Toyo MD-1 mini drill - drive belts needed

Many years ago I bought a new Toyo MD-1 drilling machine in Devon. The 2 drive belts (which look like commercial grade o-rings) have become brittle over the years. Who can help with a source for a set of spare drive belts or with information about the dimensions of the original belts?

Thanks,

Manfred

Hello Manfred - I have a Record ML-210 mini lathe (Toyo look-a-like) which uses those o-ring type drive belts. I managed to obtain some spares local to me from here:

Hi Rik,

Thanks for your reply. How did you find out what size O-rings were needed in your machine?

Could you go the same route as for a Unimat SL and use round polyurethane belting? Easy to join with a hot knife, even easier with a plastic cutting tip on a soldering gun. Start with the belt a little too long and shorten until it doesn't slip.

Manfred - I took the little lathe to the firm in the link and they matched the o-rings to it. By the way, I tried polyurethane / hot knife belting route but it did not work - I recommend the o-ring option as the way to go. Good luck.

Brian, Rik,

Thanks for your support. Since having some experience with PU belting on spinning wheels (wife) my first choice would be a seamless o-ring. I found that it is quite a task to achieve a (more or less) true running PU joint even for a low rev application like a spinning wheel.

Use V blocks and a straight edge, works perfectly every time for round PU belting and also for bonding O rings from cord.

Nick, thats a nice idea how to align the ends of the belting stuff for a good joint. I'll give it a try.

Thanks for posting, Manfred
