Thread: Milling in a pillar drill |

First: Thank you to whomever rotated my pictures, I did look at the FAQ and like many others found I could not get them right😔 RichardN: a flycutter was the solution I decided upon too and I like the idea though I think holding the random block of steel in a 4 jaw chuck will be easier for me as at this time I don't yet have a face plate for the ML4. Pete: Yes, my question well and truly answered😀 Thank you also for drawing all the previous comments together and rounding it out into a précis of why it probably isn't worth trying milling operations in a pillar drill. Thanks everyone 😀👍 |

Milling in the pillar drill is out so I have been looking at how I can use the ML4. I realised that I own a chinese machine vice that swings up 90 degrees. If I can mount that on the cross slide I am there, https://www.dropbox.com/s/bunp6pyodxpx63l/File%2003-07-2017%2C%2018%2014%2050.jpeg?dl=0 It is a big heavy thing and the vice jaws are too low and it isnt a good looking fit on the cross slide. having looked at it and scratched my head a bit I realised I could take the vice part of its heavy mounting and think about an alternative mount maybe using a piece of plate fettled to fit. To do that the end of the vice that will become the 'bottom' would need to be flat. laying onto the crosslide the way forward seems obvious, some sort of cutter in the chuck and face off the end of the vice. https://www.dropbox.com/s/vc51c6l7jio5su0/File%2003-07-2017%2C%2018%2013%2040.jpeg?dl=0 So what I would like please is advice on what sort of a cutter would be best. If I cannot remove all the material in one pass I will need to change the packing under the vice to take multiple passes unless I can use an end mill about 3 cm in diameter or use a fly cutter. The vice material is cast iron of unknown quality. Ho Hum, looks like milling in the pillar drill is becoming less likely. I wasn't planning on purchasing a milling machine just yet so might have to bring forward the resurection of the ML4 and do the necessary to set that up for milling................it wouldn't hurt to just 'look' at milling machines though would it

geoff walker 1: Thanks, and X-Y table was tghe next thing if milling was going to happen on the pillar drill. Foe the time being I was going to raise and lower the drill table, it moves on a rack and pinion, as a crude Z feed and didn't plan on needing to cut in the Z plane. RichardN: Thanks for the explanation of the drawbar, i Understand the setup now. Unlikely as existence of the hollow spindle on the pillar drill might be I will check it out, though I don't think I would go to the effort of converting it if it is not hollow. Looks like i might have to wait until I get the Myford ML4 is set up ! |

Thanks RichardN, Yes the taper on my Jacobs chuck does indeed have a tang that gets thumped by the wedge How does the 'drawbar' work on threaded hole in the milling chuck then please ? Seems as if milling in the drill may not be a good move but I will take a look at the bearings or bushes supporting the quill. |

Thanks Neil. The lathe is not yet put back together I wish it were. Meanwhile I wanted to try and make a start on making the grinding rest in Harold Halls book 'Tool and Cutter Sharpening. the build requires a bit of 'light' milling work which I was hoping my pillar drill could cope with ! |
02/07/2017 20:13:18 |
Hi Tony. i'm not entirely sure what a draw bar is or how it is used but I don't believe the drill has a taper that uses a drawbar as I have to remove the Jacobs chuck by tapping a tapered flat bar into a slot in the quill. |

I have a reasonable quality pillar drill. The quill has a morse taper that takes the standard Jacobs chuck. Could I fit some sort of milling chuck? I only envisage doing some light end milling mostly because I suspect the drill would struggle to do anything else. So I am looking for advice as to the advisability of going down this path and if its feasible what sort of chuck etc. would be most suitable please. Many thanks |

I broke a jigsaw blade yesterday and realised it snapped rather than bent. Would jigsaw blades make good parting off tools in a similar manner to hacksaw blades? |

Last night I was sorting through a load of old taps and dies I inherited along with the ML4 and wondered if taps that had seen better days could be ground to serve as lathe tools for occasions such as Ian Skeldon 2 is enquiring? I know the taps are 'hard' as they are HSS but seem to remember that they are also 'brittle' and wonder if this precludes their use as lathe cutting tools? The smallest taps and dies I found in the stuff I sorted out are 12 BA ! 😳 Nige |

Howard, Thanks for the extra detail. My daughter, husband and grandchildren live in Peterborough and we are part way through buying a house in the Gunthorpe/Warrington sort of area hence my interest in the PMES 😊 If I can make it I will be sure to find you for a chat. Again thanks. Nigel |
