Thread: Casting aluminium without a furnace? |

Steve, that sounds like Precious Metal Clay from Mitsubishi which I think is only available in Silver and Gold. A competing product, Art Clay, does exist in Copper and Bronze forms. Andy |
Thread: Stretching a Wedding Ring |

Only just seen this question and it is what I do ! Yes anneal, as described by John above, your usual flux will do fine. A good rule of thumb is to anneal for every two sizes growth of the ring, a UK size is roughly 1mm on circumference. You should be able to take a plain 9k band up several sizes with a slow tapered mandrel and a rubber or nylon or hide hammer, since you don't need the whole range of sizes on the mandrel turning one becomes quick and easy, I have made several for specific jobs. If it is a wide band, say 6mm or above, then keep reversing it on the mandrel so both sides end up the same size. I like to do this job in front of the customer and dispel the myth that what jewellers do is difficult and therefore expensive.

Thread: Rob Roy 3 1/2" gauge tank locomotive - anybody built one? |
10/06/2012 10:57:23 |
One list of errors here and another wordier one here both cover the relevant gotcha. Andy |
26/05/2012 23:05:53 |
I am building one as a first loco, runs on air ! If that is the error that means the valve rods don't line uo with the gear then snap - cranked adapters on the end of the valve rods solved mine. There is a thread covering a working gas fired Rob Roy here |
Thread: Motor Control |

Neil, My little electric has a rotary pot for speed, DPDT switch on the loco for forward/reverse, I find the pot is really a two handed job so not ideal, it also means the youngest driver can throw the switch at full speed for some dramatic effects! Our club loco has a sprung lever throttle which is very nice to drive and if you drop the controller the loco stops! Loco looking excellent btw. Andy |

Spot on David, Thank you Andy |

It is on mine David, ie8 on XP sp3 so nothing unusual. I suspect the dodgy software is reserving width for the full size of the first image. Andy |
Thread: Broken tap removal |

What Ian said.... but 2 minutes on Google came up with :- Anglia Precision, Peterborough, 01733 703230 Rivercircle, Peterborough, 01733 315101 Qualitetch, March, 01354 658787
Personally, I built one, but thats probably because somebody said I couldn't, or it might have been shouldn't Andy |
Thread: Looking for a small milling machine - Sieg Super X1L Good choice ? |
21/03/2012 21:10:20 |
I use the Chester version of this mill with the Arc Euro long table added - best move I made. I must echo all Mike's comments, I promise I will do some of his mods, probably locking screws first. I have done all the milling for a Rob Roy on it as well as numerous tooling projects, not broken a gear yet but then I don't try and take big cuts. I like it so much I bought it a full set of er25 collets and collet chuck for Christmas. As with all machines, mills especially, expect to spend the same again on (absolutely essential) extras. Thread: whats wrong with my thread/screwcutting |
13/03/2012 11:03:30 |
The first photo looks like a square thread to me, a white background would help a lot, if you offer your cutting tool up to the original thread does it fit well? Andy |

Thread: Making retaining pins |

Dem's em Jason, well done, Silver Cross pram - made in China
![]() I don't think those, my butterfly clutch, or any of the circlips would provide a positive pressure along the pin though, merely resist pushing off by which time the contact may be broken ?
Andy |
07/02/2012 17:47:23 |
James,
Sounds like a jewellers butterfly clutch as used on lapel pins etc. I haven't seen them in a size that would fit a 6ba stud though, more like 2mm maximum. Ggogle will show you pictures.
There are stamped steel "washers" with 2 or more inward facing teeth, seem to remember them holding the wheels on my grand daughters toy pram at Christmas, haven't the faintest idea of the proper name for them though, sorry.

My Juliet drawings show 12 1/4" by 3 1/2" OD so could be, backhead arrangement is about right once the stays go back in, 9 off 3/8" flues and 2 off 3/4" superheater flues ?

Thread: Manky External Threads |
26/01/2012 13:15:07 |
It's as though the thread is being destroyed by the rest of the die, which has had little use and looks fine? Alan,
I have an ME die that does exactly the same, works fine t'other way round though, ie with the face of the die without any markings on it presented to the job - worth a try?
Cheers

Thread: Silver Soldering |
07/01/2012 11:09:15 |
Wolfie, If you grip pieces in the vice to solder them the vice will act as a heatsink and draw heat away from the job. Far better to prop or pin (dressmaking pins work) the job to a lump of refractory brick to stop them moving around if there isn't a good mechanical joint.
I have always known the little pieces of solder as pallions and if you place them wet and heat the job slowly so the flux dries rather than boils they won't all jump off.
A practice piece is a very good idea just to get a feel for how much heat is required and what the flux looks like when the job is hot enough.
Maurice has a good point, plastic bottles of flux do not respond well to an oxy/propane flame in my experience

Ed,
You get a small number of minutes to edit the post, after that it is cast in stone.
I know, I didn't write it, and I wouldn't admit it if I had.
Cheers,
Andy |
