I think most of your questions have been answered , If you have good continuity from your plug top to all points that you tried on your Lathe this all sounds fine, PAT is another question as I do not consider a lathe is portable because you do not keep moving same around . A seperate earth will probably need to be a stake of 3ft or 5ft and need 6mm cable together with a earth leakage trip to work correctly this i do not think you need . The supply to your workshop is possibly a question I do not know what you have. Most portable appliances are now battery powered and double insulated.

Good Luck.

Thread: Faircut Lathe Advice

I have a Junior model that i bought from the widow of a retired bank manager who used to build petrol model racing cars and engines this came with a considerable amount of extras including model engine books and tools together with 4 jaw chuck and faceplate which has 6" chuck that fits. This I bought in 1976.When I set it up I had a friend who was a retired engineer who checked it over for me who had heard about the owner which let us to belief that he was the original owner. Over the years i have often looked for parts etc without success . I did fit a 4" 3 Jaw chuck and had a faceplate made for same by a friend as a favor for a favor. My only regret is I never had time to make anything because I was self employed and afraid work came first. They were well made and seem to still be around how many still exist in working order the figure is unknown....I did find someone locally to me who had rebuilt one but was unable to contact. The price does seem a little on the high side it really depends what you want to do and whether you want to rebuilt and make your own bits.

Try any penetrating oil around the joint between the pulley and shaft even when hot this sometimes works . Worth second look as suggested look around the pulley for a Allen screw buried into the shaft and lost underneath the paint

Thread: Boxford electrical problem

A common fault two much grease pumped in which has now jammed the centrifugal switch have seen this problem many times , I think you have now got to strip and clean your motor looks like you my have over greased your motor

Big question is the motor 3phase or single phase . My guess is single phase if so a very common problem the centrifugal switch has stuck . does happen if the motor has been used for some time . does the motor run on its own if everything else has been disconnected IE the drive belts . More info may provide the right answer from someone.

Thread: Pipe bending
14/02/2021 11:59:21

What happen to the wood block with a hole in for bending conduit , never did get the hang of it , Copper pipe with either a internal spring or external spring was a lot better to work with . The bending machine gave us all of the answers when invented even with hydraulic models for forming bends in steam pipe. How things and times have changed .

Thread: Help with lathe motor, running hot and then smoking..
25/01/2021 13:18:22

This looks very much like the Centrifugal Switch has stuck the part of this switch is the sleeve that moves on the armature shaft disconnect the start winding and changeover to the run winding . when this does not change the motor runs hot very quickly and starts to smoke , You are going to have to dismantle the motor to check for problem does happen when a motor has not been used for some time.

The last one i fitted had a handle in the middle on the side which was of . Pushed up gave you one direction and down the opposite direction you the needed a separate Switch for on and off because the first one was just for rotation , I think this was a MEM switch.

Thread: Whats the right material to make a compressor valve pestel?
08/01/2021 13:40:19

Pestel is a new product name i have not heard off . Pressure valve that i have used have a O ring in the seat that can be replaced when they leak your valve sounds like a non return valve ? I have repaired a automatic pressure switch with a small piece of fine rubber sheet which is still working . If you have any more info I bet some one will have some info.
