Thread: A simple oscillating steam engine
13/08/2019 23:49:23

I also made this engine as my first ever attempt to use a lathe in anger. When I got it to run it took days to get the smile off my face. I had 5 attempts to get the piston right, "I'll just give it another skim,,,,,,,,,, another one for the bin" Learnt a great amount building the engine and now working on more difficult projects. As several people have said, great design and good step by step guide on Steve's website. smiley John

Thread: What Did You Do Today 2019
26/07/2019 23:11:05

Our air ambulance people must be more resourceful, when her that must be obeyed was air lifted after a very serious RTA they just took a fence down and fire brigade rebuilt it. God Bless the Air Ambulance people. You never know you may need them next... John

Thread: Mystery machine..........

Many thanks Rod for the picture of the Duplex Saw. I now know what I have got (ebay buy). I have altered my drive to put the motor underneath the main frame so that when cutting it does not stick out the front of bench.

Morty (Pete) you may find that you need the big weight , I have increased mine and it cuts a lot better than it did.

Thread: What lathes have you had?
21/07/2019 19:19:42

My first lathe was a 1906-8? 5inch split bed Drummond, still got. Then a much modified Drummond/Myford "M" just sold to make way for an inherited Myford ML7. I wish that I had kept the "M", just hate the ML7. I expect to see the burning crosses out front for speaking such heressy.....wink

Thread: Finally sort of know which lathe to buy, but?
19/07/2019 21:16:27

I have just "upgraded" from a Drummond/Myford "M" to a ML7 and wish that I hadn't bothered. The myford is very fragile and flexible compared to the "M". I have gone back to using my 1908 5" split bed Drummond.

Thread: Aldi bargain laser level

Last week picked up two pairs of work trousers reduced at Aldi. £2.99 a pair.... well worth looking at their reduced stock.. John

Thread: Aircraft General Discussion
09/07/2019 21:12:23

I was busy trying to sort out workshop this afternoon and heard a very loud multi cylinder aircraft, ran (hobbled) outside to see the Lancaster going over at approx. 300ft. What a beautifull sight but the engines sounded like buckets of nails. About an hour later a Jet Provost flew over (a lot higher). Second time we have seen the Lanc this year, first time over Rutland Water and it sounded superb that time. Oh well back to sorting out the workshop.

Thread: Hemswell Cliff, Lincs
08/07/2019 21:50:56

We regularly go to the Autojumbles at Hemswell and I have found several bargains there, Myford/Drummond M with loads of tooling £200.00, Over 40 model engineering magazines £5.00, There are usually several stalls selling engineering bits also 3 cups of tea and 3 bacon butties for about £8.00 can't be bad.

Sorry on reading above post perhaps I should say Draw rather than Drill??? JC dont know

14/06/2019 23:18:03

This is more than likely one of my stupid questions but,,, I am trying to model a steam engine cylinder and want to drill a hole "steam port" at an angle to the "XY" plane. Is there a simple way to do this please? Many thanks in advance, JC thinking

Thread: Oh bugger, I told you I was ill
14/06/2019 22:37:33

Pleased you are on the mend. I had major back surgery nearly 20 years ago but your comment no pins and needles/pain, really struck a bell for me. No pain for the first time in 10 years and still no pain if I stick to my limitations. Try to enjoy time off and being pampered..... It won't last..wink JC

Thread: Whissendine Steam Rally 2019
03/06/2019 21:00:41

Displayed my modest/ amateur engines at rally for weekend and had a great time. Some very interesting and diverse displays and very friendly helpful people. Pity about the weather on Sunday but Saturday was superb. Even "Her that Must Be Obeyed" enjoyed herself..... Many thanks to the organizers and workers for such an enjoyable weekend.

Thread: NME&MEX Doncaster
11/05/2019 23:12:29

Managed to get to Doncaster again this year, a really enjoyable day with too much to look at properly in one day. Sadly no gas turbines to destroy the eardrums this year. I thought that this year there were more models showing that "used just off the farm/factory" look than last year. I for one prefer that look rather than polished within an inch of it's life look. But each to their own. Again the Bentley Blower was my personal best in show... A great day had by all but where's my bed? crook

Thread: Soft Solder v Silver Solder
09/05/2019 13:39:30

Thank you all for your replies and advice. The engine will run at a maximum of 60psi (ME upright boiler) and as I have some good quality "soft" solder I will try that. According to the spec melting point is 221C. Yes Jason I will be looking for a better torch at Doncaster Saturday.wink 2

08/05/2019 12:46:27

cylinders01.jpgI am making the cylinders for a twin cylinder oscillating engine. Each cylinder consists of two pieces soldered together. As I will be running this on steam would I need to silver solder or would soft solder be OK? I thought to tin the surfaces first as steam ports would be drilled through and want to be sure of a complete seal/joint. Many thanks for any help views on this, John
