Thread: Back to Imperial
21/09/2021 09:06:49

So, back in the sixties when Ingineering was supposed to change to metric in GB., it was hard to do a full change over so one had to become bi-sexual for not only lengths but later in money. Despite working in metric, I still did (and do) go through mental gymnastics converting back or forwards to get a "Feel" for a tangible size. Since dressmaking sizes are taught to the youfs, 25cm means s*d all to me but 250mm is about 10".

Then skipping on a few decades and job changes we go into the electronic industry and find that although the PCB panels are laid out to metric dimensions, the pre forms for things like transistors and ICs are IMPERIAL spacing thanks to Uncle Sams refusal to go metric. No problem for one offs but for thousands? and then having press tools made to punch hundreds of holes through the laminate to mount the components. Given that all measurements should be generated from an X-Y datum point, the use of sub datums to the individual component become more important, so dual dimensioning. This of course for wire ended components, pre Surface mounts. Must have been difficult for the Australians on Metric Day.

But But But you have a right to instant gratification, the great god Amazon Prime says so, if not the next day, at times hours after ordered. I just expect things to ARRIVE. Sent some ME items to a mate in the Phillipines six years ago. Still not arrived and he died two years ago.

X 20 amplifiers, Surface Barrier transistors AND "Coming soon, a 2" home build TV set." Now that one took many years, a bent crt and an obscure battery pack ans wasn't home build. Surprised he didn't come up with a genuhine Snake Oil recipe.

Thread: To laser cut or to water cut
11/09/2021 09:25:12

You pays yer money and takes yer choice. May have changed but Waterjet was a bit more expensive. Again, may have changed but the holes would probably only be "spotted". Would imagine water is going to have a cleaner edge due to cold cutting.

Wonder when the Gates organisation are going to realise than the golden goose is getting close to expiring? Seems that when they get to achieving a reasonably stable platform we get a disruption with yet another O/S together with all the update saga. Now not only a new O/S but you need a new compuwker to run it. Sorry Bill, the goose tasted luverly and I converted its eggs to Britannias

Yet another ploy for garage repairs, added to the dashboard electronic "Watchdog" Wonder if when EVERY vehicle is electric, we will get "Wrong electrical cable insullation" warning.

Ahh, but what you're forgetting Gray is that most on this forum work to NASA standards and have limited time for what used to be a HOBBY. Also from an angled luddite.

Perhaps explaining the difference between the two would give the O/P a clue? As he doesn't have a photo posting that may be difficult.

Thread: Converting fractions to decimals

"Or log tables if you're some kind of luddite/weirdo/masochist."

I resemble that remark and only work to the "rough" sizes using four figure logs and not super accurate six figure versions, but I can convert ingrish to meterick without having to use t'nternet or Collosus and can still work to a "Proud" sixteenth or a "Shy" thirtysecond and it might not to be to NASA standards of accuracy but it works.

You didn't ask for fitting advise Mick, usually fitted using a cup and dome compression tool, thought you only needed diameter sizes. Silicon glue doesn't care whether a flange or not.

Yep Duncan, I remember using the hurdy gurdy for doing circlip design calcs and as far as logs were concerned, plenty of class 365s and 465s DMUs hurtlling about with stainless exzorsts.

Thread: Knurling tool

Bet the late Sir John is doing a few rotations, think it was on one of the American sites where he posted a photo of about a foot (Err 305mm - 30.5cm) long straight knurl that looked to the uninitiated like a straight cut fine pitch gear using a home cooked knurl milling tool.

"and most importantly wait till SWTSMBO has gone out"

WHY?

Bits tempered or "Blued" in domestic oven, usually on a Sunday AFTER roast done when oven is already hot (Yorkshire cost saving trait). Do you put greasy parts In? Can't think of ANY oven usage that would cause "Contamination" My bits are ALWAYS clean before loading. Do you wait before using the big cooling box?

Plenty of room on my Luddite Bench Ramon, I too know there's 25.4mm to the inch and don't find it too difficult to convert fractions. An ex technical director used to tear his hair out when I used LOG tables (Skool edition) to work out angles of bend and blend lengths on Loco exhaust systems despite his Tecky calk. Batteries NEVER run out on log tables. But just think, if you invested in a "Tormack" how much more sailing time you could enjoy by pressing a few buttons and letting the power of electrons generate some of your exotic engines? secret
