The local Mens Shed is a worthy cause to donate any excess duplicate or unwanted tools etc when you are done with them. Many of us will be in a situation where we can no longer operate machinery in a safe or useful manner and the Sheds will give us somewhere to go and chat with similar people and depart any knowledge we have gained to aspiring mechanics/machinists etc. regards |
Thread: Genuine or not? |
13/06/2021 11:41:52 |
Having collected old oil lamps for the last 30 odd years and having around 120 on display in my house I have not seen this model in an unrestored or original state. I have seen similar ones in home decor type retrovintage shops. They show no signs of ever having a wick winder or snuffing device fitted. So IMHO these are repro' and made for the exact purpose they are being used for. regards |
Thread: Slipping ER25 collet and best practice |

There are some excellent video's on Youtube on the do's & dont's of ER series colletts. Just search for them. Much easier to see than read directions. regards |

Do you have to have special LED dimmer switches for dimmable LED bulbs ? I ask this as I changed the halogen bulbs for LEDs which sort of work OK, but some of the LEDs on the same circuit can dimly glow when all is turned off. Bob Yes you do. I have a large central chandelier type light fitting and have replaced the Halogen lamps with LED's. The dimmer I got from an electrical wholesaler cost £70 so they are not cheap. regards |
Thread: Is Liquid PTFE Any Good For Airlines? |
07/06/2021 22:27:38 |
PTFE liquid is is excellent for air lines etc. I have watched many YT video's of people applying tape in the most awkward and heavy handed ways you can imagine. Most have no idea how easy tape is to apply if done properly. Most apply way too much or apply it the wrong way round. I have many a good laugh watching people trying to hold the reel with 2 hands and then roll it on the wrong way. Liquid is easy and only a very little is needed on small fittings up to 1" bsp. It will take up any gaps in the threads. Most industrial fittings are of a pretty good standard these days so the threads fit nicely. Easy to remove any excess with a rag and clean old threads with a wire brush. regards |

Thread: How can I repair this HFV (hose failure valve)? |
04/06/2021 12:05:28 |
Having worked in the hydraulics industry for many years I know that HFV's in that context are classed as unrepairable. I would imagine the LP gas regulations contain similar rules. I personally would not want to rely on a repaired HFV. The cost of a new one will be much less than injury or death associated with a hose failure. regards |
Thread: The worst 'upcycling' tragedy ever? |
24/05/2021 09:48:35 |
As we go around searching antique & bricabrac shops for mechanical calculators & slide rules we see many of these abominations on oilcans/drill stands/ typewriters etc etc. I agree that many have looked as if they beeen cobbled together by an "artist". Some had no grommets in drilled holes or no protection around moving joints or any obvious earthing points. I have asked several sellers if they have a PAT or some kind of electrical test certificate and have been met by a blank stare. regards |
Thread: New use for a slide rule |
23/05/2021 19:29:55 |
As most will know I have a very large collection of slide rules of all types. Standard, rotary, cylindrical etc. Probably more than 300 to date. They range in size from 3" (inches) up to 6'(feet). They are complimented by my collection of Mechanical Calculators which exceeds 100 now. These are not hidden away in drawers but most are on display in the house. Always interested in any people want to get rid of. regards |

May be handy if you are using it for mitre cuts Myself I just lower the blade until it is just above the workpiece and slide that along until my mark is under the blade Just it has been done since a powered sawing machine was invented. Never needed more than the 2 hands I was given. regards |
Thread: Help needed on Boring Bar insert. |
19/05/2021 16:26:39 |
Highly unlikely to be for internal threading. None of my many threading inserts have that shape. That shape series I believe comes down to WNMA, WNMG, WPGX, WPMT. If you measure the length of the flat edge that should give you the cutting edge length. 03, 04, 06, 08
