Thread: What Did You Do Today (2017)

Started to load up our collection of Slide rules, Rotary calculators & vintage mechanical calculators for the Belvoir Castle steam fair this weekend. As far as we know we are the only ones that show them as an awning display. Fri/Sat/Sun. NG321PE if anyone is interested. If you want a cuppa and a chat just mention the forum.

Hi Jimmy. Usually the user guides that come with heavy machinery have lifting instructs in them. If not contact Warco direct they will be happy to tell where to lift it. Not too sure on removing the head but usually running it right down to the bottom of the ways should get it below the top of the column and give minimum height. Then its probably easier to remove the motor if it is above the column top. The thing to remember is if you take the head off do you have the height to put it back on when its on the bench or its stand.

Thread: power for a wiper motor
22/06/2017 21:25:24

Agreed, use the PC power supply 12v/5v/3.3v outputs. Dead easy to mod. You don't even have to open the case. I run all my power drives and my dro's from one. Have added a USB port to mine so I can power the tablet for the TouchDRO readout.

Today I cleaned and polished the caravan (Bailey 620/6 twin axle) and the car ()Nissan Patrol) it gets harder as I get older. Fixed a problem where the rear window wiper on the car came on as soon as I plugged in the "S" socket. That was a bad earth on the relay box jammed down inside the rear wheel arch. Had to remove the side trim and the 12v - 230vac inverter above it to do that little job. (yes I have an inverter in my car ) Off to a BBQ weekend near March with my friends from the SsangYong car club tomorrow. Then middle of next week we are off on holiday for 2 weeks around the Cotswolds. I need the break as I have removed the grass, prepared the ground and laid 28 square metres Indian stone slabs in the garden and 3 square metres of Victorian tiles in the porch in the last 2 weeks. Knacked to put it politely. But got to keep SHMBO happy Like many of you I do not know how I found the time to go to work before I retired.

Thread: Help with burner for Stuart boiler
22/06/2017 19:16:37

Hi John. I have a Burnac Vulcan boiler. The burner tank is stuffed tight with cotton rag strips. It looks like bedsheet material. The material is pulled up through the tubes and protrudes very slightly. It was like this when I bought it 10 years ago and works well. I have never renewed the "stuffing" and have used it for many hours. I do have to use what seems like a lot of meths to fill the tank and soak all the material. Might be worth a try given the problems you are having.

bricky. My smaller mill is a Chester Conquest (Sieg clone) and that has a manufacturer fitted depth stop that slides up and down the vertical dovetail. I set it for accurate hole depths using a stack of gauge blocks and then lock it off.I find it very handy even though I have fitted DRO to the mill.

John Stevenson :- If you look closely the bonnet is folded over to the near side. It has been lifted to show the engine off.

I use straight C02 and get my bottle filled at a local fire extinguisher supplier. They can test as well if needed.

I also use **LINK** for my rent free oxy/acet'/argon supplies.

I would check if I were you. When I was working most metals were marked as per the grade. ie EN8 is usually mid green.

Hi all thanks for the welcome.

Howard, Can you give me a few more details on the "small display" at the farm open day please. Also what time does it start? I think the wife is off to the NEC Saturday so I might be able to get over. I am in Corby so not far away.

Made a bush on the lathe to fit a 4 sheave pulley to my MD20 mill in order to increase the speed range.

Started to sort out my display of Vintage Mechanical Calculators for the next show.

Hi all. New member here. I have subscribed to the MEW for a couple of years but never bothered to register here. I have a Boxford AUD, it was a bog std CUD but I have fully restored and updated it with Gearbox, VFD and DRO, an Ajax MD20 mill/drill and a Chester Conquest mill. I have updated both mills with DRO's and power feeds to 2 axis'. I have started on a couple of model steam projects but am not very far along yet but hope for more progress now I am retired.
