Hope this helps you.

John

Martin P., check back issues of M/E, seem to remember a vertical test boiler of substantial size.

John, if the boiler download contains the initials AFC in the title you won't have any sleepless nights over safety issues. This guy is old school calcs and practice and knows his onions.
