Thread: Merryweather Fire King

Hi Bob,

make ten studs and one blind stud in the cover with a dummy nut. That will be easy to make.

Sometimes shit happens and a good modelengineer make the best of it.

Thread: Transport for Live Steaming

Hi all,

we made another steam rally . This time we had seven engines . Jürgen show the 4 inch Garret unfortunatly the engine was not in steam, because he had some trouble with his engine. In forward direction the excenter was sticky at his trial run a day before. It seems that the tolerances are very narrow.

On one take he is standing behind the engines he had built. We had a lot of fun and look to the the special corona mask muffler at the Diesel engine.

I hope you can enjoy it.

Hello Bob,

your parts are looking good. One hint if you want to etch rhe nameplates there is a free software "inkscape" . With this software i was able to overlay photos of plates and make the vector graphics of the plate.

Then you can delete the photo layer and the vector graphic you can scale as you want. Then you have to make a mirrored print out at nomal paper with a laser printer at high resolution. The next step is spray non coloured piant from the side where no toner is. This give you a cheap template.

Etching last an hour for 0.1 mm deepness. Unfortunatly my inscape data is lost by a drive crash.

Thread: Stroboscopic effect
28/06/2020 17:08:16

Stroboscopic effects are dangerous, if they are synchronised to the spindel speed.

This is why you can have the idea the spindle is not turning. There are guys who grip by hand the "standing" spindle. With dramatic effects.

Normally Leds are used with DC voltage and current. If you buy lamps for the main connection you can have all today . Very poor lamps with single diode transfer from AC to DC this cause a frequency of 25 hz. The better ones have a full rectifier with a DC/DC step down converter with 50 to 100 khz.

And from the point of lifetime there are good ones and very poor ones. I returned to the dealer from one serie of lamps the half of the ordered pieces. I openend a few for my own interest and tinkering and found that the led in serie connected die . The others i used for lamps for my 5 inch locomotive.

Hello Bob,

in 2014 i start to build my Fire King. My only possibility was to search in the Internet after pictures of the Fire King.

I found the same plans as you and after i compare them to the pictures i thought they made their own compromises to build working models. So i decided to make my own way . And it was clear from the beginning it is a working model it should looks similar to the original, but from two meter of distances . That was my compromise. I made only an overwiew drawing and drawings for the wheels. The rest you can see in my documentation in the videos .

After finishing i found an interesting book written by Ron Henderson " British Fire Engines" there are nice pictures and descriptions. And it was good to read with my limited English.

By chance i had contact with him and he had a Fire KIng in display quality and his reply was it was good to build a working model. I think both is good , but i want fun by a real working model.

Shortly before I am ready i had contact to the company Merrywheather and they send me some asked information about the front seat box. It contains hoses and fireman tools.

I had several moments where i have to learn and shift my abilities to a new level.

I wish you can do the same.

Werner

Ps. If you can access the issue 3334 from Modelengineer there is a discription of Cherry Hind´s Fire King

many useful information i had after the completion of the build. Thanks to Vic

Thread: from a 3.5 inch Gezina to 5 inch tramway Plettenberg locomotive
24/06/2020 09:02:20

Hi folks,

I had some time to test my Pettenberg Tramway Locomotive under steam after disassembling and painting over the winter time.

I did some optimization of my garden railway and so it was good time to test the locomotive. I had some trouble with the safety valves , because of to early openning. After setiing correct the fun of driving starts. The engine runs very well under steam . Injector and the steampump worked perfect . The crossheadpump and the oilpump were in a good order too.

It is a good feeling when a project is ready .

There is an impression of my test ride .

Please enjoy it

Thread: Why are injector pipe connections made with flat mating surfaces?
11/06/2020 18:04:20

My personal opinion is , that a cone disturbs the flow of steam and water.

You have to make sure that there is no edge and so the streaming water or steam is not changing in its flow from laminar to turbulent.

I have built my own injectors, a design similar to purchased one. The thread was 5/16 32 tpi and I made for test purpose an adaptor to M7 *0,75 mm for older injectors I have. With these adaptors these injectors are not working. Because the thread is not going to the flat of the nozzle and there is from the bore hole a small conical area where the flow is disturbed.

This is my explanation. Correct me if i am wrong.

Hi folks ,

with the lack of steam rallies the street steamers , at the DBC Rhein-Main club track , decide to make their own

rally. So we have a nice day out and made a Steam Rally for four.

This time we had a helping hand for the camera and so I had the luck to be on the video, too.

We had all a lot of fun . The lunch brake was made like the engine driver have done it with sausages heated in foil made of aluminium in the smoke box.

After cleaning and serviceing the water pump of the right side had a complete worn in stuff box material.

I had to repack it, that was the only service and cleaning I had to do.

I made a picture of the smoke box area. There was very less material after this long run. It was like grey and black sand.

The widen up of the nozzle as it was  identifyed in my measurements last year, was the right decision!

the grate

img_20200602_165917040.jpg

The grate had some clinker as rocks and some other loose material.

My questions is , if I was able to fire more constant , was it possible to avoid this?

Or is it normal after such a run of that lenght of driving ?

Thanks to all who are interestet in my work.

Hello Vic Francis

to clarify i was only the guy with the camera . Jürgen with the brown shirt is the owner and builder of the Garret.

I saw it live , i saw it on the video several times , during editing and the whole video, but it is always amazing each time.

