Thread: Is there an alloy that looks like copper but isn’t?
19/06/2022 20:39:45

Some of the apprentices the year above me sectioned a Gnome Turboshaft engine. We only found out in later years how much Beryllium Copper was used in its construction.

Thread: Replacing a 24V AC machine lamp
18/06/2022 20:35:10

Just speculating, is there going to be a problem going from 24v AC to DC? I wonder if thats an RMS value.

Will the results make a difference to your work or is it just out of interest?

Thread: Centaur Valve Timing
15/06/2022 12:07:41

He does mention in the notes that if you set the opening points exactly to the drawing you will find the valve close a little early.

Will the Photos and description be published as it may put some members off as they may not want them put into public domain as in the magazines

I would think that is the idea Derek, otherwise why would Neil need a 300-400 word description !!!

Personally i am past caring about how much info about me gets into the public domain. I already have a whole chapter about me in a book about early rock 'n' roll groups, and more to come on that subject.

I also had an article published in the British Horological Journal some while ago, so it is a bit late for me to go all shy.smile p

Your name isn't Derek as well is it by any chance?

Can I say not only what a good detailed review it was but also what an excellent museum it appears to be? If I ever am up that way I will be sure to visit.

Thread: Issue with fire tubes blocking up 3.5" Rob Roy
14/06/2022 10:47:30

My William (almost the same design) repeatedly blocks the lower three tubes. I've taken to carrying an old flue brush with no bristles to knock the grit out. Infuriating. I've slightly opened out the blast pipe to try to reduce it happening, I've not tried it enough to gain meaningful results yet.

I've thought about including a baffle in the front of my ashpan which curves up to slightly shield the lower tubes but haven't done anything about it yet.

If I do poke the fire i try to do it stationary with no blower to prevent anything getting sucked up.

Thread: cutting a square end on a round shaft?

I'm a bit nervous of holding Milling cutters in a 3 Jaw for some of the methods mentioned above, but I'm quite timid with some things.

Second vote for the Stevensons block, it does mean collets too, but those are a very useful addition to the workshop. I got my square and hex stevensons blocks plus collets from Arc too.

Total internal reflection I think its called. Something to do with making sure a limiting angle isn't exceeded.

Sounds like between us we need to form a society of Amputee model engineers! However fingers don't count or we would be flooded with vacancies.

Best wishes, it sounds like you have a good mindset. Adapt and overcome.

Thread: Cutting tools

I hate to repeat what has been said elsewhere, but you really need someone on hand to assist with these things. It's like trying to learn to drive by post otherwise.

Everyone here is very happy to assist in any way they can but its quite difficult to do so via a forum. If you can speak to your local model engineering society; ours certainly has lots of keen members eager to share their experience.

Really nice work, it's given me an opportunity to go back a while and catch up with what you've done to date. Following with interest.

My previous post I think got lost. I was pointing out that wartime equipment was often unpainted or blackened to save paint for the war effort.
