Thread: A note on the editors note... (Issue 325)
01/03/2023 11:01:22

As a clean shaver who loves few things more than the ritual of the old fashioned single blade shave with a wonderful Sandalwood and other goodness soap, foamed and applied with an old school shaving brush, and who REALLY misses his old twin cylinder two stroke... I really hope that bench note resonates with everyone else as much as it did me. There seems to be a growing list of jobs round the shop, and a commensurate bucket of insert tooling, where I've thought I'll try the new way and decided actually I much prefer my ground lump of HSS. It's all horses for courses I guess, but new and expensive definitely does not equate to better!

All the best...

Thread: Preparing for long period of disuse...
07/01/2023 12:06:52

Thanks for the tips folks. I think I'll stick with the way oil rather than grease. It's elbow surgery so I may be able to potter a bit carefully. Will make sure to slacken all belts. The tidy up is a given, but I shall give some thought to making things a bit more accessible. Maybe some marking out I can do for upcoming projects. Certainly going to take advantage of the time building my F360 muscles!

Thanks for the well wishes.

Hi folks...

So, I'm having surgery next week so the workshop is going to be out of use for possibly a few months. Is there any preparations I should be making, such as giving everything a heavy coat of way oil perhaps?

Thanks.

Thread: Doug Roseman &/or Steam Fair models in general

Fantastic thanks folks!

Anyone know of a chap called Doug Roseman? I'm told he's a member of the model engineering community.

Visited Carter's Steam Fair yard open day today and expressed interest in modelling some of the engines & rides, particularly/initially the swing boats. Unfortunately they don't keep any drawings, but this chap has done some models of their kit and may be able to help, or at least be a good bet to talk to on the subject.

By the same token, if any of you know of any good resources for general drawings or mechanical descriptions of fairground rides, I'd be most grateful!

Thread: A whole lot of not a lot...
30/11/2022 20:40:41

@old mart - got a lovely little ceramic heater to ease that work...

@Bill Phinn - sorry to hear that. Might be a situation I'm in before too long as went through it with grandparents. Never know, could 'get lucky' and go before they do. Got a long standing agreement with an old pal to bump me off if I get too squiffy though, so hopefully he'll come through...

@Dalboy - both machines currently have setups waiting for the same tool unfortunately. Thought I had bore mic's bigger than half inch... I don't!

30/11/2022 17:54:01

Do you ever find yourself just sat in the workshop enjoying your own space?

Don't have much I can do til another tool arrives lest setups be disturbed, so just sat here with some easy rock, a smoke and a beer feeling utterly at peace.

Ought to do this more often, I've come up with several ideas for next phases and methods for future setups...

Bliss!

Over the bloody moon!

The oil cans are getting a bit clammy as it happens. I'll stick them back down the side, cheers for the heads up.

I'm not the tidiest creature by any stretch but I do find comfort in a well knolled tool box.

I'm not going to say never, but for now it was crying out for use!

Thread: How To Mill A Bridge
28/10/2022 21:47:56

What an interesting bit of kit!

How are they managing the bridge lifts? Do they have to pack up all their tools plus tent and vacate the bridge?

I was informed by a bridge operator that most lift bridges have to remain active, short of mechanical failure. Whether it be designated on demand or timed openings, maritime passage is protected by law.

Thanks for sharing

Good stuff. Looks like a venerable old machine you have there. Good to see it being fired up in anger. Many a fine tune played on an old fiddle!

It is indeed... 1941 Logan Powrkaft 10". I'm going to treat it to some modern furnishings for quality of life of course but it's a joy to use as is. I originally intended to give it some paint when I stripped it down, but when it came round, it just felt wrong somehow.

Cheers chap.

It's been a long old road,I can tell you!

Hey folks...

Celebrating this evening! My sparky finally finished wiring up the garage today, so I fired up the lathe IMMEDIATELY!

Making a threaded bushing to match the horrible plastic horn, so as to fit a much nicer sounding copper one to my friends narrowboat.

Honestly never understood what happy crying was all about until today. It SO GOOD to be back on the tools!!!

All the more excited for the arrival of the mill now...

Happy Thursday All!

Thread: Non-steaming models. Sacrilege??
27/10/2022 04:45:37

I'll definitely build one that steams, preferably a ride along. I guess I'm just wondering how the effort, expense, reward equation works out on smaller models.

I think I'll do one that doesn't steam first, as it'll no doubt become a household ornament anyway. By which time I'll have a better handle on the silver soldering and hopefully the confidence & competence to go for a live one.

Thread: Die filer questions
26/10/2022 20:09:22

Hi folks.

I'm helping with a workshop clearance of a chap whos sadly died. I've come across this die filer under a bench, but I'm at somewhat of a loss in that know nothing about them, aside from the basics of use.

The belt cover casting has New Wonder embossed on it, but I haven't as yet found any reference to such a manufacturer.

pxl_20221026_165206569.jpg

Can anyone kindly give me a clue what it might be worth?

Thanks, Jay.

Thread: Non-steaming models. Sacrilege??
25/10/2022 22:39:14

Oh, I absolutely agree Jon. Even still though, no-one wants to be 'that guy'...

25/10/2022 22:20:16

Hey folks.

Having seen so much about how difficult boilers are to make, expensive to buy etc. Is it sacrilegious to start considering making non-steaming models?

I mean everything can still move by air, or electronically for 'live' model purposes, just not as originally intended.

Is this something people do?? I mean I'd obviously prefer to do it properly but...

Thoughts?

All the best, Jay

One problem I'm a tad bitter about is the second hand sellers wanting new money for everything. Spoke to one about a QCTP to be told he wanted as much £ for the post with two holders as I got the brand new one with two standard, one v groove and a parting blade holder with a blade. No contest!

I expect the second hand one was a genuine Dickson which if new would cost several times as much as the far eastern one from RDG so not really a fair contest

That's a fair point I didn't consider... Although I didn't check the manufacturer, was just told it's off a Colchester. Whether or not it'll come back to haunt me, for my purposes I think the RDG item still made the better purchase. Even if I later decide some of the surfaces want a scraping. As far as recourse goes, I paid on the credit card so can always go that route if they don't play fair in after sales...
