If it's convenient; could you please let us know what bearings, and what adjustment arrangement, are used in the conversion. Thanks MichaelG.
Let us guess. The present headstock bearing hole is approximately 52mm and have been bored out to either 55 or 62mm allowing spindle of either 35mm or 40mm. Let us asume 40 mm spindle with hole 32mm and bearing outside 62mm. I have thougth of something like it for upping chineese lathes 180 and 210 sizes The Roy Milner Gentleman has surely acces to a line borer. Line up relative to existing 52 mm holes.Bore through 62 mm.Make two spring ring ditches say one mm wide and 2 mm deep and we are in pure Boxford country. Cheap and dirty and very good

Is there a linkto this gentleman offers? If rolling element spindle bearings gives chatter Schaublin ,Harrison etc was wrong. Was author of Amateurs Lathe Book an amateur? If the new spindle has 32mm hole, outside diameter cannot be less than 40mm. Torsional and bending stiffnes is a power three thing. If the original spindle has 16mm hole and 30mm outside we can compare: 4**3-3**3=64-27=36 and for theoriginal Myford 27-4.1=23 or the new is 36/23=56% stiffer. Getting rid of Morse2 and having ER 40 sounds a very great advantage to me and I am going to try it on a pair of blue lathes from China. A WM180 travelled all the way to Poland and then to 50 meter from my door. The danish/arian looking driver dropped it by accident and left very fast. I have to wait with an absolutely scrap lathe in my small appartment to sometime next week . Time for reflection evidently. The bigger inside,same outside diameter frontbearing make a more usefull spindle possible. All the mini lathes has the same 62 mm bearing hole as far as I can deduct.It can also benefit 918,RedBull ,Siegs etc and the manufacture of new style spindle is not more costly than the present versions.It can still fix the standard3 and 4 jaws plus faceplates and I like the flange mounting after widening the gap 5 mm. We are close to the final part off solution. A firm is selling a pirate blade+ 10 iscar 3 mm inserts and the block. If manufacturer of blade can be persuaded to make one end suitable for TAG N1.4J inserts we are in safe heaven.

I did the same, felt ashamed ,changed trousers,and got rather angry. It is not OK to sell narco to schoolchildren either. I develloped a rather expensive system and never looked back. It has parted 125 mm seawater resistant alu once and 100 mm scraptanium steel many times on my former Boxford . It is based on Iscar TAG N4J and N2J inserts in a TGFH 32-4 blade spark modified at one end.
Link **LINK** I want to repeat the succes with a TGFH 26-3 blade with TAG N3J and N1.4J inserts but cannot as seat geometries ARE not equal. It can be of great benefit to mankind and trade as well if we unite and demand that Iscar or Glance or whatever make such a system. I do not think it possible to do it myself.Grinding tolerances must be in my(0,001mm) range.

Thank You for a very good advice: Old men do not have the power for ER50. My experience is ER25 and pleasant, but ER50 is four to eigth times more demanding. Had not thougth of that.Will try ER40 then The eigth radial holes on thickest part of my phantasy spindles are for locking during chuck and collet nut handling. The Hardinge UM looks very nice.Do You have a parts list picture?

My toolmaker friend has fallen in love with my former WM210 lathe and is blueprinting it. I have bought a WM180 and will get it on friday. He thinks he can rebore the front bearing hole in headstocks from present 62 mm to 72 mm diameter. In that case a 50*72*15 mm tapered bearing will enable an ER50 spindle. I want to keep the rear inner diameter of 20.5 mm to avoid the temptation to do water pipe threading and worse. Lathes are only 60 kg. Picture shows present ,ER40 and ER50 versions Waste of money maybe but more fun than TV. |

I have made a new design for WM180 and 210 lathes: Upper is standard MT3 and lower is for new ER40 collets. The front bearing goes from type 30206 (30*62*17.25) to 32908 (40*62*15mm). Beaty is that no housing modification is needed |

I have made 50 different tangential tool holders from very mild and cheap scrap steel. It is the modulus of elasticity that is important and that is more or less the same for all kind of steel.

The stiffness shal be directly under the slideways of machine to be of any use
A canadian (Lazylathe)did a concrete slab under a Myford and tested it before and after. https://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/threads/concrete-counter-tops.15300/ Great improvement and he thanked me for advice.Guy had class I then adviced him to sell the Myford and buy two Boxfords and I never heard a word of praise. I bought a Boxford many years ago and put it directly on a piece of granite. It works wonders. Oh, I have left the maximum frequency at 50 Hz. I might consider 60 Hz later; the headstock gives speeds for both frequencies, so I should not be overspeeding anything. Still need to check the chucks, first, though. Strange. I never ever had parting off problems on my two 6" Roundhead Students. My parting off chatter problems only first appeared post Colchester ownership with my current Boxford VSL. Both lathes ran/run a Dickson style tool post. I always wind the top slide back on the Boxford so the tool holder sits more central over the cross slide which seems to help. This was never neccessary on the Colchester. Would be interesting to see a photo of your parting off tool holder. Edited By thaiguzzi on 22/07/2018 06:16:19

Thank You for answering. Looks to complicated to me. When I propose how British Steam locomotives should have been made 50 years ago I am not aprecciated on certain fora. Proposing how SIEG shall make next 100 kg lathe for me to buy it, hopefully do not offend readers here. Spindle nose to take ER 50 collets directly and spindle hole 36mm.Face- and back plates can be screwed on the ER thread M64 1.5. Electric DC motor directly on spindle like model aircraft engines.Aussenlaufer in german. Rotary encoder on spindle Electric stepper motors with manual overide on leadscrew and crosslide. Gifted chineese make and sell radio-controlled helikopters for 20£ so this future scheme is not at all impossible. And cheaper than 900£ I payed for a Boxford AUD 10 .
