Thread: Abwood machine vise screw |
02/11/2018 17:19:13 |
Just an update. Kingston engineering show the standard length is 5 feet but when I inquired they replied they could supply 6" for £7.50 + £10 p & p + VAT. But then following Clive's comment I thought yes I have a lathe, milling machine & Google so after a bit of research on the internet and a practice on aluminum I produced a new screw which I'm very happy with.

Aah, I never thought of that ! No it will not do the job. Will have to have a rethink. Thanks for that info Mike.

This PM I managed to break the screw on my Abwood milling machine vise (it sheared where the roll pin goes threw) . Measuring the thread it's 5/8" x 8 tpi acme. So has any one got an old ML7 lead screw (5/8" x 8 tpi acme.) if it's warn that's OK as I only need approx 10". Thank you Ian |

Jason. Thanks for your prompt reply and help (again) If you could look up 1st May 1963 page 16 it would be greatly appreciated |

Early this year I bought a part completed Wyvern engine and I have now got around to finishing it off.It came with a set of plans and the Westbury ME construction articles apart from 1st May 1963 page 16, can anyone help with this missing page? I have the ME magazines with Peter Rawlinson's build articles in which he mentions a letter in ME 3300 1st July 1966 which he recommends reading, can any one help with this as well? In John Purdy's list of drawing errors he says the timing drawing should be revered to give CCW rotation, is this the normal direction as I have seen videos showing CCW and CW rotation? Also I cannot see on the drawings any details of the cam shaft? Thank you Ian Edited By ian j on 29/07/2018 19:35:47 |

Adam. I was in a similar situation when I bought my TS light vertical. I removed the complete motor/vertical head, the table, and saddle. To remove the knee loosen the gib adjusting bolts ( 3) and remove the three bolts on the left hand side of the knee and this allows the gib block ( which is the LH dovetail )to drop out, remove the three bolts holding the knee feed screw to the tray/base and then the knee can be removed by moving to the right to clear the dovetail and lifting up for the feed screw to clear the tray/base.. I think I propped up the knee with blocks of wood while doing this. This is all from memory as it was several years ago, but to be honest with you once your are in front of the machine it becomes clearer.Just a warning all the parts are a two man lift to do it safely |

Yes I agree for just a few pounds that is the best option, but China is shut down for their new year I'm sure you could get replacement parts direct from JYE where ever they are!
PS just to make you feel better I soldered the 4 pin header to the wrong side of the main board and that was after trying it in the correct side! Managed to get it out though. Edited By ian j on 12/02/2018 16:14:09 |

Neil. "I've 3D printed a holder for it, with a Lion battery, a 5V USB charger board, switch and a buck regulator board for 12V." Do you have a link to these parts you bought? |

Long shot probably but .... Although I've been building this sort of thing since a teenager I made a classic cods-up of one part of this .... the usual reason - not paying attention. I soldered in the rotary encoder board flipped over. Realised it straight away and tried to remove it. Unfortunately there are 4 pins from a header to release simultaneously, with very small pads around them and I stripped some pads including the vias. My best bet now, I think, is to run jumpers from the encoder board direct to the header pins. Trouble is I can only see the traces on the side of the encoder board opposite to the encoder - not those on the encoder side. If anyone has the kit not yet assembled would they mind checking where the traces (if any) run on the encoder side and letting me know? (I said it was a long shot).
Hi. I've just built one of these, can not help you with the PCB tracks. But if you go to here :-
This guy mounted his encoder directly on the main board ::- "Another (easier) idea to modify the encoder installation I had after doing that was to put aside the mini-pcb and bend all the encoder pins towards its front face, so it could be soldered directly to the main board (also would require cutting the spindle and both screw pods flush with the mainboard). This would have been easier (and leave more free space) if done from the beginning, but more complex once the encoder was soldered to the mini-pcb."

New crank shaft, piston rod, valve rod, slide valve, exhaust and flange and piston rings. Painted satin mid Brunswick green. It runs on compressed air quite well but it's got a knock which I'm pretty sure is coming from wear between the cross head and the bottom of the vertical columns.
Here is a link to a short video of it running on air;-

Just an update. I decided to bite the bullet and buy the vial swarf mostly bought from Level Developments, but when I contacted them that item was not in stock and there was no plans to produce any in the near future. So a bit more research and I think one for a Starrett level will be suitable, but not stocked by the UK branch so it's on it's way from the US (3-4 weeks !) |
