Well I bit the bullet and bought a chromebook, very pleased I am with it, linux activated as well. Am I right in thinking Autocad for android is now free? Can't quite believe it but seems the obvioous choice to me?

Any ideas

Linux for 16 years, over half of it with Mint.

I eventually decided on a different route for moving the vertical head of my 1ES, weighing in at 42 kg.

No picture to hand, but I basically welded up some 25 mm box section to form a bridge cradle with support feet by which the head could be lifted a few mm. via a bolt. I place a board on the table, remove the head and then lower the table to the same height as the bench where the head lives. The cradle and head are then slid along the board onto the bench.

The original idea was to have a length of track on the board and rollers on the cradle feet, but I needed to mount the head in a hurry, so never got round to that bit.

Bit of fiddling but a cheap solution that works for me.

I have been a happy with Qcad via Linux for a long time but now I am looking at Chromebooks. I hear that Linux can be dual booted so perhaps not a problem, but is there prefered, !!!?? drawing app for the Chomebook for simple drawings?

Might get into 3d printing one day?

I have an old "circa wartime" Herbert 10 vertical with this 1-3/8 taper, fortunately it came with a Clarkson autolock. As Tim suggested I also have turned up a "thin" adaptor sleeve to modify it to Int 30, good solution to my mind.

Great quality the Herbert, unfortunately a mate left the coolant pump motor running, there was not slosh in the cast base, motor burnt out ! Another project.!

Well,thank you to all for the replies, as every very informative. I will order a litre of slideway oil at about 8 pounds a litre it might as well be done. Not a great great price to pay for peace of mind, will last me longer than a year and can spend that much on beer or wine in a night, .............not big or clever.

Came across the above recently in an ad. Is it worth the bother, normally used motor oil or WD ?

After 35 years I have finally found a vertical head for my 1ES, problem is best way to move it about and fit. Most options I have seen, maybe on larger machines is a side mounted crane, but the 1ES seem to have no provision.

I had in mind to bolt a track with traveller, to the ceiling joists but have been known to need to move machines about !!

At 42 kg its quite a lump and don't fancy a floor or wall mounted crane, or buying/using an engine crane.

Best option to me seems to be a cradle with the head hanging from it which is pushed on a track from the table to/from the storage shelf. ?

Am I missing anything, any better ideas.

It may be the heat getting to some people. 

I have "seen" some of this recently. Play nicely boys, say nothing if you have nothing nice to say, is a fair starting point.

Slightly off topic, but an option is the down the weedkiller route, not for everyone I know, but does kill the roots. Professional versions of a popular brand are 4 times the strength and a fifth the price of stuff normal stuff. only for professional use.......of course.

A great thread lots of information, I have a 1940 Rudge moped with the very popular 98 cc Villiers engine, lots of companies used them, James, Francis Barnet, will restore it one day and come back to this thread for information

I have a friend needing to move an L6 who asked if I knew the weight ? Having searched on line I have come up with 970kg which I think is not correct. I have an L6 with manual and the weight is not in there !!

My A & S 1ES weights in around the 900 kg mark but I can't see the L6 being up there, might be wrong, often am, ask She. lol

Have a look at "parcel compare", all the big couriers are listed there. I was going to get a 42kg vertical head collected and delivered for £28. In the end the nice man said he would keep it for two months until I was passing nearby, on my way to a holiday cottage. Added a couple of nights in a nice village pub b & b, that made the head not quite such a bargain!!......but kept "she" happy. lol.

Taking hobby use are we? So a nice old cast iron machine, can be had for small money compared to a light weight or expensive? band saw. Time is not an issue is it? Auto cut off, means you don't have to watch it, if you can stop yourself. lol.

I have two donkey saw, I am booked in for therapy soon, think I might be a collector or hoarder, one needs to go, but that is a good way of eliminating time on a wasted stoke?. lol.

For the equivalent of a vertical band I use an angle grinder with a thin disc, works for me.
