Thread: Adcock Shipley Bridgeport motor
29/01/2022 12:17:41

Years ago, rewound the stator coil on a Citroen alternator. This was vacuum impregnated with an epoxy resin after winding. This material was what was used to do transformers at the R&D labs for Decca R&T. not only to waterproof them but also to stop the windings 'Singing' in use.

When the first workshop machinery arrived from Taiwan many years ago, the first job after cleaning the sand from the castings (how times haven't changed since ROC took over) was to change the motors for Brit impregnated varieties. Insulation breakdown due to singing windings was a regular occurance.

Thread: Model Engine Castings Ident Boo Boo!
24/01/2022 09:48:35

To advertisers on the magic flee, ALL tooling is "Suitable for Mifford" and ALL steam engines and castings are "Stuart Turner" but pot luck if blind bidding at an auction.

Don't buy them from the big river, the ones from the bay are exactly the same -but cheaper.

Thread: What Did you do Today 2022

So, 26hrs after ordering, new drive arrived and yes Bob despite not requesting specifically, it is a pipeline version. Refitted and case closed within 5mins., reconnected and after it reformatted itself within a futher 10, up and running. I could get my old recordings back with a bit of faffing but, as stated on another thread, the regularity of repeats is just a waiting game.

Thread: Endless Repeats
18/01/2022 12:00:45

Not a political rant but if I remember, 24hr TV seemed to start in the days of Mrs Thatchers reign. Something to entertain the unemployed section of the great unwashed.

When installing Danish high end TVs my mantra was "You can pay £10,000 to watch 99 channels of cr*p or £200 and watch the same"

Plus of course TV Tax.

Are TV shops still obliged to inform the Beebs mafia you've capitulated and become a lemming?

Queens English disappeared when Lady Isobel Barnett and Silvia Peters etc. were retired. One the Beeb haven't repeated is "The Potters Wheel", essential viewing back in the day. Agree about the 10pm repeats on ITV3 though.

Thread: reversing a single phase motor
17/01/2022 10:13:59

How can a single phase AC motor be expected to run in reverse by changing over the mains input connections? Does the sine wave become anti phased?

Thread: Filing finish on castings.

Full size textile machinery, "Exhibition finish" cost far more than "standard finish", same paint but surface prep different. Customer decided how much they would be prepared to pay.

Thread: Replace Speaker Surrounds
15/01/2022 11:13:42

Gilberts concrete columns ahhhh fond memories. Essential basis was a spun concrete tube but where to get them? Was totally sold on them after a demo at RSC in Bradford but years later when joining Rank Leak Wharfedale could only find trade adverts for them or a brief description in a DIY Hi-Fi comic.

World of difference between Hi-Fi and Performance speakers, home use, quality sound is paramount, "Performance" speakers, LOUD IS KING.

Elons blue sky thinking driverless cars are great thinking, just don't go out in a snowstorm. Puts a whole new twist on fair weather motoring.

Isn't a high pressure water system or laser cutter essential for good results for these materials?

Thread: An unpleasant nocturnal experience.

No long rat tales (Tails), the O/Ps original picture would allow rats three abreast to march into the house. Saw a rat go into next doors wall via the inverted 'T' of the missing pointing. Gaps would be no more than 1/2" (12mm).

Bait for rat boxes, Chocolate spread laced with rat poison wrapped in polythene bag. The fact they have to chew through it proof you have them, but not for long.

Thread: Speed Camera Flashes?
06/01/2022 21:57:13

Sam, the obscured sign was 50MPH and if you knew the location of the bend, it would take a brave soul to try that speed with a small car containing four adults and two heavy suitcases. Light flashed at sixty four just as I passed it but despite a bright flash at the rear of the car (dark winter morning) didn't record the forty MPH I was travelling at to negotiate the RH bend.

Interestingly enough, if one managed to roll the car due to excessive speed at this location you would end in a grass ditch, travelling in the opposite NON camera'd direction you'd hit opposing traffic.
