Thread: Is there an error in the Bridgeport Mill manual or am I being stupid? |
27/08/2023 11:06:14 |
Good job Jim, looks right to me. One thing that struck me looking at your original scan is that the motor makes twice as much power at the high speed position, maybe another factor to consider when deciding on which permutation to choose. William. |

I've never touched a Bridgeport but can't resist having a shot at this. I think it is the "Low Range High Range" labels on the left side of the table that are misleading. At the top of the page it says that the motor runs at 1400 or 2800 rpm and the bottom two rows of speeds are double the top two rows so my guess is: Top row is Switch position 1, Low Range Second row is Switch position 1, High Range Third Row is Switch position 2, Low Range Fourth Row is Switch position 2, High Range William. |

This fellow Jan Sverre Haugjord on Youtube has done a number of ELS installs on various Myfords: https://youtu.be/vzGhr4lxajY Not the slickest presentation style but lots of info if you have the patience to dig through his videos. William. |

I suspect it is not only the item used to ‘tap-down’ for seating on parallels that causes issues. Agreed. Something I have found in my limited experience is that the vice needs to be pretty tight before you start tapping to prevent "bouncing". William. |

The three plate process is fascinating and one day maybe I'll get around to having a go but in the meantime I bought a decent 24"x18" granite plate second hand for £40 or so which good enough for me. There are plenty of videos on YouTube as has been mentioned, definitely worth looking at Oxtools and Robin Renzetti (ROBRENZ) for cast iron and granite but you might find this a bit nearer to what you are contemplating: Shed Dweller . He is using granite floor tiles but the principles might be applicable to porcelain. William. |

Thanks both, I'm going to sell this on so I'll list it as "probably" early Harrison L5. William. |

I recently took delivery of a nice used Bison 3 jaw chuck which I will use on my Boxford once I have made a backplate for it. It came with a backplate fitted which was assumed to be Myford fit since it came from a Myford equipped workshop but I am pretty sure it isn't as it measures about 1½" x 6tpi. Can anyone suggest what that might fit? thanks, William. |
Thread: Hose Size |
11/11/2022 17:13:08 |
As I understand it propane will attack the material used for acetylene hoses so you do need propane rated orange ones. When I got set up to braze bicycle frames I was advised to go for the lightest thinnest hoses possible as they make the torch easier to manipulate. I bought a set with 3mm bore from Noz- alls who I found to be very helpful: Nozalls MicroBore. I have never got close to running out of flow but I have never used them for cutting or with a big rosebud tip. William. |

Cutwel have an offer on their standard precision sets at the moment (.010mm runout): Cutwel I ordered an ER32 set yesterday, arrived today. They look good and came in a reasonably nice mdf case, appear to be made by YG tools in Korea. William. |

When I bought my Boxford a few years ago I was concerned about backlash too but, as Phil says, once I gained a bit of experience using the lathe I realised that backlash isn't actually that big a problem. If it is a metric lathe like mine with a 2.5mm pitch screw on the cross slide then I think you will have to make your own replacement or find a decent used or NOS part - I have searched in vain for a supplier of acme threaded bar in this pitch. Thank William. I think I will do just that. Do you have any photos of your install you could share? Not the best photos I'm afraid but should give you an idea: 626 Mill Album - photo below shows the finished job. It was quite a fiddle and I made a bit of a meal of it but it works well, I sacrificed the quill stop and used the threaded rod to fix the angle iron brackets. With a less bulky scale (as I think the magnetic ones are) it would be a simpler job. The fine feed knob is removed for visibility. William. |

Thank you everyone for such helpful replies. I was I like the idea of including the quill in the Z axis inputs, Martin. I need to reed up on a 'combiner box' Plus one on the combiner, I fitted one of these to my 626: M-DRO Summing Interface . If you are going to fit DRO on the Z might as well go the whole hog. Posted by Barry Smith 4 on 28/09/2022 20:31:05: In terms of levelling does anyone have any comments on mounting a mill / lathe on adjustable pads and using them to level the machine. There seems to be quite a choice out there these days. I bought one new a couple of years ago. The cabinet doesn't have a flat base so I couldn't see any obvious way to attach levelling feet. If/when I get round to moving it my idea is to make up a simple frame from angle iron to create fixing points for feet. William. |

Looks good, I would be very tempted if I hadn't recently bought an ARC Versatile. In my experience Zoro tend to be very expensive, I only buy things that are on sale when the prices come down to what you can buy the same things for elsewhere eg: Indexa PVM100 at ManoMano. William. |
Thread: Switch wire up |
05/07/2022 17:11:40 |
I can't give you any information specific to Myfords but my Boxford has a similar switch. When I bought it it was configured to switch a 3 phase motor but some of the contacts were all but burned out and it failed. However there were enough good bits in it to reconfigure and use to switch a VFD. If you can't figure out what goes where with a multimeter you may be able to work it out by dismantling it. One thing that may help is that not all of those terminals are necessarily going to connect to "in" or "out" wires - some may need to be ganged together with short pieces of wire. William. |
Thread: mini grinders |

Never used one but a pencil type air powered die grinder might be an option, maybe they don't use so much air as the standard sized ones. Very fast and not too expensive if you already have a compressor. I noticed this one in MSC's last advantage sale: William. |
Thread: Boxford AUD/BUD single phase conversion |

I've done my CUD with original motor and a Mitsubishi VFD. I was accustomed to the original stop start switch and much prefer it to buttons so I devised a wiring scheme to retain it. I had to dismantle it to rearrange the contacts and some were burned out but there were enough usable to do what I needed. Photo shows my prototype enclosure to be remade in steel when I get round to it, and you can just seen the VFD tucked into the cabinet. I have also attached my schematic wiring diagram. Please note, I am not an electrical engineer, this was devised with help from this forum and from the chap at Inverter Drive Supermarket who is a mine of information, so use at your own risk. It has been working without any problem for a year or so. William. Edited By William Chitham on 11/05/2022 12:55:03 Edited By William Chitham on 11/05/2022 13:03:23 |

It's a shame because this guy puts up a lot of fascinating posts about machining small parts using a fabulous collection of machines, especially Schaublin. W. |
