Thread: CR-Cells Can Go BANG!
20/02/2023 11:17:01

Royal Mail will deliver batteries in certain circumstances. I have sold two cameras which included their removable batteries. I was asked what was in the box, and replied "a camera with its battery fitted". That was ok because the battery was in its intended place. I have had batteries delivered via Royal Mail several times and strongly suspect that the senders had not been honest when posting them.

I wonder if the guarantee was longer than a week?

Thread: AVM MAS 140 lathe
19/02/2023 16:25:49

The hole in the front of the chuck body maybe an oiler. Shame about the front of the jaws, I would carefully face them back using a carbide tool, and reshamfer them. Do you have the outside jaw set?

Thread: stainless steel valves in cast iron guide
17/02/2023 21:06:26

My Royal Enfield twins had bronze valve guides, they must not have any sort of seal fitted like most cast iron ones do.

Bronze and stainless steel are not the best mixtures because of the chrome in the stainless.

Thread: Electrolysis of water
17/02/2023 19:56:08

Is electrolysis the source of the hydrogen that will power the super clean motors?

Thread: AVM MAS 140 lathe
16/02/2023 18:16:40

The first thing I noticed about the lathe pictures is that it has no sign of being abused, in fact, it looks almost unused.

Thread: mini rotary table top on ebay
16/02/2023 18:10:02

I'm a sucker for something unusual and cheap, so now I have bought a 98mm diameter rotary table top and have to make into something useful. Maybe it could go on a tilting angle plate, or be drilled underneath for indexing, say 64 and 50 positions. Any suggestions? The hole in the middle is 3/8"

Thread: Which lathe has 32x1.5mm pitch spindle thread?
15/02/2023 20:52:10

The only thread that size that I was able to find is the er25 collet nut thread, not quite the best mount for that chuck. 33mm is the closest I could find, but the pitch is much coarser.

Thread: Newman 3ph motor help
15/02/2023 19:05:08

3hp or 1/2hp as the motor plate indicates? With the lower power motor, you would be best advised to get a new motor. The mounting and spindle would probably be different so it would not be a straight swap with the old one.

Thread: Has anyone here ever modified a capstan attachment to fit a regular centre lathe?
14/02/2023 13:55:37

There are capstan attachments made for some of the Smart & Brown lathes which probably could be modified to fit your lathe, you would need a mill for the mods, though.

Thread: Which lathe has 32x1.5mm pitch spindle thread?
14/02/2023 13:47:49

This is where having thread gauges in inch and metric would come in useful. 1.5mm pitch is 16.933 tpi and that would be relatively easy to gauge, but not easy to measure an internat thread.

Thread: Help to identify make of rotary table and unusual lever.
13/02/2023 18:45:45

I looked on Lathes UK at Hauser and their rotary tables and couldn't find a match. Too many differences between the 160mm and your 6".

Very clever, I had never thought of such a thing.

Thread: Design help for Myford style saddle stop
10/02/2023 18:45:38

I have milled a block of aluminium in a similar fashion to Diogenes II one, but I hadn't thought of the "flexure" design and may have left the gap too wide relative to the bed width. I will find out tomorrow when I go back to the museum. The collar on the rod is also a useful thought.

Thread: Cigarette Papers

Back when I smoked, the Rizla red and green papers were 0.0015" thick and the blue were 0.001".

Thread: Ideas for highlighting engraved digits
10/02/2023 18:28:28

Rotring, Edding and Pentel make paint marker pens which would be worth looking at, easier than a brush for some tricky jobs.

Thread: Finally got a proper lathe

Anyone noticed the set true chuck?

Thread: All motorcycle races and trials events in Northern Ireland cancelled this year
10/02/2023 18:17:09

Thats a tragedy, it will cost people quite a lot to bring their vans and bikes over to the UK mainland to compete. I had never thought about the insurance needed for the sport. I assumed that each competitor had insurance.

Thread: Finally got a proper lathe

I agree with needing a proper switch, I would add a no volt on off with an emergency button. A lot of Myfords came from the factory with just the reversing switch, my boss when I was an instrument mechanic bought a brand new Super 7 long bed and that only had the reversing switch. It was used as is and we knew no better at the time. The reversing switches are expensive and parts are not that easy to come by, that is a good reason to add a proper switch and only set the reversing switch when switched off.

Thread: Design help for Myford style saddle stop

I am thinking of a variation on the 254 stops which can be locked at any point along the bed rather than a bolted on fixture at the left hand end. The fixed type would be more suitable for a shorter lathe, the Atlas is 24" between centres. I made two for the museum's Smart and Brown model A to go either side of the saddle, but they fit on the inverted vee of the bed and are simpler to design.
