Thread: Elliot progress 2gs drill oil
26/10/2022 12:50:00

Hi, I made the site glass using a bit of clear plastic from cheap plastic storage box. Just marked the diameter and cut it out with a pair of scissors

26/10/2022 11:40:46

Hi, still need some help. Today I took a look a look at the oil in the drill, only to find that there was none. So as the site glass looked like there was oil in the drill, I removed same and remade a new glass. However I have now two problems. The first is what oil should I use, and second where’s the oil filler. If anyone knows can they please let me know. Thanks

Thread: Progress 2g drill problem
25/10/2022 21:02:03

Thanks again for your help. The problem was heavy rusting on the column inside the head. I poured wd40 and a bit of diesel onto the column from the top 4 times a day. It took 2 full days to free it off. The drill came from a workshop of a chap who had passed and had not been used for three years. I am getting on a bit, and wonder what will happen why I get to that stage. Anyway thanks again.

24/10/2022 14:50:49

Hi chaps. I have one more problem with my drill. I can’t rise the head. I have undone the screw fitting too the rear of the column. And a bolt on one side of the head that looks like it could be a lock for the head. However taking the weight of the head with a jack, I still cannot get the head to move on the column. My feeling is that there must be a further lock, but for the life of me I can’t see it. Can anyone please help. Thanks

Thread: Progress number one drill
24/10/2022 13:12:03

Thanks for the information chaps. I found the problem was that a past owner had rebuild the plate that locks the gear selection lever. However for some reason he had made it badly with a fixing screw head in one of the indents. This was allowing the ball to jump out of the much shallower indent. I have remade the plate and all is well now. Thanks again.

Hi, my progress drill has started to jump out of gear, and it’s becoming a bit of a pain. Has anyone owned or worked on a progress drill and been able to stop it jumping out of gear. If so can they please let me know know how they did it. Thanks.

My wife can work into her late 70,s within the NHS. She is a radiologist and as the powers that be within the NHS have closed most of the training pathways there is a massive shortage of skilled workers in her area. So we may get to the point in this country where the medical staff are older and more clapped out then the patients

Thread: Solidworks 3d experience
03/10/2022 18:37:14

Hi. Solidworks does sort of lock you in. I did have a 2020 copy of the program until a windows update stopped it working. I had to fall back on an old 2016 copy. I was hoping that the 3d experience would allow me to produce the g code which up to now I have used fusion 360 for. However I just can’t get my head around the way 3d experience deals with g-code. I think I will keep using fusion 360 to produce the g-code until they put a stop to hobby use completely.

03/10/2022 17:27:22

Hi. I have been along time user of solidworks and was interested to see that the company have started a new 3D cad design program called 3d experience. This is cloud based and you can pay for one years use or monthly. I have downloaded the program and apart from a cut down version of the original solidworks program and a odd sort of cam set up I am not sure I like it. Has anyone played around with us program at all. I am not a great fan of cloud based programs has the prices will just go up big time once a number of people are hocked. What is your view on this.

Thread: Whitworth's Octagonal Sniper rifle

Posted by Andrew Tinsley on 20/09/2022 16:48:26:

I doubt very much if the quoted accuracy is correct. A good modern full bore rifle would be unable to match those sorts of figures, let alone a crude mid 19th centuary rifle.

Andrew.

N.B. I am referring to the types of full bore rifle available to shooters in this country. I have no idea what state of the art military rifles are like. Full bore supersonic ammunition is very susceptible to cross winds, which makes it all academic.

A baker rifle could obtain very good accuracy with a good marksman. The 95th rifles during the Napoleonic wars had marksmanship competitions most months. A good modern rile can beat the figures given with ease. And I am a ex army sniper.

Thread: Electric roller garage door
18/09/2022 18:35:23

Thanks chaps. The £4000 is for a carador with all the bells and whistles. You need to get it fitted or they will not honour the warranty. I agree it’s an awful lot of money for a garage door. Apart from carador who I know use all English made items, I think that the rest use Chinese bits and bobs to max out profits. Due to having an office build into the Centre section of the garage roof which means I can’t fit an up and over which would work out a lot cheaper for sure. I have asked a number of National firms for quotes in the coming week, so will take it from there. Thanks

17/09/2022 13:54:17

Hi, my old garage wooden doors are rotted out and need replacement. I have been looking at electric roller doors and have a few questions. I know that carador are good quality and they are only down the road from me. But nearly £4000 for a single door is a bit much. I have seen doors for sale on eBay and Facebook, but think that these are of Chinese origin and any warranty would be worthless if called on. So can anyone point me in the direction of a good quality insulated door for a single garage which they had fitted and they are happy with. Thanks.

