Thread: Gear cutting
19/10/2018 14:45:08

Thanks very much Brian, that,s what I wanted to know. I do have power feed for the left to right table movement [x ? ]

I forgot to mention that the cutters are 1,5 Mod,though perhaps this is not important.

I shall have a go at it as soon as I can set up and will keep you posted.

Thanks again.

Larry,

Thread: Lathe Vibration
19/10/2018 14:38:06

My Craftsman lathe is no light weight and is bolted to the floor, runs well at all speeds except one of the high speeds,at which it is subject to some vibration, which I cannot account for. It,s not really a problem since I seldom use that speed, just odd !

Thread: Gear cutting
19/10/2018 14:03:51

Hi Everybody,

I want to pick your brains regarding the above subject. I am new to gear cutting,so I wish to ask before I screw things up.

This is what I have

Set of cutters

Lux mill

Mild steel blanks [to begin with ]

Rotary table.

This is what I dont have;

Experience

Expertise

.What I would like to know is

A What spindle speed should I be using

B When cutting, should I take small cuts or go to full dept.

C What feed should I use

I know that this is old hat to most of you,but it,s new ground to me and I would be thankful for any advice.

Thank you in advance for your help

Thread: Cleaning with Parafin?
13/10/2018 17:25:18

I use white spirits for most cleaning jobs, but in case it might burst into flames/blow up/rot my hands off,I make sure to have my fire extinguisher/fire blanket/bucket of sand/gloves face mask ect all to hand before using it,no point in taking chances ! Cop yourself on,you,re only cleaning a lump of cast iron, not the Mona Lisa.

Paraffin used to be quite common until recent years [Esso Blue, and the other one,Pink ] but now all I can get is Kerosene. I dont see any difference, runs my heating system and my Primus stoves, along with cleaning off heavy muck, and cheaper than white spirits.

However,as others have pointed out, there is a wide range of stuff out there for cleaning, some of it very good, some of it it useless [ask me how I know ] The important thing is that when you are finished with the cleaning, dont spare the oil.

And after all that, have fun with your new machine, make sure it gets dirty, that,s what it,s all about !!wink

Thread: CBN grinding wheel in model engineer workshop?
10/10/2018 16:52:39

What colour is that wheel ? The reason I ask is because wheels for woodwork tools are usually white, and slow running, sometimes water cooled.

Now,I have a drill sharpening kit made by Markel, which comes with two grinding wheels, one white, the other, green. The white one does a great job on HSS Drills,in no time flat. The green wheel is for masonry drills [works OK on HSS as well ]. My unit is not suitable for tool sharpening, but a similar wheel might be if mounted on a bench grinder.

Might be worth a try.

PS My unit is driven by a hand drill [dont laugh ] so the speed is about 2500,perhaps around the same as a bench grinder?,and has recovered many, many drills for me,since my free hand attempts are best forgotten.sad

There should be two small wheels under the opposite side from where the handle is. They are quite small and only useful if the floor is dead smooth. If you lift the handle, you should be able to move the machine

Good for you Guy,remember it,s never a good idea to rush into things ! Took me almost as long to get here, but it,s worth it. Would love to be able to do your kind of work.wink

Thread: A tale of two suppliers
05/10/2018 11:48:34

I buy stuff from China from time to time, and it takes so long to get here that I tend to forget that I ordered it in the first place [grey cells degeneration] But then, out of the blue---Surprise,Surprise,my goods arrive and it,s like having another birthday. I can,t wait to open the pack to see what,s inside !

The thing is,they have never sent the wrong stuff ! Makes you wonder !

I have known it to make short work of a 6" nail. !

Nothing really wrong there,it,s just a different approach, they call it GUNTERING

Thread: scam?

Simple way to deal with this guy, tell him you will accept cash money, the kind you can spend in the pub,you do not give refunds, and you want cash on collection and to have-a-nice-day !

I dont think you,ll hear any more from Curtis !

Thread: Lathe ways heavy reconditioning
23/09/2018 17:37:23

As long as it causes no problem, leave it alone. You will get used to it,might even get to like it. When it gets covered in swarf, you wont even see it ! Is it just rust coloured,or surface rust ?

I would be inclined to leave the ways alone [treat them like Mother,s-in-law ],the less you mess with them, the better.

Thread: I would like to say
22/09/2018 16:54:38

Dont spend too much time saving, time passes quickly and life is too short. By the time you have saved enough to buy all you want, you may be too old to use them,so just buy something and get stuck in.

Who knows, you might even get to like it !!cheekydevil

Thread: 3 in 1 sheetmetal bender
14/09/2018 21:43:03

I never did believe that one size fits all or one machine does all or that one machine does three different things. They dont ! they tend to do one thing OK,the next thing, sort of alright, and the last thing, total crap ! That makes them a total waste of money.Same thing applies to woodwork machines; A saw is a saw,A planer is a planer, A spindle is a spindle, simple as that ! There is no such thing as a machine for all seasons !

Thread: Junior Hacksaw Blades
14/09/2018 21:30:02

B&Q and others do use metal in their blades, but it,s mixed with putty, and not even good putty !

No doubt they have their uses,I just have not found what they might be.

Thread: Metal banding
14/09/2018 09:06:35

Dont think that stuff would be too easy to work with. I would be inclined to go for 1"x1/8" flat,or 30x1.5 mm,if you can get it.
