Thread: Workshop time |

Not so sure about that small sherry ?? Sometimes a job looks better after a sherry or two, large or small ! Even better, you might end up seeing two jobs, each one looking better than the other ! Becomes very confusing and at that stage, you are better off leaving it and go have a drink, large or small ! The year will be long enough and the way "Lockdown" is going, you will have plenty of time for the workshop. Focus on the situation after Jan 1, now that should keep you busy for a while ! |
Thread: Christmas Disasters! |

As many of you have noticed Christmas is a king sized P-I-T-A. To me, it,s just another name for a day. |

Thread: Over wintering Motorcycle battery . |
15/12/2020 16:40:22 |
The battery on my ride on mower is supposed to be taken off at the end of the season and connected to its charger all Winter. I have done this from new and have never had any problem when refitting for another happy year grasscutting. |
Thread: My Bungalow fogs up outside |
15/12/2020 16:34:08 |
House I lived in in Dublin was of a simple kind, the temp inside and outside was always the same, FREEZING ! One never had to go outside to check the weather, it came in to you ! An early form of Air Conditioning, I suppose ! |
Thread: Way Wipers? |
15/12/2020 16:23:24 |
I seem to remember Sparey commented on using compressed air for this purpose, and I dont think he was too keen on the idea, not even blowing with your gob, so that just about says it all ! Felt is cheap and easy enough to get and fit, so why risk it ? |

I well remember using a length of 1/2" copper tube to shoot pieces of chalk across the with of the machine shop to catch the old charghand on the ear ! He never worked out where they came from, since we were "too far away" to be suspect. So yes, they should be banned, along with rolled up papers, skipping ropes, skateboards ect. The list is endless, and dont even mention workshops !! screwdrivers, hammers, even drills [cordless, of course ] ! May the Powers protect us from ourselves and each other |
Thread: Stand in wheel dressing tool |

This is NEVER a problem in my workshop ! The item I want is always exactly where I last dropped it, the trick is to remember where that was ??????? |
Thread: A Certain Age |
08/12/2020 13:34:25 |
Had to go for a checkup myself last week, to see if I am more senile this year than last. Last year tests took 1 hour, including waiting time This year total time 35 mins, so far so good ! Doc says, "Dont know why they send you down here, nothing much wrong with your mind " I said, "Perhaps just to keep you busy ?" She replied, "No need for that, let me tell you, it,s a very common problem with people of advanced years " Note-not OLD PEOPLE but those of "Advanced years". I like that term, makes me feel better. Just wondering that at 82, when do I cease being of "Advanced years" and become "OLD" ? I,m just wondering that at 82 when do I cease being of "Advanced years" and become " OLD" Scary !!! |

Thread: How does this rotary table bolt down? |
06/12/2020 15:01:43 |
I thought all rotary tables were much the same. It,s quite clear how that one bolts down, did you not notice the slotted lug at one side and the two bolt holes at the other ? My table is much the same, although I dont think it has those two small threaded holes, and I have no trouble clamping it either flat or upright. To mount it horizontal, I use an angle plate to make use of that lug and it works fine. |

Thread: bandsaw blades |
05/12/2020 16:39:54 |
I bought my Chinese bandsaw from Chester, many moons ago, never had any real problems with it, and I use it quite a lot. The fact is that the machine is only as good as the blade, either bench saw or bandsaw, wood or metal. Bad or cheap blades are a waste of both time and money. Good quality sawblades for the bench saw and likewise for the bandsaw are cheaper in the long run and perform better too. So, go for Bimetal blades. Just my experience !. |
Thread: Drilling then Tapping in Drill Press |
05/12/2020 10:04:18 |
Agree with Hopper, this is the method I use all the time. Not worth the bother of setting up gimmiics unless there is much tapping to be done. I bought a tapping head years ago for a job that required hundreds of holes, worked fine but I have seldom used it since. It,s now one of those things which will "come in handy some day " Anyone else got things like that ? |
Thread: Myford Hoover Motor |
03/12/2020 10:38:14 |
My pennyworth, for what it,s worth ! Motors are cheap enough replace it and get moving. Also get a proper switch and be finished with it. Only need reverse for left hand threads, not often. |
Thread: New Lathe at Lidl |
01/12/2020 13:34:44 |
I remember when those hand drill/lathes/saws/sanders ect were all over the place, you could even drill holes with it One of them, a Bridges make was claimed to drill 5/16" holes at 3500 rpm, it did, but the drill bits did not like it I think the idea was to make "A drill for all seasons", but the bearings did not last too long. A friend of mine might be interested in the Lidl one, when it gets here. |
Thread: Proxxon mf70 spindel/motor coupling?, any good idears? |
29/11/2020 13:43:58 |
Someone mentioned an allen key, which just reminded me of when I had to take my rotary table apart. No way could I see how to remove the top part from the base, but it turned out that there was a tiny Allen screw holding both together, which could not be reached by a standard Allen key, no room to get the key in place. The only way was to grind down a key to almost nothing to locate the screw, which could not be seen [maybe you were not supposed to see it, who knows ? ]There may be more stupid ways to do things, but method of holding two simple parts together must be high on the list. The table in question is a HOMGE. Might be worth looking to see if your job is similar. |

Dont know where I fit in ???? Many people have told me what they think I am, but I dont recall any mention of Engineer or engineer !! But then, when they bring me something to repair, it,s a different story ! So, I dont mind what others say about me, as long as it,s true !! |
