Thread: Finally got a proper lathe

That looks really nice.

Hope that bit has a good range of accessories with it.

A lot of what messers Sparey and Bradlkey wrote was ML7 based, so a lot will read across ontom the ML10.

ENJOY!

Howard

Hi Howard

Yes quite a few accessories but no collets or collet chuck.

Do not use the switch shown as an on - off switch. It only designed for reversing the lathe while the lathe is stopped.

Roy

So where is the on/off switch?

10/02/2023 16:58:06

Well after using my 17/70 Pultra for a while I was finding the maximum through bore of 8mm a bit restricted so I have finally bit the bullet and purchased a Myford ML10 , I can’t go any bigger because of space limitations, collecting it tomorrow touch wood it will fit in my B Class, couldn’t pass at the price,as I have mostly used a graver in the past and never turned threads it’s going to be another big learning curve but that’s good for the brain cells when we get old.

Thread: Multifix
10/02/2023 08:56:55

I have the smallest Multifix from PeWe tools on my Pultra and I am very happy with it , I did a bit of research before buying and went to them because they said they are made from the original tooling, ( how true that is I can’t say) but I am happy with it.

There is a very tidy WM16 for sale in western super mare on gumtree that seems a very good price £800

Thread: Mini Lathe vs. Watchmakers Lathe
31/01/2023 12:23:46

I was going to suggest a Sherline I know it’s American but there is a company in the uk that sells everything from Sherline and all accessories are easily available, I see there is one for sale in the classifieds on here.

I know I only repair antique clocks but if I hadn’t found the Pultra I would’ve purchased a Sherline.

Thread: Please help
16/01/2023 17:12:05

JasonB

i had to have it at that angle otherwise it didn’t clear the live centre when turning down the end where the square is , also I moved the fixed steady near to where I was trying to cut .

thanks for replies, as I said it’s not something I will need to do very often, the next time I need to do something similar I will try the advice.

most of my work is with a graver IE making small screws, arbors, and other clock related parts.

many thanks Dell

Here is a picture of my setup but please bear in mind that I have set it up with the finished product, as I turned it down prior to milling the square, the first picture is the HSS bits I used and the carbide were the same pattern.

Thanks for the replies

I have both indexable HSS and carbide I can’t remember what the designation is but they are both this pattern

with glanze holders, I have checked and adjusted the gibs, used a lubricant , haven’t rechecked if bit on centre as it was previously but will check also will try slowing feed down although I thought I was doing it slowly.

Thread: Please help

Well I have made a couple of lathe chuck keys for my Pultra four jaw chuck out of HT socket head cap bolts and happy with the finished product, my problem was or is that I started off using the crosslide but the finish was rubbish ( more like a super fine thread than a smooth finish) I tried using indexable carbide and HSS steel but no better, tried altering speed up and down, I ended up using the hand graver as I got a much better finish , I know I only have a small Pultra instrument lathe but I should be able to get a decent finish I must admit I very rarely use the crosslide because most of what I make for antique clocks is small and I much prefer using the graver, what am I doing wrong?

Thread: Drilling straight
09/11/2022 19:05:25

I drill down to 0.3mm and although it’s a pain I always drill brass with a doctored drill for brass because when it bites it can pull the drill bit to the side it bites, I have a separate set for brass.

My understanding is the early Pultra had solid thrusts and later ones had ball thrusts.

Dell

Thanks Dell. Just to clarify, you are referring to the early 17-series? I know the "P" type all had solid thrusts.

Dave

Yes 17/50 17/70 not sure about the 15 series though also don’t know when the change happened, my Pultra is post WW2 and it has ball bearing thrust.

Managed to get hold of some original wick, what a fiddly job to fit without pinching or cutting it when fitting the bushes but got there in the end and I know it’s not jammed because I could slide the wick either way before I cut it.

Well headstock all stripped out and Sod’s law the wicks were fine but new going in anyway because there is no way I could get the old wicks back in, also very negligible wear on bearings or spindle, just waiting for new wick to arrive.

That’s a handy link Michael but why would felt be better than cotton braid?

A friend that has done his 17/50 has some left so he is sending me some , it looks like candle wick.

many thanks for all the replies and helpful links.
