I thought I was the only one this happened to. I,m so happy I,m not alone. |
Thread: ...I'll just finish up this part.. |

Just as well everything went well for you, you could have had problems with that job !! |
Thread: M Type Apron Direction |
21/06/2020 16:17:12 |
Could never understand why some lathes were made like that ,arse about face. One would think that common sense would dictate that to move right, one should turn right ! The ways of the Lord are strange, those of the makers, even more so. |

Whitworth bolts are very hard to get over here [Ireland ], I had to make some for a friend to repair his old farm equipment. Just as well I have a collection of Whit and B,S,F taps and dies, never know when they might come in handy. |
Thread: Odd Screw on Boxford Tailstock |
21/06/2020 16:00:23 |
I have just like that on my Craftsman lathe, never knew what it was for [really ] but it does prevent the locking lever from falling down on the bed. And I was thinking about cutting it off !! |

Thread: Making Parallels |

The approach by Tom Walshaw [Tubal , Cain, often wondered where he got that name from, or why ] seems like a real down-to- earth way. Good to see that someone else uses the hammer to solve problems ! |
Thread: boring head and tools |
19/06/2020 17:43:12 |
Boring bars are easy enough to make LH or RH, much the same as internal threading tools LH/RH. I have made several and they worked well. Only problem I had was when I tried an internal grooving tool, but we wont talk about that !! Make up one as Jason says and it will work fine. Those heads have many uses, as you will find. |
Thread: New member in Ireland |

As you say, all makers have their Monday morning/Friday evening offerings. I have had some of them, and not just cheap ones either. Most of the Chinese stuff is OK, not toolroom but not priced at that level either. Good enough for everyday metalbashing. |

Two wedges and a big hammer ? |
Thread: Pesky Government Announcement! |
17/06/2020 17:40:48 |
Glad to see that I am not the only one who gets a P-I-T-A with these stupid "programmes", every moron they can find spouting their rubbish, as if it mattered. Like that other Member, I too dont buy papers, seldom watch TV and rarely even listen to the radio now, since they put a prize moron on the only station I used to like. I dont feel I,m missing out on much. |
Thread: Tail stock spindle out of line . |
17/06/2020 10:07:59 |
My Chester Craftsman lathe has a similar problem, seems to be too much clearance between the parts. I drilled and tapped to fit three screws, one on top and one each side to take up the play. Not ideal, but it helped. I think the real answer is to rebore the the tailstock and make a new spindle. It,s not a very good design, perhaps if the tailstock was split and clamped it might work better.

Would never depend on any sticky stuff to hold up shelves of any kind ! Hilti leads the way !! |
Thread: Mild Steel Rod in Metric Sizes |
16/06/2020 18:40:38 |
Not easy ! I suspect Andrew has a van with a roof rack. I have and can move almost anything on it, including two 20 ft lengths of 50x50 heavy wall box tubing, a while ago. For some strange reason everyone on the road gave me plenty of room ! No speeding, but we got home, 60 mile trip, safely., not sure I would like to repeat it though |
Thread: Ultrasonic toothbrushes |
16/06/2020 13:30:14 |
I have discussed this with my two Red Setters as to what type of toothpaste they would prefer, and the answer I got [more or less ] was "What the hell is wrong with a good bone"? Since it,s hard enough to brush their coats, I hate to think what it would be like to try brushing their teeth ! |
Thread: Mild Steel Rod in Metric Sizes |
16/06/2020 13:18:05 |
To Mc Black 2, I think I got my wires crossed, I should have said I was surprised to hear that Metric stock was so hard to find !! The old grey cells are not what they used to be !! |
Thread: Off cuts ? |

I doubt if you could have any idea, unless stated. Otherwise it,s just a bag of bits, a lucky dip? |
Thread: record no 22 vice jaw replacement |
15/06/2020 18:51:05 |
When I saw the price of new jaws for my 6" Record vise, it was just as well I was sitting down. Needless to say, they have not been replaced, and yes, those screws are very difficult to remove. I often wondered if Allen screws would not be a better idea ? However, still have to get the old ones out ! |

Most suppliers over here carry Metric and other. I use both. |
