Thread: Indexable threading tool tips
05/11/2022 17:55:48

Many thanks for all of you replies. I now understand the different tips. APT looks like a very good source for the different tips.

Today for an experiment I cut a 1" x 32tpi External thread with a 55' insert tip. The result was excellent. I then attempted cut the same size thread using the internal tool and tip, The result was OK but the fit to the external thread was slightly "slack" I estimated the tapping size bore for internal thread. Is there calculation to find the correct tapping size bore ?

Hi All,

I would like to understand the tool tips that are required to cut external threads on the lathe. If want to cut different size and different TPI Whitworth threads do I need to purchase a different tip for different sizes / TPIs ?

Looking at the likes of RDG etc it's not very clear what is required

Thread: Rolling a 5" gauge copper boiler barrel
28/03/2022 18:41:25

After phoning numerous engineering companies, non of which were remotely interested in doing the work. I have two choices.

Buy flat 3mm sheet and form it round a 4" tube.

Buy 5" diameter 10 SWG tube a cut the relevant triangle out to form the the 4.5" diameter smoke box end.

Sheet is cheaper but tube may be easier.. What the thoughts of the experts ?

Looking to roll a 5" gauge copper boiler !/8" thick copper plate. What rollers would be suitable ? There load of rollers on the Bay. but they only go up to 1.2 mm thickness

Thread: Cast iron properties

I need to carry out a repair on my Boxford shaping machine vice. The original has a two small sections of the movable jaws fractured off. I intent do fabricate the whole movable jaw, which will require new dove tails to be machined.

A length of 60mm square cast iron would be the starting point but I'm unsure which grade to purchase M-Machine do GR17 and SG. Which grade be more suitable ?

Thread: Harrison 250
12/01/2022 14:07:27

Thanks for the replies. I'm torn between keeping my Boxford ME10 and getting a slightly bigger lathe. As stated my workshop is in my back garden. Between the gravel drive there is a gravel path and an 18" retaining wall to negotiate. When I put my Tom Senior milling machines and my laths into the workshop I stripped them down to smaller "lumps" me and her in doors managed it with a few cross words. The problem with a Harrison 250 is that it's probably 3 times the weight of the Bpxford and the Myford..

Gavel paths and drives are fine unless you want to shift heavy objects.

Has anybody moved a Harrison 250 if so. Would removing the lathe from the makers stand be a problem to ease the lifting and moving. My workshop in my garden so lifting the entire lathe from the drive would be rather difficult.

Thanks Peter

Thanks Gav, looking to swap my ME10 for a good x10. What would be a reasonable price for a good X10 ?

Has anybody got the foot print dimensions of the Boxford X10 lathes ? loads of of info on lathes.uk but I cannot see physical dimensions.

Thanks Peter

Michael the kit looks suitable for lathe only work, enjoy your lathe when it arrives.

02/01/2022 13:26:36

Michael you can mill using a lathe if you can get a suitable vertical slide. What size steam engine are you considering ? One of the smaller Stuart engines would be a good starting point.

Thread: Slightly large lathe
01/01/2022 21:50:03

Are these gearhead versions much heavier than an ME 10. As my workshop is in my garden so my lathes and milling machines all needed to be stripped down to move the "lumps" from the drive to the workshop.

31/12/2021 15:22:21

In my workshop I have a Myford S7 and a Boxford ME10. As they are very similar in size, I'm considering going for a slightly larger lathe. One of the more modern Boxford STS gearhead lathes looks a good size option. Had anybody got experience with STS range or suggest a suitable replacement for the ME10

Thread: Minimum bending radius

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply, My 5" gauge Don Young BR Standard 2 has 1" OD Super heater flue tubes. The super heater tubes are 7/32 OD. Looking at min radius of the tubes I will have to go for silver soldered copper or stainless steel spear head super heaters.. I have never silver soldered Stainless steel but using the correct flux should not be a problem. I have a Mig welder but would not be confident welding them.
