Thread: Digital Archives - Manna from Heaven?
21/12/2009 21:37:45
Chris,
An index to Model Engineers Workshop has been compiled by Colin Usher, and can be found at http://www.colinusher.info/Indexes/mewindex.html  and because its an excel file, its searchable making life a lot easier.
Regards,
Dave

I have the same trouble with issue 16, although all the rest work fine for me.

Just to join the party, I have also subsribed but am unable to access the back issues, even though I have updated my subscription number on my profile.
Thread: Citric acid as pickle
11/12/2009 09:29:51
i bought some citric acid for a few £'s for ebay, I was recommended by another model engineer to use a few tablespoons in a bucket of water.  This has worked fine for me.
Thread: where can i buy a bell punch?
02/11/2009 01:20:03
Evening all,
I was wondering if anyone could help, I am after a bell punch (Im pretty sure thats what they are called) as used for centre marking the end of a cylinder.  I cant seem to find any through my usual tool suppliers, I was wondering if anyone knew where I could purchase one.

If anyone is interested Leeds public library has volume 1 - 100 in the reference section.  The downside is that you cant take them out, but they do let you photocopy.  (And you dont have to be a member).
Thread: Digital editions of Model Engineer and Model Engineers' Workshop.
26/09/2009 19:15:18
Following on from the who would be interested in digital copies discussion... I would be, if nothing else because of the saving on shelf space! would it be possible to try a few trial runs, such as 10 years worth of ME on a dvd for a set price say £20 off the top of my head.
It just seems that a full set would be useful to a minority whereas 10 years worth would appeal to a wider audience (the early editions to those interested in old tools and methods, early 20th century for those who like the electrical models, 2000's for those interested in CNC. etc...)
Thread: Tender materials
15/09/2009 19:38:19
just a quick question.  Due to the cost of brass, I was thinking about making a tender body from steel (then painted inside and out) is there any reason why I should not do this?  (i.e. will it eventually rust)
Thread: Northumbrian Riveting
27/08/2009 17:26:12
Steve,
I have always used round head rivets the second way you described.  I find round head rivets a lot easier to get from suppliers.  If the rivet it slightly too long when you put it through the hole, when you hammer it you wont damage the frames (but you will have a bit extra to file off).
I would however add that I am a self taught amateur so as to the pros and cons of the two systems i couldnt help you im afraid.

Thread: Lathe for Beginner
23/08/2009 20:30:39
I started out with a unimat 3, and they are excellent little lathes.  The problem is that they are now becomming regarded as collectable and as such parts can be a bit pricey.  I would recommend having a look at the website www.lathes.co.uk which has feedback on most types of lathe.
The main problem I had with the unimat is that it has small centre height, but i suppose it depends what type of model your interested in making as to whether thats a problem.
The arceurotrade sieg lathes are good value for money but they require a bit of fiddling with to get them set up properly.
I would also recommend getting the mini lathe book from the workshop practice series if your thinking about getting a 3 1/2" centre height chinese lathe.
Thread: errors in drawings
23/08/2009 17:52:49
would it be possible to create a section of the forum for people to list errors and omissions in drawings for ME articles and models.  I know of several websites and forums that have different ones listed, but it would make things a bit simpler if they were all listed in one place.

Thread: citric acid for pickling
19/08/2009 11:13:40
Thanks, I will order some and give it a try.
19/08/2009 00:02:59
I have been reading around, and I have seen that citric acid can be used for pickling silver soldered parts.  Does anyone know what the recommended concentration is? the citric acid I have been looking at is 100% pure E330 citric acid (the same stuff used for home brewing).
Thread: Subscribers only
15/08/2009 20:53:39
If your "logged in" i.e. you can make posts on the forum, then at the top left hand side of the screen, is a small red box thats says "My account", with a few blue links inside.  If you click on the one that says back issues it will take you to a new page which has the covers of the back issues, simply click on the one you want and it will load up (fingers crossed!!).

i see the back issues for MEW have been put on (i only subscribe to MEW btw).  I have been thinking about subscribing to ME as well, but I was wondering, what ME back issues are (are going to be put online?) or more to the point, how far back will they go?
regards,
Dave
P.S putting back issues online is a stroke on genius, I was running out of space for the bound issues!
Thread: Clarke milling attachment
11/08/2009 13:46:24
Morning all,
After reading the latest ME I see that the next issue contains an article on fitting a clarke milling attachment to a drummond lathe.  This is the second article in the last few months about fitting a clarke milling attachment (please dont think im complaining in anyway!!), but I was just wondering...  As the prices for the clarke milling attachment and the Sieg X1 mill are around about in the same ball park, why would you choose the milling attachment over a stand alone machine (ignoring the obvious space advantage).  As im still new to ME I was just wondering what the advantages of a lathe/mill were over a stand alone mill.

I have also made a stuart 10V using just a unimat 3, and a pillar drill. I didnt come across many problems if i remember correctly.  There is a book called BUILDING A VERTICAL STEAM ENGINE FROM CASTINGS, which can be found on a well known book website (i dont think im allowed to mention any names!) but put it into google and it will find you some results for around £7.  The only part I had problems machining was the base, so I did it by hand using a file and it turned out just fine.  I think if I remember correctly.  I also remember reading somewhere that someone made one using just hand tools, so it can be done!.

***** I have removed a link from this posting ***** The website mentioned has plans scanned from a book, and therefore copyright cannot be proven or ascertained.

http://homepage3.nifty.com/amigos/index-e.html a website with mods and simple tools made on a mini lathe similar to the C3 sold by arc eurotrade.
