Thread: Triumph motorcycle auction
08/08/2020 21:15:00

I see many English lads touring over here on bikes, but have never seen any of them on English machines.

Reason ?????frown

08/08/2020 20:44:24

Maybe they have gone the same way as the rest of them, down the chute ?

Dont recall seeing too many of their bikes around over the last twenty years.

Dont know how to spell D,R O, never mind how to use one !

6" rule is good enough for me [and I suspect for a good many others too, if the truth be known ]

Buy a sack full of bits and learn how to use the machine, then worry about a D,R,O, if you still feel you need one.

Thread: Anyone recognise this?

Over here it,s 110 volts for all site work--Full stop ! Yellow cable.

Blue is used for non-site work, although 110 v is often used in workshops too.

Thread: Drill Press Wobble on Chuck
03/08/2020 18:37:11

What size do you need to drill ?

"Larger diameter" is a bit vague, like, "How long is a piece of string"

I have a 16 speed Taiwan 16 speed drill with a 5/8" chuck, which with the chuck removed, can handle 1" drills with no problem. After that I use the milling machine.

Horses for courses.

Chris,

I think we must be in the same club ! Common sense is in short supply [in more fields than one ]

There is a big difference between factory and backyard shed, so, what applies in one, does not apply in the other. Sparey made this plain in his book, Bin the tables and see what works best for you, bearing in mind the equipment you have. This then is the "right" way for you to go.

I am now heading for the shelter before the hostile fire begins !cheeky

Thread: Can a small lathe handle a tail stock die holder?
02/08/2020 08:25:49

I tried cutting 10mm thread under power on my 6 inch Craftsman lathe using a tailstock die holder and found it a waste of time. The machine just did not want to know. I suppose I could have cut it by turning the chuck by hand ect but I dont see the point in that. I made a dieholder with a guide into which I can fit different sized bushes which guide the stock into the die in a straight line, along the lines of a GB threading stocks. The result is that I get good threads every time

I believe you need a fairly big motor to cut under power. I might add that my die holder is not used in the lathe, just in the vise.

Chris Tick Tock,

I hope you did not think I was being smart or rude with my reply, this was not my intention.

The reason I mentioned Sparey,s book is because, like you, I had little or no idea regarding cutting speeds/materials ect, but this book explains it all in plain terms. If it is now out of print, more,s the pity, since it,s a goldmine of information for beginners [like me ] No doubt there are many other good book available, I just never felt the need to look any further than this one since it seems to cover almost everything.

No doubt others here will advise you on the subject but the speeds given by Sparey are ;

Stainless Steel 50ft per min

Carbon Steel 60

Cast Iron,, Mild Steel Wrought Iron 80 ft per min

Brass 200

Aluminium and its Alloys 300.

To calculate revs Cutting speed divided by quarter of work diameter= r-p-m

Sorry if I sounded like a Smart-Arse, that is far from the case, I can assure you !sad

Try Sparey,s book, still good after all this time.
