Alan, right now I am also completing a ST #4 engine from the same period of casting production. 35...40 years old and still with a cast iron crankshaft. The ST #4 drawings I have were drawn in 1953. I found the dimensions of the webs of the crankshaft to be incomplete in the drawing. The size given is 5/8 x 3/8 x ? To what size did you finish yours? Thanks, Manfred |

Brian, Rik, Thanks for your support. Since having some experience with PU belting on spinning wheels (wife) my first choice would be a seamless o-ring. I found that it is quite a task to achieve a (more or less) true running PU joint even for a low rev application like a spinning wheel. Manfred |

Many years ago I bought a new Toyo MD-1 drilling machine in Devon. The 2 drive belts (which look like commercial grade o-rings) have become brittle over the years. Who can help with a source for a set of spare drive belts or with information about the dimensions of the original belts? Thanks, Manfred |

Even better news tonight. On the ML10 lathe the top slide can be set to required angle for machining the impeller casting without the handles interfering. So I was able to turn the impeller wings to the proper dimensions in a straight forward and simple machine job. I did‘nt expect that and I‘m quite happy that it worked out so easy. Good news. Due to the help provided I managed successfully to machine most of the impeller casting on my ML10 lathe. The final step to be done is to bringing the impeller fins to right size/angle. Next weekend I'll check if the top slide can be set to the position required. If not, a mixture of a provisional hand-turning rest and a guide bar set at the correct angle (as Duncan stated) could be the solution. Manfred |

Many years ago I started to machine a set of Stuart No. 2 centrifugal pump castings. Due to a relocation of housing and workshop the project was interruppted for more than a decade. Now and (hopefully) finally I am back on it again. After getting familiar with the drawings (again) and sorting out what is already finished and what has still to be done I stumbled across the impeller. Jim, many thanks for the reply. Mine is an original ML10, too. I bought it brand new in the early 90's in Cardiff. For unknown reason my lathe (roller bearing headstock) was packed with the Speed10 set of pulleys. I collected the lathe in person and discovered the mistake only after returning back home to Germany. Well, the Speed10 pulleys are on it and since then I avoid the 3 top speeds. No real problem. Just recently I got the information that using the 2 original single groove pulleys makes the lathe running smoother and more quiet. This should come from the larger diameters of the ML10 pulleys. Now I'm thinking about a conversion back to the original configuration. Manfred |

Thanks for the replies and the warm welcome! My current workshop machinery: Myford ML10 lathe, EBK vertical milling machine, floor standing 3MT drill, bench grinder, lots of accessories. In the past my main interest was in 5" gauge steam locomotives and stationary steam engines of all kind. Now I do a lot of chassis work for tube audio amplifiers and turn and mill special hardware as required for the units. Manfred

Hi, I live in Dorsten/Germany and work for a Radio/TV station since ages. In the past I did quite a lot of model engineering work. Increasing workload at my job and growing requests of the family finally led to the decision to drastically reduce the time spent in the workshop. Today I mainly use my machinery to make mechanical parts for my other hobby which is hifi-audio. I still enjoy reading construction series for steam model of all kinds and hope to be able to contribute here and there. |