Thread: MOT - am I being taken for a ride?
15/09/2022 21:37:42

The biggest problem with modern cars is the electrical system. Due to car manufacturers using the cambus system which links many of the cars electrical systems together a single fault in a cars radio can lead to all sorts of problems. Add on to the fact that car manufacturers no longer use good quality copper wire and one can see that a car with all todays bells and whistles is a big repair bill in the waiting. My new BMW had so many electrical faults I ended up getting my money back from the dealer. I know that this is no help too the OP. But the only path open to him is to get someone to check for any fault codes that the car my be showing.

Rotation should be counter clockwise

It is a little problematic to make such a definitive statement without knowing more details of the machine.

What you can say is that the direction of rotation should be such that the cutting forces tend to tighten rather than to loosen the nut on the arbor. Your statement presupposes a right hand thread nut on the arbor, which is not a given.

Once the direction of rotation is known, clearly the cutting tool should be mounted on the arbor so its cutting edges are presented to the work when rotating in that direction.

One thing that has not yet been covered in above replies is climb cutting vs. conventional cutting (ie. direction of feed relative to cutter rotation).
one has to start someplace. Most cutters that I have seen and used have been for CCW use. I also took it that the original OP was not a complete ass. Unlike some

Thread: Flintlock pistol, rifle.
13/09/2022 12:02:31

Back in the flintlock period, the military used paper cartridges which carried the correct amount of power and the musket or pistol ball. The firer had to bite the end off the cartridge off pour the power into the barrel and then the wrapper and the ball before ramping the whole lot down with the ram rod. Misfires due to the fine remains of cartridge paper did happen but very unlikely due to the slow rates of fire and the fact that the paper part of the cartridge was blown out of the barrel along with the ball. Has stated cannons used cloth and even tin containers to hold small shot and the power was in cloth bags. However the reason for washing the cannons out was mainly down to the greater risk of the cannon misfiring due to the build up of heat within the barrel which could set off the powder.

Thread: Trouble with Horizontal Mill...Very much a beginner
12/09/2022 18:06:49

Hi, there are a number of reasons that you can’t get a good cut. First some steel is almost impossible to machine due to its hardness. I purchased some mild steel rod off eBay and no way could I machine that material no matter what lathe tool, speed depth of cut. Nothing would work in my arsenal of tools. Try cutting your material with an hacksaw and see how it cuts. If it cuts ok then you need to look at the machines set up. You say that you have tried all the speeds and feeds. Rotation should be counter clockwise, check that your cutter is correct for this. Start by using shallow cuts, try using cutting fluid. From what I can make out from the lower picture it looks like your cutter is digging in, so rotation is wrong. Feed the work left to right. Hope it helps a bit

Fizzy,

These are the pumps that I am referring to that are used in caravans and RV's. Available with pressures of 130 and 160 PSI.

12v pump copy.jpg

That’s the sort of pump I have in my tender under the water tank. Works very well. And I am in the U.K.

04/09/2022 08:00:16

I have an electric pump in the tender of my Columbia. It works off a small 12v battery and the working pressure is 140psi. I purchased it off eBay. The pump sits under the water tank in the tinder and the battery just behind the tank. Works very well.

Thread: Problems with mach3 turn
26/08/2022 11:09:52

Hi Martin. A few updates. First mistake was following a video on calibration of lathe on utube. It was the completely wrong way to go. Have then read and reread the mach3 manual and the replies on this site I did the maths. And also input the g code into mack3 correctly. This sorted the motor speed problem out. However it also showed why the z axis was not moving a smaller distance. The original belt pulley had a fair bit of wear on it allowing to much movement of the pulley before engagement of the teeth. So I am now waiting for a new pulley to turn up and with luck this will sort it all out.