Hello ,

I had the honour to record a video of the transport for live steaming. Our street steamer colleage Jürgen had build a 4 inch Garret Traction Engine.

He is an experienced builder and this is his third traction engine he worked on. He had build a 2 inch and a 3 inch Fowler. At about three years ago he came up with the news that he build a 4 inch Garret.

As I was in his basement I thought this can not go out the door, but Jürgen made before all measurements to see the clearances. There were sometimes a bit small . He ordered an Autocrane to pull it out of the basement.

The crane had been adjusted a second time to have more clearance on the roof of the house.

It was a very interesting action. Now Jürgen have to make a driving seat and test the waterpump and make his first steam test. Hopefully we can see it this year in action.

please enjoy the video

Thread: Merryweather Steam Fire King self propelled
03/06/2020 13:23:17

Hi folks,

i have an update .

I had a dream to make in our area a longer trip to our next town on field and bicycle roads . On Pentecoste Monday there was good wheather and the forecast for the end of the week getting worst.

So I decided that my dream have to come true. To have a clear unterstanding of the road conditions I drove the ways at first by bicycle. For a backup I drove my car to the next town and with bike back.

Then the steam rally for one had a go. It was the longest trip I ever made with the fire king. I had on a second car coal and water and equipment to start the fire again with me. I gave it a start and drove on field and bicycle roads to the next town about 4.8 Km . There were some steep parts over some dams of the river rhine. After the first one I remember that i have first and second gear. To get water in the boiler was no problem ,but under full speed driving i was so enthusiastic that I forgot sometimes to add coal to the fire. So I had some passages to drive whith low pressure of 3 bar. The scenerie was nice and the fire king run to Ginsheim like a swiss watch.

My dream was to have an ice was canceled as I see the long waiting line. By chance I met some friends from our club and had some small talk. Then I drove at bicycle roads back to home. Under driving i saw that some water came out of the stuffing nut of the water pump. I had twice times to tighten it under my way. All systems were in good condition. The last 300 m to home I had problems with the fire I was only able to hold 3 bar. The driver was hungry and thursty at home. It was a great tour and I drove in total 11 Km. The trip lasted 4 hour. My knowledge before was 2.3 and 3.5 km at our club area what a difference

On the whole trip I need 4,3 Kg of coal and 50 L of water i had with the pause with small talk an average speed of 2,75 Km/h top speed was 6.3- 6.5 km/h. I made a video of this trip.

I have now the joy to clean all parts. I changed over the winter the blastnozzle to get less back pressure and less fire draught. The result was very good only particles like sand are in the smoke box. At the grate I had some clinker, I think they came from not continous coal adding.

I hope you can enjoy the video as I .

In this difficult times we had a big delay to our first steam up.

After they softened the restrictions in Germany for meetings with the allowance of two different persons of different households, my friend and I decided to make a steam rally for two.

We had a lot of fun . We made both some optimisations. I made a new widended up blast nozzle. The engine runs now more freely at higher speeds and the fire and pressure behaviour is good.

I hope you can enjoy the video.

best regards

Thread: Central heating woes.
20/04/2020 07:51:45

Hello Robin,

after the water pressure goes down the radiator has now air in it. Therefore no heating is possible.

You have to let the air out of the radiator until water comes again. And then you have to look to the system pressure and add water to the central unit again.

I have sometimes the same problem in my kitchen.

Hello all,

on monday there was a very cold and sunny wheather . So I decided to make a photo rollout.

I think this was a nice build project. It made me a lot of fun. It was a good idea to awake the 3 1/2 inch parts to a future 5 inch gauge life.

with best regards

Hello Dave,

nice to see your interest in my work. After painting and reassembling all, I made test runs with air pressure. In the reassembling i made all bolts in the motion setup new to reduce lash. The position of the cylinders at the frame where not absolutly at the same place as before. So I had to readjust the walscherts motion link.

I made this by looking to the steam ports and I do not know why on the right side the behaviour was as before painting very good. Perhaps it was by chance and the fit of the attachment to the frame is better.

On the left side there where problems the Loco runs ,but not as good as before. So I decided to measure again.

Another reason was, I made optimizations of my software and with each step it is more usefull now. And in 2020 I will measure a big K1 of a club colleage. The Plettenberg is my test loco to improve all.

Here is my presentation and findings.

All measuremments have been performed wit a low air pressure of 1bar ,because my compressor is not strong.

The spring can come, I made my homework,it will be an interesting year 2020.

with christmas greetings

Hello all,

here is the next update.

The chassis is completed again for testing with air pressure.

20191107_133656.jpg

What colour made a difference - In the front on the left the steam pump and right the hand pump. Down the footplate the oil pump.

And now with the housing . It was an intensiv work to paint all parts and line the edges with black colour.

20191107_141835.jpg

The window is moveable so it is possible to fill the oiler with a doctor syringe.

20191107_141922.jpg

It looks nearly like the original,

This is the driver view with some compromise for a good use for all handles.

20191107_150141.jpg

Original and copy.

20191119_133114.jpg

Some trim parts are still missing ,like the brake hose and the coupling hooks.

This is the night view with all lamps on.

20191121_100906.jpg

The lamps are made with LED pulled out of defectiv 230 V LED lamps. They run with 5 miili Amps of current.

20191121_100932.jpg

The driver side with illumination of the pressure gauge and the water glas.

The front , the rear and the inside lamps are separate to switch on and off. A 9 Volt battery gets the power for about 12 hours continously. All is installed in the coal box in the left side.
