Thread: 5 HP 3 phase motor
05/11/2016 15:35:30

Just to update you and thank you for all the advice.

I removed the rotor, took a rather large hammer to get it out,yes there was rust between the rotor and stator, I cleaned all this off.I tried the idea of connecting a battery charger to the windings but the charger got hotter than rhe windings, maybe I did not leave connected long enough. I found a piece of 6mm ally plate which was just the right width to replace the oven shelf and put the stator in for 6 hours at 50*. After it all cooled down I meggered it. .

After replacing the bearings I reassembled it and today connected it up and it runs perfectly.

So once again thanks for your help.

Thanks all for the advice..

I will take it apart , give every thing a good derusting & stick it in front of a fan heater to dry it out. ( I doubt I could lift it high enough to put in the oven smiley)

A mate has just dropped off a 5 HP 3 phase motor which has sat outside for several months, the gasket under the connection cover is damaged allowing water to enter the motor casing, the motor is seized solid. Before I waste my time stripping it down, what are your opinions on whether it's beyond help.

Thank You.

When I built my Wardon (now sold) I bored the block over size and fitted PTFE bushes of this type **LINK**

On a drill grinding machine I've recently built I used linear motion ball bearing slide bushes of this type :-**LINK**

with excellent results..

Good Morning,

Picked up a few bargains yesterday at the Stoke Prior steam rally.

A glanze & a Greenwood SRDCN 10x10 profile insert toolholders for £2 each..

Also two boxes of 10 Sandvik inserts for £8

DCMT 070202-UF P45 (M35)

DCMT 070204-UM P45 (M35)

I understand the style and size part of the code but just asking what material they are designed for turning..

I spent a couple of hours last night trying to understand the information on the Sandvik web site but I'm no wiser.

While I'm asking I have a box of PLANSEE DCMT 070204-EN inserts as well.

Thank You

Your making an excellent job there Damien. Have you managed to remove the chuck yet or are you waiting until it's all reassembled?

Thread: Tom Senior - E Type - pulley
28/08/2016 19:03:09

I think the E type mill uses the same S type head as on the light vertical mill . I've just had a look at mine & the there is approx 1mm of vertical travel on the pulley. Have you checked there's not a second grub screw under the one you have slackened ? May be when you try to remove the pulley it is catching on a burr made by the grub screw..

You could ask the same question on the "Tom Senior light vertical milling machine " post as Damian has his apart at the moment.

Z axis each increment .001". . 0-130 which takes a bit of getting used to

Just out of interest is your machine metric or imperial ? Mine is metric X & Y feed screws but the fine feed on the vertical head is imperial, which seems a little strange ! But as I have fitted a DRO and prefer to work in imperial it's not a problem.

26/08/2016 07:21:18

" but the MT2 seems to be stuck in?"

I had the same problem when I first got my machine. One bit of advice I received was to have the fine feed disengaged to prevent damage. I did the same as you & applied WD 40 over night the following morning I was expecting to struggle but a quite heavy belt with the copper end of a small Thor hammer released it.

Even now it sometimes requires a heavy belt to release it.
