Thread: Myford Lathe service

Tony.
Yes Darren scraped the rear shear towards the tail stock end to allow the saddle to be adjusted to give free travel the length of the bed.

Hi Len.

It took approx ,4hrs ( and 3 cups of tea as they worked) Darren will give a price via email as it depends on travelling distance from the Nottingham area.

After seeing the ad in Model Engineer iss.4414 for Myford Lathes rebuild & service's by Darren Boden ( ex Myford fitter, 34 years experience ) and Pete from the spares counter, I contacted Darren to discuss a home visit to service my 1979 ML7RB lathe.Darren informed me the service consisted of " NEW BELTS, WIPER, WICK, BARREL KEY CHECK CONDITION OF HEADSTOCK SCRAPE IF REQUIRED CHECK ACROSS PLATE,READJUST EVERYTHING TO MYFORD SETTINGS"
After agreeing a date & time they turned up promptly & after a cup of tea ( of course ) & a friendly chat they set about the work required on my lathe. After the service I now have a lathe which is as good as the original Myford settings ( saddle now now travels full length of bed with no tight spots ) at a fraction of what Myfords's use to charge.
I am just a very satisfied customer of Darren & Pete and wish them well in the future.
Darren can be contacted at :[email protected]

Thread: Shand Mason Fire Engine.

Hi John.
Thanks for your kind offer but I have already built the wheels & nearly completed the chassis I already have the plans & ME articles. If I had not got this far I would have been interested.

Hi Jason.
Thanks for that. As you suggested when I copied the article I stopped at page 570, never noticed 571 because of the free plans in between.

Hi.
I'm considering building the Shand Mason Fire Engine. Reading the ME articles ,which started in May 2009 , on page 570 under the construction heading it states that the general arrangement is shown in fig 1, 2 & 3 but these do not appear to be included in the article ( fig 4 appears in the june issue) Were they included in a later issue?

Thread: HSS tool inserts
14/01/2011 10:39:58
Hi.
I decided to buy from A.R.Warner in the US. 10 cost £40, which included shipping & commision on my credit card, which i thought was reassonable. Unfortunatelythey went through UK Border Agency & I had to pay VAT!!
Tried one yesterday  on brass.MS & ally & was very impressed. I like the idea of just rubbing on an oil stone to sharpen them.

Hi.
I came across this video on youtube:-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKGkkGFsF50
Where the guy in the US is using HSS tool inserts instead of carbide.
I have several SCLC(R & L) lathe tool & boring bar holders which use the CCMT 060202 carbide inserts.I would like to try HSS inserts, does any one know of a UK supplier of HSS inserts which are suitable for the SCLR holders?

Thread: Digital Rev-counter
07/12/2010 08:20:57
Hi Owen.
I'v just built this rev counter.I had a problem which turned out I had the collector & emitter of the optotransister reversed, when I corrected this all worked o/k.I contacted Mike Crossfield who sent me this explaination of how the circuit works:-

"With everything correctly connected, and the opto slot clear, the optotransistor will be switched on by the illumination from the LED, and its collector (pin 3 on the opto switch) will be near to 0V. This will turn TR1 hard on, and its base will be at around 4.3V.  The collector of TR1 will be just below 5V.

When the slot in the opto switch is blocked, the optotransistor will be turned off.  The collector of the optotransistor will be pulled up to 5V by the 2k2 resistor.  TR1 will be switched off, and its base will also be at 5V.  The collector of TR1 will be pulled down to 0V by the 3k3 resistor.

Tr1 collector is connected to the input of the digital frequency meter (pin 6) via a 470nF capacitor. Pin 6 is also connected to 0V by a 2k2 resistor. As explained in the article, this arrangement makes sure that the display returns to 0000 when the machine spindle stops. However, because dc voltages are blocked by the capacitor, it also means that you will not get meaningful measurements with a voltmeter at pin 6 during static testing."

With a scope on the o/p pin I get a nice 2.5v amplitude square wave.If you have the same LED display I have the connections are different to those in Mikes article. Looking at the LED display with the pins at the bottom, from left to right::-

   pin 1 & 2 no connection, pin 3 +5v. pin 4 -5v (0v) from power supply, pin 5 no connection & pin 6 i/p. Hope this helps.

Thread: 3 1/2" gauge Rob Roy
20/07/2009 08:02:59
Hi.Can any one who is building or built a 3 1/2" gauge Rob Roy confirm that when the boiler is fixed in position  the bottom of the boiler barrel is 5/16" above the mainframes ( ie 1 15/16" from centre of boiler as shown on the drawings minus half the diameter of the boiler ,1 5/8" ) As the bottom edges of the boiler wrapper sits on the horns preventing this measurement by 1/16".Also how do you secure the smoke box to the saddle when using the hollow casting. Regards Ian
